Intercity 2 (Deutsche Bahn)
Deutsche Bahn markets its double-decker Intercity trains, which have been in operation since December 2015, under the name Intercity 2 , or IC2 for short .
Train material and equipment
The increasing obsolescence of the existing wagon fleet as well as an option for double-decker wagons originally intended for DB Regio prompted the DB to modernize or supplement its IC-fleet with double-decker wagons of the type Bombardier Twindexx . In 2019, Deutsche Bahn also acquired “ KISS ” multiple units from the manufacturer Stadler from Westbahn , which have also been in operation as IC2s since March 8, 2020.
Locomotive-hauled IC2
The first IC2 were locomotive hauled trains with five double-decker cars and a top speed of 160 km / h.
The first cars were presented to the public at InnoTrans 2014. The first prototypes were presented in Berlin and Leipzig in autumn 2014. There was a lot of criticism, such as B. too little space for luggage, less seating comfort or the lack of a bistro or dining car.
Common features
The locomotive-hauled IC2 is similar to the double-decker trains used on the regional express .
The 134.50 meter long trains without a locomotive are made up of five cars: In addition to a control car ("Servicewagen", type DBpbzfa 668.2, serial number 1) there are three middle cars, second class (DBpza 682.2, serial numbers 2-4) and one middle car, first class ( DApza 687.2, serial number 5). Each train also consists of an electric locomotive designed for 160 km / h. Deutsche Bahn initially sought approval for a maximum speed of 185 km / h at a later date. Since the IC 2 is hardly used on routes with a top speed of more than 160 km / h, according to the information provided by Deutsche Bahn, and the potential time advantage would be marginal, this will not be pursued further. In addition, higher speeds are expensive to obtain because of ETCS and problematic for double-decker trains, for example because of energy consumption and sensitivity to crosswinds. The low-cost IC 2 makes it possible to maintain and expand long-distance traffic on rural routes at a moderate speed.
The trains have 468 seats, 70 of them in the first class and six folding seats. A total of nine parking spaces are available for bicycles , six of which are in the control car and one in each of the other three second-class cars. The trains have, among other things, head cushions, footrests, LTE- enabled cellular amplifiers and sockets. The integration of a WLAN system into the IC2 fleet began in 2019.
According to DB information on the introduction, the retrofitting of an on-board restaurant was "probably" planned, but has not yet taken place. Instead, there will be catering in both classes on individual sections of the route. Under the name IC Café-Team , employees of the Lufthansa subsidiary LSG Sky Chefs offer travelers cold and hot drinks, snacks and baked goods.
The entrances and exits have a clear width of 1300 mm in the control car and 1800 mm in the middle car. Access to the control car is barrier-free on 55-centimeter platforms via a gap bridging, a ramp is provided for heights between 38 and 76 centimeters. A barrier-free and level entry into the control car is only possible here for the lower floor. There is also a barrier-free toilet there. The upper floor is not barrier-free and can only be reached by two flights of stairs, there are seats and a children's play area. With all intermediate cars (and thus also the only first-class car), stairs must always be overcome when boarding; from the entrance area, all seats on the lower and upper floors can only be reached via additional stairs. The entrances to the car are just under 1.90 meters wide; a handrail divides the entrances into two parts in the middle car. In the second class, knee clearance of 820 millimeters is provided, in the first class of 910 millimeters.
The construction as a double-decker car leads to some restrictions compared to the single-decker vehicles used previously. Because of the low interior height and the clearance-related kink in the car body, only small luggage racks are possible above the seats, on which larger items of luggage cannot be stowed. For reasons of space, the air ducts of the air conditioning system also have to be routed along the walls in the foot area of the interior, which means that the foot space at the window seats is massively restricted.
differences
First series: The first series was equipped with class 146.5 locomotives. The first series is mainly used on the routes in Lower Saxony as well as to Leipzig and Dresden.
Second series: The second series is tractioned with class 147.5 locomotives . delivered. The main area of application for the first batch of 17 trains in the second series is in Baden-Württemberg. It will be equipped with ETCS for traffic with Switzerland, although its approval by Switzerland was delayed and had not yet taken place at the end of 2019.
Acceptance and criticism
It quickly turned out to be problematic that the trains, although technically a locomotive, four medium-sized cars and one control car, are to be treated operationally like a multiple unit. As soon as a car has a defect, it cannot be separated and suspended like a train of cars; instead, the entire train has to be suspended.
