Dvbbs ( own spelling DVBBS, original spelling Dubbs ) are a Canadian electronic duo consisting of the brothers Christopher (* 1990) and Alexandre van den Hoef (* 1991). They celebrated their international breakthrough in 2013 with their single Tsunami . At the time of their breakthrough, they were mainly active in the genres of electro , dub and progressive house . Since 2015 they have been developing their style in the fields of future bass and trap .

Career

Until 2012: youth and musical beginnings

The two brothers from Orangeville in the province of Ontario making music together since their youth. They started out with punk and reggae before turning to electronic music. As a teenager, they worked with well-known producers and recorded an album and demos that made it to the radio. Together with the experienced DJ and producer Martin Sinotte alias Beat Chemist from Ottawa, they performed under the name Dubbs from 2009 , with Alex van den Hoef as singer and his brother Chris as drummer, and accompanied artists such as Steve Aoki and on tours and shows LMFAO . In 2010 they won a music competition on the broadcaster MuchMusic and released the EP Generation Party.

After separating from Sinotte, the brothers continued as a duo in 2012 and recorded the EP Initio under the name Dvbbs and released the single Drvgs from it. Appearances with Deadmau5 and Calvin Harris followed. They were awarded the Newcomer Prize at the Canadian Urban Music Awards . In addition to the single Drvgs , the song Come Alive sung by Alex could also be found on the EP , which was the basis for two other successes of the duo. On the one hand, they mixed the track in cooperation with the Russian DJ trio Swanky Tunes in progressive house style and released this remix under the title We Know. Another version called Woozy Anthem was released in collaboration with DJ and producer Eitro in April 2013. An electro-style instrumental and two rap parts by Alex were added to the song.

2013 to spring 2014: breakthrough with tsunami

Dvbbs had their international breakthrough with the title Tsunami , which they recorded together with the US-American DJ John Borger alias Borgeous with the participation of Niles Hollowell-Dhar . The song became a festival hit in the summer of 2013 and was released on the Dutch label Sander van Doorn . After Tsunami entered the top 20 of the Dutch singles charts shortly after its release, the song reached number one in the Nederlandse Top 40 in the third week of the chart in early October 2013 and a little later also number one in Belgium and Poland. In parallel with Martin Garrix ' Animals, the track formed the basis for numerous other big room successes in Europe.

In collaboration with British rapper Tinie Tempah , they recorded a vocal version of their track Tsunami . The remix was released on March 9, 2014. Just a week after its release, the title was number one on the UK singles charts. The remix was not only a commercial one but also a success in British airplay . The piece was also awarded a gold record in Great Britain. For the US release of the song, they brought the American rapper Tyga into the studio. A single release date has not yet been announced, but it is said to be on Tyga's fourth studio album The Gold Album: 18th Dynasty . The vocal version is already available on the Internet. After their success with Tsunami , they started on a production with the Belgian DJ duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and again with Borgeous. The result was the song Stampede , which they released in December 2013 on Spinnin 'and Kontor Records. Based on a synth similar to Tsunami, the song became yet another hit, reaching the top half of the Belgian and French singles charts.

In spring 2014 the track Raveology was released in collaboration with the Italian duo Vinai , with whom they once again moved up to number one in the Beatport Top 100. At the same time, they performed at the Ultra Music Festival in March 2014 . A short time later they released Immortal together with the Dutch DJ Tony Junior and This Is Dirty with MOTi . All of the songs are predominantly instrumental and only contain a few vocals in the break, such as Immortal the text line “Everlasting, we live forever”, which is sung by Dvbbs member Alex. The World Music Awards ceremony took place in May 2014 . The brothers were nominated in the categories “World's Best Song 2014” and “World's Best Video 2014”. They also received a nomination in the “Dance Recording of the Year 2014” category of the Juno Award .

Summer 2014: collaborations and EDM festivals

DVBBS at the Rage Festival 2015

After the Dutch DJ Martin Garrix officially announced that he would be parting with his big room style, he began working in the studio with Dvbbs and Sander van Doorn . The collaboration resulted in the progressive house track Gold Skies, which is sung by singer Aleesia and NeverAgain. The song reached several chart positions, including in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Great Britain. A remix by Dutch DJ Tiësto in electro-house style brought further success and was viewed several million times on YouTube and Spotify. With We Were Young , Dvbbs released another vocal track in late summer 2014 and at the same time, for the first time in two years, a solo single again. In July 2014, Dvbbs first appeared at Tomorrowland in Belgium.

