The church is located on Martin-Luther-Platz, at the end of Marienstraße, at the corner of Moltkestraße. Next to the church there is a memorial stone for the formerly neighboring synagogue on Moltkestrasse, which was burned down in the night of the pogrom in 1938 . The church with the neighboring community center Martin-Luther House forms the center of Protestant life in Eschweiler. Until 1957 the church was called the Luther Church , after which it was renamed the Dreieinigkeitskirche. In 1973 the Dreieinigkeitskirche was added to the list of architectural monuments of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Building history

After the necessary funds were available through collections and donations, the foundation stone for the church was laid in 1890. The church was consecrated on February 4, 1892. The Dreieinigkeitskirche was built by the architect August Albes (* 1842 in Hanover), a student of Conrad Wilhelm Hase , in neo-Gothic and historicist forms according to the Eisenach regulation . In addition to the Trinity Church, Albes also built the Presbyter Church in Cologne-Kalk (remains blown up in 1951) and the Luther Church in Cologne-Nippes (today the Kulturkirche).

Building description

Interior (2017)

The Dreieinigkeitskirche is a hall church with offsides , i.e. H. not fully developed aisles. The west is closed off by a transverse building, in the middle of which the tum rises. In the east, the building ends with a three-part choir and ambulatory on the central apse. A large, ogival window breaks through the triangular gable above the main entrance. On the next floor there is a tall, slim pair of windows. The following zone with the sound windows for the bells changes from a square to an octagonal floor plan. The buttresses, which taper towards the top, are placed diagonally on the corners and also accompany the octagon of the top floor and end in pinnacles . This, the crown in the upper area of the spire, and the four triangular ornamental gables above the acoustic windows fell victim to the taste of the times during the renovation in 1968. The interior of the church was also changed considerably in the course of the renovation in 1968 and painted white; benches and the ornamental flooring were removed. In another renovation in 1990, the pillars, capitals, cross ribs and arches were restored to their original brick view. The same applies to the subtle ornamental painting.

Furnishing

window

Originally the church had neo-Gothic stained glass. After the war damage, the church was emergency glazed with cathedral glass. In 1948 the glass painting company Oidtmann from Linnich supplied the middle choir window. Whitsun 1956, the two flanking choir windows were used by Derix stained glass , Kaiserswerth . All three ornamental windows were designed by the artist Maria Katzgrau and contain scenes from the Old and New Testament. In 1961 the remaining windows were installed.

Bells

"Be joyful in hope - be patient in tribulation - hold on to prayer", read the inscriptions of the first three bells (according to ( Rom. 12.12  EU )). They were given to be melted down during the First World War.

On July 6, 1925 were in the bell foundry Pfeifer , Kaiserslautern given for 11,094 Goldmark four new bronze bells commissioned and inaugurated on November 1, 1925th The three largest bells have the same names as their predecessors.

  • 1st bell "Be happy in hope", tone e ', 1096 kg
  • 2. Bell "patiently in tribulation", tone f sharp ', 734 kg
  • 3rd bell "Stop praying" tone G sharp ', 513 kg
  • 4th bell “Three sisters called down the honorable times, consecrated to the fatherland for protection and defense. The four of us have holy sense of sacrifice again “Ton h ', 312kg.

In 1942 these bells had to be handed in to be melted down, only the smallest bell remained in the tower. In November 1945 it was found that the three delivered bells were stored in a wood store in Stolberg (Rhineland) and were therefore still there. Even the smallest bell in the tower survived the war, despite the fire in the church. The bells have been ringing again since Christmas in 1945.

organ

The Beckerath organ from 1990

A total of three organs were built for the Trinity Church.

The first organ was built in 1893 by the Walcker company ( Ludwigsburg ) with 16 registers on two manuals . In 1944 this organ was completely destroyed by the effects of the war. The second instrument, also with 16 registers, was built in 1951 by the Peter company ( Cologne ).

As more and more signs of wear and tear appeared over the years, the presbytery decided in 1987 to build a new instrument by the organ building company Rudolf von Beckerath Orgelbau (II / 26). The organ was put into service on May 30, 1990. The organ is committed to the "North German Organ Baroque". The expansion (III / 41) was carried out by the builder company Rudolf von Beckerath in spring 2019. The expansion aimed primarily at a larger selection of "romantic" timbres from the 19th and 20th centuries. For this purpose, a swellable "auxiliairewerk" was added as a third manual. A few voices have also been added to the pedal , which give the instrument more gravity.

Baptismal devices

Christening ware, dated 1758

The silver baptismal device consists of a bowl with a diameter of 45 cm and a jug 30 cm high. Both are Rococo works from the second half of the 18th century. The back of the bowl and the front of the jug bear the engraved coat of arms and the name of the donor: Joh. Maria von Recklinghausen WB RVR Hugonis 1758 .

Sacrament device

Lord's Supper from 1710

The communion device made of chased silver consists of a jug, a chalice and a host box. The communion jug is 40 cm high and was donated to the community by Friedrich Stoltenhoff in 1847 . The oldest part is the chalice , which dates from around 1600. On three oval fields, richly decorated, there are engraved inscriptions with words from Psalm 23 : “The Lord is my shepherd” - “The Lord prepares a table for me” - “God's goodness and mercy will follow me”. After the Second World War, a second goblet was made which is an exact replica of the older one. The coats of arms and initials of Charlotte von Grevenberg, who donated the box, are on the host box, as well as the year 1710 on the inside of the lid.

chandelier

chandelier

As part of the efforts to reconstruct the Trinity Church, a total of three chandeliers in the historicist style were commissioned from the Buck / Bielefeld company in 2015 and 2016 . The production of the candlesticks was made possible by the legacy of the Rusch couple, whose names were engraved on the candlesticks.

local community

The Evangelical Congregation includes the city of Eschweiler, with the exception of the districts Weisweiler - Dürwiß . It is divided into two parishes, each with a pastor and a church. The beginnings of the community go back to the 16th century. Initially, church services were celebrated, sometimes secretly, in the surrounding noble residences of Pallandt , von Broich and von Drimborn . The first Protestant church building in Eschweiler was built on Wollenweberstrasse in 1788. After the Protestant population grew from 5% to over 10% in the course of the 19th century, a new church became necessary. After the Second World War, the number of parishioners increased again considerably due to displaced persons and refugees from the former eastern regions and the GDR to around 8,500. In 1961 the Weisweiler-Dürwiß area was parish and has been an independent parish ever since. In 1962 the Friedenskirche was built in the 2nd parish of Pump-Stich . After the Friedenskirche was deedicated at Pentecost 2015, the congregation uses the Catholic Church of St. Barbara in Pump-Stich as a second place of worship in addition to the Trinity Church . The Evangelical Church Community of Eschweiler has around 5100 parishioners.