The press coverage shows that IC2 of this type are viewed very differently. On the one hand, the interior and the children's compartment are praised, but on the other hand, there is also a lack of space for luggage and a lack of WiFi. Other newspapers also cite “a bad regional express” and argue that the original technical difficulties (see section Start of Operation ) and the resulting fluctuations in the wagons make passengers sick. The forced transfer in Singen was also clearly criticized. In June 2019, DB had to admit that the number of delays and cancellations on the connection from Stuttgart to Nuremberg was even higher than the national average, especially after the switch to IC-2 trains. In January 2020 it became known that the railway was refusing to accept 25 new trains because the series had proven to be very prone to failure in operation since 2015 and often provoked delays.
operating cost
According to the Deutsche Bahn, the cost of the vehicles per kilometer is 18 euros per kilometer; old passenger trains would cost 25 euros per kilometer.
Multiple units
In 2019, DB acquired Stadler KISS double-decker multiple units from Westbahn and had them upgraded for intercity service. The railcars consist of four cars and can reach a top speed of 200 km / h. The regular scheduled service began on March 8, 2020 on the Rostock - Berlin - Dresden route.
business
prehistory
In 2011, the plan was to use the first double-deck cars on IC lines in 2013. This date has been postponed several times. Bombardier justified the delivery delays with the approval by the Federal Railway Authority, in the context of which additional evidence was repeatedly requested. In July 2015, the double-deck cars were presented in various stations, including a. in Düsseldorf and Leipzig.
Approval by the Federal Railway Authority took place in September 2015, after which the vehicles were handed over to Deutsche Bahn and staff training began.
With the timetable change in December 2015, operations began with the first use of the double-decker Intercity trains - now called Intercity 2 ( IC2 ) - on IC line 56 (Cottbus / Leipzig - Hanover - Norddeich). To this day, only trains from the first series are used here.
Since March 20, 2016, the Intercity-2 trains have also been used on IC line 35 (Koblenz - Cologne - Münster - Norddeich). However, the operation was interrupted for one to two years for the 2017 annual timetable because the vehicles were required from December 2016 for IC line 55, where a pair of trains with double-decker IC had been running since September 4, 2016. In order to be able to meet the travel time between the Dortmund and Hanover nodes, the Intercity 2 trains do not stop in Bad Oeynhausen . According to the timetable, 18 sets are required. The first five sets went into operation in 2016; at the end of 2016, 25 were already in use. The maintenance of the trains first ordered by DB Fernverkehr takes place in the ICE plant in Leipzig , where new workshop capacities have been created. Initially, the idea was to operate the Intercity double-decker wagons through the DB Regio subsidiary DB Verkehr GmbH and thus to utilize the existing maintenance capacities for double-decker wagons at DB Regio.
After test drives in May 2017, the trains have also been running on the Stuttgart – Singen (Gäubahn) route since December 10, 2017, with trains from the second series being used here. Since the equipment with ETCS is a prerequisite for use in the Swiss network and the Bombardier trains have not (yet) been granted Swiss approval, their traffic to Zurich was postponed until the end of 2020.
Problems
An accumulation of technical malfunctions, including on the doors and the vehicle controls, as well as uncomfortable rolling of the vehicles on certain sections of the route made repairs to the trains of the first series necessary. For this reason, the deployment of the vehicles originally planned for February 2016 on IC line 55 (Dresden - Hanover - Cologne) had to be postponed to mid-December 2016. The vibration dampers have been readjusted to reduce rolling movements and all wheel sets have been given a more conical profile to reduce lateral movements. Since February 19, 2016, a speed limit for IC 2 has been reduced to 120 km / h in the section between Halle (Saale) Hauptbahnhof and Leipzig-Mockau, which is to be compensated by omitting the stop at Leipzig / Halle Airport station . According to the Federal Railway Authority , all rolling movements during the approval process were within the permissible values.
The trains in the second series, on the other hand, are repeatedly affected by lighting failures. Due to problems with equipping the trains, the additional Intercity-2 trains will probably only run to Singen until December 2020, where they will have to switch to an IC with approval for the Swiss rail network.
procurement
The value of the contract awarded to Bombardier Transportation in 2011 was put at 362 million euros. The cost of a train with five cars and a class 146.5 locomotive is 17 million euros. In spring 2016, 22 of the 26 sets were accepted. The delivery of the first 27 sets should be completed by summer 2016. 25 trains were delivered in January 2017. The delivery of the first batch of 27 trains was originally planned by the end of 2013.
In September 2013, Deutsche Bahn ordered a further 17 double-deck ICs with an order value of 293 million euros. On the Gäubahn , these IC2 trains will be temporarily hauled by class 146 locomotives; from 2019, Swiss-capable class 147 machines should be used. Eleven trains of the second series are to follow by December 2017, then the remaining six trains of the second series by March 2018.
At the end of March 2017, another request was made by Deutsche Bahn via 25 additional Intercity double-decker trains. In January 2020, DB Fernverkehr refused to accept the 25 trains of the second part of the 2nd series due to software problems.
