You are not alone - The Roy Black Story is a German television film from 1996. The film, produced by the broadcasters RTL and Premiere , premiered on October 9, 1996 and was released on video in 1998 . You are not alone is also the name of a successful German hit song published by Roy Black in 1965 .

Brief description

Gerhard Höllerich, whom his friends call Blacky , is the singer of a little-known Augsburg rock group. But guided by the record industry, he begins a solo career as Roy Black and sings his way into the hearts of a predominantly female audience of millions with romantic hits like All in White . Overnight he became a star, an idol of lonely hearts. But the hype about his person is becoming more and more difficult for the sensitive artist. He feels used because he has to fool the audience into believing that there is no success, he takes refuge in alcohol. After all, he's all down. But then everything seems to turn out fine again. Roy Black starts a successful comeback. Then death overtook him.

content

At the beginning of the film, during the opening credits, you see Roy Black being driven to a hospital for an operation. Meanwhile, his life is shown over time.

1965: Roy Black sings with his rock 'n' roll band The Cannons in an Augsburg pub and is loved by the predominantly female audience. The Cologne Polydor boss Hans Bertram noticed the singer and invited him to record in the studio. But he gives him two tickets and 300 DM There he gets the song. You're not alone , a hit, who (according to Roy Black biography - Sweet Baby My Roys young years ) the answer to Elvis Presley Are you lonesome tonight be should. Roy refuses to sing the song because he's rock 'n' roller and wants to play with the Cannons. But he is persuaded by Bertram and reminded him of the 300 DM. Unexpectedly, the song is played several times on the radio. Bertram sends Roy a check for 20,000 DM and invites him back to the studio with great praise. There he gets his future number 1 hit all in white , which he initially rejects (“That's so funny again”). He sings the song anyway. A replayed video clip of the song is shown and a television appearance in a studio that was designed in the style of the early ZDF hit parade (actually impossible, since the song was published in 1965, but the first ZDF hit parade was broadcast in 1969.) The song is a hit and sells over a million times in Germany alone. Meanwhile, his former bandmates see the performance and are ashamed that the former rock singer has now become a pop singer.

During a photo shoot , he met the photo model Silke Vagts. They get to know each other better at discos and in his fishing hut. There is a scene in a disco where Silke is attacked by female Roy Black fans for stealing Roy Black from them. But when she is in his arms, they are caught by photographers who publish the story as a scandal. Bertram also forbids Roy from meeting (“You don't belong to one woman, you belong to everyone.”) Afterwards Roy tries to explain it to Silke and tries to gently part with her.

1967: Roy Black meets his first love, Nadine, on a flight to London to see Beatles manager Brian Epstein , with whom Bertram wants to achieve a world career. Instead of going with Bertram, he spends time with Nadine, who is a hippie . Bertram later accuses Roy Black of it.

1969: While having fun with two girls, Roy Black realizes that he made a mistake in parting with Silke. He immediately drives to the BRAVO editorial office and apologizes, they forgive him. Together with the editorial team, they watch Neil Armstrong's moon landing .

The next scene shows the filming of a farewell scene from the film When You're With Me , in which Roy Black plays the pilot Chris, who falls in love with a Thai princess.

In the next scene, Roy Black and Anita Hegerland sing in music from Studio B and during a video clip shoot, the song It's beautiful to be in the world . In the subsequent interview, Roy is asked about wedding plans, which he denies. Alcohol consumption starts here and, according to Bertram, the fans are slowly leaving.

1972: At a performance in Cuxhaven the hall is not completely full. The sales of Roy Black records are falling. In a discussion with other Polydor production managers, the placements of Roy Black songs are named and some other prizes are named, such as “Tie Man 1972” or the “Bronze Lion” from Radio Luxemburg . The recording of the song Lonely Without You is even interrupted. Bertram later says that he is no longer his manager. The next few scenes show a family film. Roy Black marries Silke there and they have a son, Thorsten. They move in together.

1978: At a later appearance, Roy meets his future and last manager Wolfgang Kaminsky, with whom he goes on tour. But after a gig, he's had enough of show business and wants to quit. He is driven home by his friend and guitarist Rüdiger. Roy withdraws, listens to music and takes pills. His band mates encourage him to make music again, maybe no hits. He calls Kaminsky and asks him to organize performances. During a performance, he comes on stage drunk and is booed. He collapses behind the stage and is driven home. He walks through the house, but it's completely empty. Silke left him and also took the child with her.

1984: Silke divorces Roy Black. He tries to sort it out with his son and Silke, it doesn't work. He becomes addicted to alcohol and takes pills. At the last moment, Kaminsky and Rüdiger break in the door and save him.

1986: Roy appears on a TV show and sings his song Wahnsinn . He is in very bad shape. Kaminsky suggests canceling the performance, but Roy wants to do it. During the song he collapses and is flown to the heart clinic. Here we come back to the first scene in the film. When Roy asks Black to put sunglasses on him, he says, "I don't want to see all of this". In front of the hospital, the fans are longingly waiting for an answer, and the media are again interested in Roy Black. He makes a comeback.

1987: Roy is behind the scenes preparing to appear at Radio Luxemburg's bronze lion award ceremony. Karl Spiehs congratulates him again and hands him a script for the first episode, Ein Schloss am Wörthersee . Later on stage he sings the song Traum , the German version of the Tommy Seebach hit Endnu . At the end he thanks the audience and says “Goodbye”.

The film ends with a shot of the fisherman's hut on Heldensteiner Silbersee and the line of text "On October 9, 1991 Roy Black died".

criticism

Leading actor Christoph Waltz , who sometimes sings himself in the film, received consistent praise for his acting skills. However, the film itself was often accused of exaggeration. The Berliner Morgenpost commented : "Just because a singer was called Black and became a star with 'All in White' didn't mean that director Peter Keglevic would have had to resort to stark black and white painting."

The lexicon of the international film said: "A solidly staged melodrama about the changeful life of the pop star, which in its statement ultimately remains rather non-binding, but knows how to set some oppressive accents, especially through the excellent leading actor."

Awards

Christoph Waltz received a special award for performance at the Baden-Baden Days of Television Play in 1996 for his portrayal of Roy Black. The following year he won the Bavarian TV Prize . In 1997 the film won the Golden Lion TV Award in the categories of “Best Director TV Film / Series” (Peter Keglevic) and “Best Production Design” ( Martin Schreiber ). He was also nominated in the categories of “Best TV Film / Best Miniseries” and “Best TV Film Actor” (Christoph Waltz).
