Wilhelm Eduard Kraus , von Kraus since 1896 (born October 9, 1818 in Neckarbischofsheim , † April 30, 1899 in Baden-Baden ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Eduard was the son of the surgeon Georg Kraus († 1866) and his wife Luise, née Kieffer († 1849).

Military career

Kraus visited Langdorff's private institution in his hometown and on April 1, 1839, joined the 4th Infantry Regiment of the Baden Army in Mannheim . After attending the war school , he was transferred to the 3rd Infantry Regiment as a lieutenant in March 1846 and from mid-November 1846 acted as an adjutant of the 1st Battalion. A year later he was commanded for further training at the higher officer's school in Karlsruhe. This was followed in 1848 on the occasion of the Baden Revolution, a command to the General Staff of the VIII Army Corps and in mid-April he was promoted to first lieutenant . Left in his command, Kraus was aggregated into the Leib Grenadier Regiment on January 2, 1849 and transferred to the Neckar Corps staff at the end of May 1849 . He took part in the storming of Staufen and the battles near Weinheim , Großsachsen , Lützelsachsen and Gernsbach . In November 1850 Kraus worked as a general staff officer in the troop corps in the Seekreis and at the beginning of March 1851 was referred to the War Minister von Roggenbach for special use. This was followed by assignments as an adjutant in the general staff and as a teacher in the cadet corps , until Kraus finally returned to service for a short time as a company commander in the 3rd Infantry Regiment when he was promoted to captain in May 1856 . On January 7, 1857 he was appointed adjutant general to the Grand Duke and in early May 1858 Kraus was appointed adjutant to the infantry command . Transferred to the General Staff in mid-February 1861, from October 1863 he was commanded for two years as a teacher at the Higher War School in Karlsruhe. During this command, Kraus was assigned to the General Staff of the VIII Army Corps as a Major in August 1864 and when the war against Prussia broke out as Sub-Chief. In this position he took part in the battles at Hundsheim , Tauberbischofsheim , Gerchsheim and Hettstadt during the Main Campaign .

After the peace agreement, Kraus returned to the General Staff, was transferred to the newly established 6th Infantry Regiment as a lieutenant colonel at the end of October 1867 and as a battalion commander in March 1868 . He led his regiment in the war against France during the siege of Strasbourg and took over the leadership of the 3rd Infantry Regiment from October 9, 1870 to March 5, 1871 . Using both classes of the Iron Cross and the Commander of the Military Karl-Friedrich-Merit Award, became Kraus end of April 1871 to Colonel and was on July 15, 1871 completion of the military agreement as commander of the 6th Infantry Regiment. 114 in the Association of the Prussian Army taken over. After his farewell, Grand Duke Friedrich I awarded him the Star with Oak Leaves of the Order of the Zähringer Lion with Swords on November 14, 1895 . On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the imperial proclamation , Kraus was raised to the hereditary Prussian nobility on January 18, 1896 .

Kraus was married to Amalie Deimling. The marriage remained childless.
