Hall in Tirol has been a hospital since 1342, with the Hospital of the Holy Spirit on the lower town square, from 1845 on the Damenstift, which moved to the Knoll estate that was acquired in 1911 ( General District Hospital Hall BKH). Adjacent in Thurnfeldgasse was the k. k. Hall in Tirol lunatic asylum (later PKH psychiatric hospital ). Both provincial hospitals (BKH, PKH) of the then Tyrolean provincial hospitals, now Tirol Kliniken , were merged in 2011 to form the provincial hospital (LKH) . In October 2001 the Private University for Medical Informatics and Technology Tyrol (today for Health Sciences, Medical Informatics and Technology UMIT) was founded in Innsbruck as a subsidiary of the State of Tyrol. Tyrol had not previously had its own medical university, but in 2004 the Medical University of Innsbruck (I-MED) was created from the renowned medical faculty of the University of Innsbruck , which gave rise to two teaching centers. It was therefore decided to relocate UMIT to Hall in order to set up an innovation center for medical technology and IT.
The groundbreaking ceremony was in spring 2003, after 18 months of construction, the Eduard Wallnöfer Center was officially opened on October 26, 2004 . Around 2.5 million euros were invested in the first construction phase. The complex is named after Eduard Wallnöfer (1913–1989), long-time governor of Tyrol, who managed to disguise his membership in the NSDAP after the end of the Second World War ; this only became known again in 2005. UMIT moved to the new campus in the 2004/2005 winter semester. At the beginning, studies in biomedical informatics, health sciences and a course in disaster and crisis management were offered here - in addition to Innsbruck, Hall is also a central air ambulance location . The LKH was expanded to become an academic teaching hospital . At the same time, the West Training Center for Health Professions (AZW) of the Tirol Clinics was established as a second location.
A department of the Austrian Institute of Technology AIT ( Research Center Seibersdorf ) has also been stationed since 2006 . The center became an important partner in the Austrian cancer research program Oncotyrol in Innsbruck, the COMET K1 competence center for cancer monitoring and genome research, and is increasingly focusing on international projects with the Europa-Akademie (EURAK). In 2010, UMIT was hit by a quality crisis when the Accreditation Council withdrew the approval for a degree program and reports were made about the poor quality of the dissertations.
Around 2012 around 1000 students are enrolled at UMIT, and around 100 scientists, professors, visiting professors and trainers, as well as another 50 employees, are active.
The campus - the infrastructure projects - is operated by TCC Errichtungs- und Betriebsgesellschaft mbH (TCC E&B, TILAK Competence Center ), 51% owned by Tirol Kliniken GmbH and 49% owned by UMIT-Holdinggesellschaft, both country daughters.

architecture
The center is characterized by a striking modern architecture that is embedded in the old trees of the park. She comes from the team henke and schreieck (Dieter Henke, Marta Schreieck)
Building No. 1, the main building on the southeast corner of the area, is a mighty atrium building , on a square floor plan with 60 meters of edge, partly three and partly four storeys due to the hillside location (park and street level). The facade is closed all around in storey-high sun protection louvers and opened up through some incisions in the body. The interior is sober, the spacious auditorium opens up to the institute wings, the atrium, and connects the two entrance levels on two floors. The forum on the first floor of the courtyard is roofed with glass.
The dormitory and kindergarten form building no. 2 to the north, also a square closed to the outside, the open inner courtyard with outside stairs and terraces. The common rooms are located on the fully glazed inner wall and allow continuous visual contact, the rooms face outwards with a view of the landscape.
The second construction phase ( Competence Center , west of the main building, towards the LKH) is being planned and should be developed by the same architectural office.
