The Echelon Open Air & Indoor Festival is an electro and house festival that has been taking place in Bad Aibling near Rosenheim since 2009 . With up to 25,000 visitors in 2015, it is the largest festival of its kind in Bavaria . The one-day festival is organized annually in August by Airport Aibling GmbH .
history
The festival took place for the first time in 2009 as a pure open air festival . Just under 3,500 visitors came to the start. The following year, until April, it was not clear whether the festival could take place. The permit was politically questioned because of possible noise pollution . Finally, it was agreed to bring the festival forward by one day (to Saturday) and to build an additional stage in a former flying hangar. Due to lack of space, only 2,400 of the 7,000 or so visitors could enter the indoor area - the remaining visitors, however, were able to celebrate outside in front of the open air stage. In 2011 the festival took place again as a pure open air festival with a special permit from the city of Bad Aibling. There was no indoor area this year because the old flying hangar had previously been closed due to static problems . Instead, a second open air stage was set up. According to the organizer, the range of the festival increased further, so that visitors from all over Europe, the USA and Canada could already be recorded.
In 2011 Echelon was awarded the Bavarian Festival Prize as the “culturally most valuable music festival 2011”.
In 2012, in addition to the two open air stages, the flying hall was used again as an indoor area. Thus, three stages were available on almost 12,000 m². It was the first Echelon festival that was completely sold out with around 17,000 visitors.
In 2013 the Echelon Open Air, which was sold out with 25,000 visitors, was once again recognized and awarded as one of the most beautiful music festivals in Germany. In particular, the cooperation between the authorities, the organizer (Airport Aibling GmbH) and the Bad Aibling police is considered exemplary in the industry. It was played on 4 stages for the first time in 2013, including the Main Stage for 18,000 people - the Echelon Stage for 10,000 people, the Kater Holzig Stage for 6,000 people and the Indoor Electric Motion Stage for 2,500 people. As an independent festival for electronic music, the Echelon Festival is one of the pioneers in this segment.
In 2014 the Echelon was also sold out with 25,000 visitors. It was evident that the festival was now gaining supraregional importance and that visitors came from all over Europe. It was first played on 5 stages. Main Stage, Wired Stage, Electronic Motion Stage (hall) Kater Mucke, Berlin Stage and VIP Stage in the VIP area. For the first time, the area was expanded and a camping area was created, which was set up especially for a "warm-up" party on the Friday before the actual Echelon Festival for well-traveled guests.
In 2017 the festival had to be interrupted due to storm and rain. There were about ten injured.
Venue
The abandoned Bad Aibling Station serves as the venue for the festival . From 1952 , the US Army took over an old military airfield there, which was then converted into a listening station for the American foreign secret service ASA . The distinctive white domes ( radomes ) also come from this expansion work . They acted as radar systems for the global US spy network Echelon , which gives the festival its name. The station was closed in 2004 and has been used for various events since then.