On September 19, 2014 the song Déjà Vu was released on the record label "Spinnin 'Records". The song was recorded with the Dutch DJ and producer Joey Dale , who is known for working with Hardwell . The song contains features of the genres progressive and electro house and received positive reviews in particular for the vocals of the American singers Devyn and Katy, better known as Delora. After the duo played live at the US festival TomorrowWorld 2014 on September 27, 2014, Dvbbs recorded an acoustic version of Gold Skies with Delora , which was released on October 27, 2014. Garrix and van Doorn were not mentioned here.

In cooperation with the Russian DJ trio Dropgun and the rapper Sanjin, the song Pyramids was released on November 24, 2014 . This was first presented on October 18, 2014 in the podcast “ Hardwell On Air ”. The song's drop, however, has been compared to Dropgun's track Amsterdam on its own. Still, the track received mostly positive reviews. Dvbbs started 2015 with a preview of their single Voodoo, which they produced together with the Dutch DJ Jay Hardway , who became known through the song Wizard with Martin Garrix. The track was published on March 2, 2015, but the full version was already played in early February 2015 in the “Hardwell On Air” podcast and in self-made music videos. The song became a success. It made it to the top of the Beatport Top 100 and quickly gained popularity on other internet platforms as well.

2015: Genre variation and ghost production

On May 29, 2015, British DJ and producer Mat Zo posted a list on Twitter listing a selection of ghost producers and the musicians they are co-producing. Sometimes there were also Dvbbs, which are mentioned in connection with Niles Hollowell-Dhar alias KSHMR and Maarten Vorwerk. Vorwerk's collaboration on Dvbb's songs was suspected in advance. A contract signed by Dvbbs for cooperation with Vorwerk even appeared on the Internet, and it turned out to be a fake.

While their production White Clouds, which was used in numerous podcasts weeks before the artists were announced, roamed the Internet in spring 2015 , the duo released the free track Always in April 2015 . The song is very different from their other songs and shows clear traces of tropical, deep and future house, for which they had to take a lot of criticism. White Clouds, on the other hand, was praised. Both Alex's vocals and the instrumental track received positive feedback. The track is supposed to be a sequel to their 2014 song Gold Skies . However, her work on this track was once again heavily questioned. The reason for this is the increasing number of rumors about ghost production.

In the summer of 2015, after several announcements on Facebook and Twitter, her track Raveheart was heard for the first time in the 223rd episode of Hardwell's podcast Hardwell On Air . This has a mixture of progressive and electro house. There are also some similarities to their vinai collab Raveology . On the one hand, the track received very positive feedback because it is recognizable, but also negative criticism because it was produced too specifically and without inspiration. Before the release, however, a free track appeared. Behind this is the song Telephone, which was recorded together with the Danish DJ and producer Mike Hawkins. The publication, like the title, took a back seat because it was viewed very negatively and could not convince musically. Ultimately, on August 3, 2015, Raveheart appeared parallel to the official music video on "Spinnin 'Records".

Her track Never Leave was premiered in another Hardwell on Air episode . The progressive house song quickly became a much bigger hit than their previous releases. A few hours after its release on October 2, 2015, the song was in the download charts in several countries and reached the official single charts for the first time since 2013. In addition, a music video was shot together with Chris and Andre, which is the case for the first time since The Woozy Anthem in 2013.

2016: Genre change and debut album

In early 2016, the duo announced that they were in the middle of working on their debut album. At the 2016 Ultra Music Festival they presented a whole range of new productions. The first single in 2016 was the song Angle together with singer Dante Leon. This corresponded to a mixture of future and deep house. With the track La La Land, which was created in collaboration with Shaun Frank and Delaney Jane, they embodied some trap elements for the first time, which were in the first place in the production 24K. With the exception of Switch, a collaboration with MOTi , they fundamentally moved away from the big room.

Wicked Ways and Not Going Home with CMC $ feat. Gia Koka, lead singles on her EP Beautiful Disaster , which was released on December 2, 2016, marked her final transition to future bass . Not Going Home hit the Canadian and Dutch singles charts.
