Dracula is a British miniseries with Claes Bang in the title role. The television series was produced by Hartswood Films for the television broadcaster BBC One and the streaming service provider Netflix and consists of a season with three episodes. The series is based on the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker , published in 1897 . The miniseries aired on BBC One on the first three days of January 2020.

action

The plot of the first part takes place in the Kingdom of Hungary in 1897 . The lawyer Jonathan Harker visits Count Dracula at his castle in Transylvania on behalf of his law firm to complete his acquisition of land in England and to assist with his move to England. Dracula holds Harker prisoner in his castle for a month, feeding on him and taking over his memories and knowledge. However, Harker escapes and is later brought to a monastery in Budapest, physically severely aged and changed, where he is questioned and examined by the sister of the order Agatha van Helsing. Also present is his fiancée Mina Murray, disguised as a nun, who was contacted by the nuns, but because of the trauma, Jonathan can no longer remember her face. It turns out that Harker is un-dead and sooner or later people will attack too. Dracula attacks the monastery and kills all of the nuns after Harker has asked him in to put an end to his existence. Dracula lets Mina go, while Van Helsing is captured by Dracula but not yet killed.

The second part takes place on the ship Demeter, which sails from Romania to England and carries Dracula and the sister van Helsing whom he has captured. In the course of the voyage, Dracula murders all of the passengers and most of the ship's crew that he has lured here by detours in order to acquire their vocabulary, memories and assets. But then van Helsing manages to free himself and not far from the English coast she sinks the ship together with the captain to prevent Dracula from reaching England. Van Helsing and the captain are also killed and only two sailors who previously escaped in a lifeboat survive.

The third and last part takes place 123 years later in the present. Dracula is discovered on the ocean floor by scientists from the Jonathan Harker Foundation, which was founded by Mina Murray after her return to England in memory of her fiancé, and is awakened from his deep sleep. It will then be held in a laboratory where it will be studied. The private foundation is headed by Zoe Helsing, a descendant of Sister Agatha. When Dracula attacks Zoe, it turns out that she suffers from cancer and that her blood is fatal to Dracula in large quantities as a result. Dracula later succeeds in forcing his release with the help of a lawyer. In freedom, Dracula meets the vain Lucy Westenra, who voluntarily lets him drink her blood and maintains a kind of relationship with him. When her former friend and member of the Jonathan Harker Foundation Jack Seward discovers that Lucy Dracula has fallen for, he seeks out his old mentor Zoe. She has since left the foundation and is waiting for her death in a hospital. When Lucy finally dies, Seward and Zoe visit Dracula, who is not even hiding. After Lucy shows up, horribly burned by an unfinished cremation, Seward obliterates her in an act of grace. Zoe, who in the meantime has figured out why Dracula is afraid of sunlight and the cross, reveals her knowledge to him shortly after daybreak. Seward gets to safety and Dracula is astonished to note that sunlight is not fatal to him and sees the sun for the first time in 500 years. It is his shame that he cannot share the fate of his glorious ancestors and human descendants that alone imposes the rules of vampirism on him. This realization of the real reason for his fear of sunlight and the cross moves him to voluntarily die together with Zoe Helsing by drinking her deadly blood for him.

reception

In English-speaking countries

On the Rotten Tomatoes aggregator side , the trilogy received a tomatometer rating of 72% based on the evaluation of 50 reviews, of which 36 reviews were rated as predominantly positive ( fresh ) and 14 as predominantly negative ( rotten ).

In German-speaking countries

In a review in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Oliver Junge speaks of a great horror opera that also acts like a post-modern commentary. He draws a comparison to the modernized version of Sherlock Holmes Sherlock by the same scriptwriters and says that the "cheekily coiffed" Dracula trilogy may not be quite as inventive, but it could hardly be more scary.

Thomas Klingenmaier discusses the trilogy in the Stuttgarter Zeitung and says that despite a few hang-ups and questionable decisions, it offers good entertainment and new and surprising aspects of the story. She scrubs the tartar of the vampire myth and the figure of Agatha van Helsing is the most interesting adversary that Dracula has ever had.
