Dragutin Šurbek
Dragutin Šurbek (born August 8, 1946 in Zagreb ; † July 15, 2018 there ) was a Yugoslav and Croatian table tennis player and trainer who was one of the best in the world in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and was twice world champion in doubles .
Overview
Dragutin Šurbek became European men's individual champion in Lyon in 1968 . In the years that followed, a large number of international titles and placements in doubles and with the team followed. Šurbek was an offensive player who used the topspin far behind the plate in all game situations, whereby he won some world championships, especially in doubles. He played in Yugoslavia for the clubs TTC Poštar Zagreb and GSTK VJESNIK Zagreb and from 1977 also for a number of years in the German Bundesliga ( TTC Calw , 1980-1982 ATSV Saarbrücken , then with TTC Esslingen in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga). In 1992 he made a comeback when he qualified for participation in the Summer Olympics .
Šurbek was - in a positive sense - obsessed with table tennis. As a teenager, the - official - six hours of training a day were not enough for him. He and a friend got into the gym at night through a window and continued to train. At the beginning of his career he played for the Yugoslav national team. In the last year of his career he played - together with his son - for the Croatian national team.
Private
Šurbek had two sons with his wife Jelena. The younger is also called Dragutin (born November 8, 1977), he has already participated in table tennis world championships for Croatia and in 1998 moved from STK Zagreb to the 2nd Bundesliga to Team Galaxis Lübeck and in 2000 to the 1st Bundesliga to TTC Frickenhausen .
