The village Doveren located in the city of Hückelhoven in the district Heinsberg , in the far west of North Rhine-Westphalia , on the left Lower Rhine and not far from the border with the Netherlands .

In addition to the actual town center, formerly mostly called "het Dbod" (= the village) by the locals , the two districts of Doverhahn and Doverheide also belong to the very old community, which was dominated by agriculture until long after the Second World War . The place had 3,019 inhabitants on June 30, 2014.

geography

Neighboring towns are Kleingladbach , Houverath , Hetzerath , Hückelhoven , Granterath , Hilfarth , Brachelen and Baal .

history

Doveren is probably well over 2000 years old, because its name is derived from the Celtic-Germanic Dubra (dt. Waters or on the water), which the Romans latinized and made Dubris . In this context, the close relationship by name to the port city of Dover on the English Channel in the county of Kent , England should be seen. Their name changed over the centuries from Dubra to Dubris , Dofras , Doferum , Douer , Dovor and Dower to today's Dover.

Half-timbered houses in Doverhahn

On the Doveren area there are still a total of three brooks, the old river bed of the Rur was only a stone's throw away from Doverheide and in addition there were at least some ponds and wetlands in the past , which, however, have long been due to the lowering of the water table in the nearby lignite mining area the Rheinbraun have dried out. Presumably this original abundance of water led to the first colonization of the area by the Celts or Teutons . Later the Romans came to the area and at least one of their numerous military routes crossed the foothills of what is now Doverheide.

The oldest known document, in which Doveren is already mentioned, concerns the sale of the so-called Kühlerhof in 1148 to the Rolduc Abbey (Kloosterrade).

Doveren belonged to the Wassenberg office in the Duchy of Jülich in the Middle Ages and early modern times and had its own jurisdiction. The court of Doveren also included Baal (though only partially), Doverack, Doverhahn, Doverheide, Hetzerath, the Hohenbusch monastery , Hückelhoven, Granterath and the aforementioned Kühlerhof .

The formerly independent municipality of Doveren became a district of Hückelhoven through the Aachen Act on January 1, 1972 .

Population development

Like Hückelhoven itself, Doveren, only around 1 km away, grew relatively quickly in the 20th century due to the influx of many mine workers who found work at the Sophia-Jacoba colliery . In particular the “Old Settlement” and later the “New Settlement” became the new home for the initially mostly German buddies , who were followed by guest workers from southern Europe and especially Turkey from the 1960s . In the last quarter of the 20th century, more and more new houses were built along the old railway line from Hückelhoven to Baal, exactly in the area where the soccer field of FC Viktoria Doveren was once located. In 2004, the 5.5 hectare “Doverheide” development area in the Doveren district was developed, which created space for around 250 new residents.

coat of arms

The former municipal coat of arms

The coat of arms is divided into gold and blue. Above a black lion with a red tongue and red paws, below in blue a golden dove with a white beak.

The Doveren coat of arms refers to an old aldermen's seal that was awarded to Dingstuhl Doveren in Jülich. It shows the Jülich lion in the upper part , the dove as a talking symbol in the lower part , which represents the place name (dialect Duevere , as dialect “Dueve” for pigeons). The coat of arms was awarded to the community on October 6, 1955 by the Minister of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia, but lost its meaning when it was incorporated into Hückelhoven in 1972.

Attractions

The cath. Parish Church of St. Dionysius in Doveren

The sacristy of Saint Dionysius

The sacristy of the cath. Church of St. Dionysius in Doveren was built, almost in the style of the bridges of Venice , as a kind of arched building between the parish and church across the street that leads to the neighboring town of Houverath.

The forest of blue flowers

The "forest of blue flowers" between Doveren and Baal (2008)

In a small forest east of Doveren, popularly known as the “forest of blue flowers”, you can experience a veritable sea of flowers every spring. From mid-April to mid-May (depending on the weather) the forest floor is covered over a large area like a dense blue-green carpet of rabbit bells ( Hyacinthoides non-scripta ).

Other sights

traffic

Doveren is part of the Aachen Transport Association (AVV). Bus routes 401, 402 (formerly SB4), HÜ1 and 495 run through the village.

In the EXPO year 2000, the coal washing plant of the former Sophia-Jacoba colliery in Ratheim was used for a short time as a commissioning base for ICE multiple units, which led to the curious fact that ICEs also ran through Doveren.

The Aachener Verkehrsverbund originally envisaged a reactivation of the route (Wassenberg) - Ratheim - Baal for passenger traffic in its 2013 target concept . However, these plans are countered by the intention of the city of Hückelhoven to partially build over the route to build a bypass, which would make a later reactivation more expensive.

Rail bus on a special trip at the former Doveren stop

The nearest train station is about 800 m south of Doveren in Baal, on the Aachen – Erkelenz – Mönchengladbach – Düsseldorf railway line . There are (as of 2007) the following rail connections:

The Rur, which flows past the site, was navigable in earlier centuries. It represented an important traffic artery for the region and gave the Heinsberger Lands cohesion. Upstream she could z. T. can only be accessed by towing . The paths along the Rur led to the Jülich and Limburger Land.

Sons and daughters of the place

societies

For more than 50 years in series Sankt Martin Doverens: Matthias Jansen

Doveren is home to a relatively large number of different associations that offer the population a wide range of opportunities to help shape village life. In addition to the largest and best-known representatives of the club culture in the Rhineland, the St. Sebastianus- Schutterij , the volunteer fire department Doveren and Carnival Association K. G. Tip there are a few other clubs in Doveren. The cath. Women's community and the football club F.C. Viktoria Doveren with all its youth, adult and senior teams are the biggest representatives here. Among the smaller clubs of the place include the drummers Corps T. C. Leonardo , the horticultural and settlers association, the table tennis club and the motorsport club.

In addition, there is a Saint Martin's committee that an annual Martinszug organized. Beyond the turn of the millennium , Doveren's long-time arbitrator Matthias Jansen was Germany's “record-breaking Sankt-Martin”, as between 1947 and 1999 (already 92 years old at this point) he had 52 times without interruption as Sankt Martin over the years a total of six different horses accompanied the train. As part of his last assignment , a local time report moderated by Brigitte Büscher with a live connection to the blazing Martin fire in Doveren was also worth it for WDR television .

Traditionally, there are still some pigeon fanciers' associations that have been preserved from Doveren's history, which was shaped by mining. In addition, the scouting community with its tribe of the Cross has re-established itself in Doveren in the recent past .
