The village church in Schlewecke , a district of the city of Bad Harzburg , is a baroque half-timbered church .

history

Schlewecke is probably the oldest place in the former Harzburg office. It was first mentioned in 1181 in a document book (Goslar I p. 328). The church in Schlewecke, mentioned in 1496 in the Ilsenburg monastery register , the predecessor of today's church, stood in the area of the Kirchenbrink 2 and 4 plots. It was independent at the time. Until 1498 it was looked after by vicars of the Goslar cathedral chapter . It was then incorporated into the Bündheim St. Andreas Church (Ilsenburg II document book, p. 399) and has lost its independence. The incorporation relationship was dissolved again in the course of the Reformation . In records of visitations in 1542 and 1568 it was listed as a branch church of the Harlingeröder Marienkirche . From 1698 the plan for the construction of a new church matured because the old one was dilapidated. Only six guilders were available as Schlewische church money. In the end, the building was 300 times more expensive, as stated in a report on the church building from 1704. With the permission of Duke Rudolf August , he was entitled to church patronage , and the ducal consistory was allowed to be collected to finance the construction. In 1702 construction could begin. The southern side of the Mühlenbach just before the entrance to the glass corner was chosen as the new location . On June 10, 1708 Church of Harzburger was superintendent and provost of the monastery Frankenberg in Goslar ordained . Then the old church was demolished.

Building description

The half-timbered church is a hall church . An octagonal roof tower , crowned by a bell dome, protrudes from the slate-covered gable roof on the west side . Above the eastern three-eighth apse , the three parts of the tent roof drop from the ridge to the eaves . In 1857 the damaged slate roof was replaced by roof tiles . The interior is lit by 8 large windows. Already in 1684 was for the ancient church of a bell founder from Wolfenbüttel a four quintals heavy bell cast. After it was so damaged that it could no longer be rung, a new bell was purchased from the Schilling bell foundry in 1934 . In 1873 there was a decree that a clock must be attached to public buildings. In the poor farming village of Schlewecke that was the church. The tower clock was operated by the mechanical clockwork from JF Weule , which was still in service until 1967 after a restoration . Today the clock and the striking mechanism work electronically. The clock mechanism stood unused in the church attic for 43 years. Since October 10, 2010 it has been a special display object in the church.

Furnishing

The hand-carved pulpit altar and the baptismal angel come from the workshop of the Goslar carver Jobst Heinrich Lessen . The depiction of the Old Testament priest Aaron is rare. There are 2 epitaphs on the walls that were taken from the old church. The picture of the crucifixion was painted by E. Teich in 1861. The candle- powered chandeliers date from the 19th century.

Next to the pulpit is an hourglass from the 18th century. Your time division is quarter of an hour, half an hour, three quarters of an hour and a full hour. This probably also served to prove that the sermon was adequate .

The artistically high-quality baptism angel was removed by order of General Superintendent Carl Hermann Leopold Stöter in 1846 and banished to the church floor. It wasn't brought down until the end of the last century.

Around 1658 an organ was donated for the old church by a citizen from Oker . The inhabitants of Oker came to the service in Schlewecke because they did not have a church. For the new church in 1708 an organ with 9 registers was built by Johann Adolarius Papenius from Stolberg . In 1933 new organ pipes were installed by the Sander brothers' organ building workshop. When it was no longer playable, a small electronic church organ was purchased. In 1975 an organ from Emil Hammer Orgelbau was acquired. It has 2 manuals with 13 registers. 4 stops were taken from the old organ.

The altar bible, 40 cm tall and 6 kilograms, was loaned to Schlewecke in 1994 . It comes from the possession of a family from Burgdorf . In the meantime it was owned by a citizen from Schlewecke, a very good friend of the Burgdorf family. She gave the Bible to her home church on the 300th anniversary. The Bible has an iron-studded wooden cover on which the number 1726 was incised after it was finally completed. On the first page are the letters M DCC XXV, ie the year 1725, on which it was started. It is illustrated with copperplate engravings and printed with artistic letters. The paper consists of pure cellulose without wood components, which makes it age-resistant.
