Eerste Divisie has been the name of the previous top class and the top division in Surinamese football since the 2017/18 season. Only in the previous season was the old name Hoofdklasse changed to Topklasse. The Eerste Divisie is an amateur class. A professional league does not exist in Suriname so far (as of 2019/20).

In the 1923/24 season, the first football championship of Suriname was played in the Hoofdklasse , organized by the Surinamese Football Association (SVB) .

In the 2019/20 season, fourteen top-class teams are playing for the Surinamese football championship. The state and runner-up champions are qualified for the CFU Club Championship .

Top class clubs - season 2016/17

On November 2, 2016, the new season, increased to twelve clubs and renamed from Hoofd to Top Class, started. Only the champion of the 2015/16 season of the previous Eersteklasse , SV Voorwaarts, qualified in sport . Two clubs from the previous Hoofdklasse season, SV Excelsior and SCSV Takdier Boys withdrew their participation. The championship was held again in a two-round system. The order is also the final table for the 2016/17 season. After 22 game rounds, the clubs Inter Moengotapoe and SV Leo Victor both had 49 points, which meant that a play-off was necessary to determine the national champions. This decisive game was played on June 17, 2017 in the André-Kamperveen-Stadion and won 2-1 by Inter Moengotapoe . Both teams are qualified for the Caribbean Club Championship.

Ivanildo Rozenblad from SV Robinhood was the top scorer with 20 goals.

Eerste Divisie Clubs - Season 2017/18

The new season, increased to thirteen clubs, started on October 20, 2017 under the name Eerste Divisie , which has been changed again . Two clubs from the lower division, renamed from Hoofdklasse to Tweede Divisie , have been promoted, while SV Jong Ramban withdrew its participation. The thirteen participating clubs:

The order is also the final table for the 2017/18 season. The state and runner-up SV Robinhood and SV Notch are thus also qualified for the upcoming Caribbean Club Championship.

As in the previous season, Ivanildo Rozenblad from SV Robinhood was top scorer with 22 goals.

Eerste Divisie Clubs - Season 2018/19

The SVB's 2018/19 season for the Surinamese football championship began on November 1, 2018. The highest league has again been increased to a total of sixteen clubs and the championship is held in a two-round system. The participating sixteen clubs:

The order is also the final table for the 2018/19 season. The state and runner-up champions Inter Moengotapoe and SV Robinhood are thus also qualified for the upcoming Caribbean Club Championship.

The SV Papatam and SV Botopasie are in the Tweede Divisie staying.

The top scorer was Renzo Akrosie from the SNL with 33 goals.
