geography

location

In the Waldecker Land in the north-western part of North Hesse, the Eisenberg lies in the east of the Ostsauerland mountain range, which roofs off the Rothaargebirge to the east, and in the outer southeast of the Diemelsee Nature Park . It rises almost 200 m above the Korbach plain to the east , just under 4 km (as the crow flies ) southwest of the city center of Korbach, to whose urban area it belongs. A south-westerly district spreads out on its south-west slope with the village of Goldhausen , and at the south-east foot lies the district of Nordenbeck . To the south of it rises the Wiperich ( 423.3  m ) with the Ober-Ense district on the other side and the source of the Eder tributary Itter above it to the west . The Epper Pass northwest of the Eisenberg is flanked by its tributary Marbeck , which rises in the adjoining Wipperberg massif (up to 538 m).

Mountain height

The Eisenberg is shown on current topographic maps at a height of 560.0 m. The height indication 562 m is also in circulation, which presumably refers to the indication "562.1 m" in the table sheet 4718 (formerly 2730) Goddelsheim (especially the issues from 1900 to 1944).

Dominance and prominence

The dominance of the Eisenberg is at least 6.0 km. You have to move away from it at least that far in order to get to a higher point in the terrain on the foreshore of the Vorderpländer ridge , which is 635 m high on the Widdehagen , namely on the Echternberg , the height of which was specified on measuring table 4618 Adorf as 573.1 m . To reach this high point on the watershed between the Aar and the Lower Orke , which merges exactly at the Echternberg into the Eder - Diemel -Wasserscheide , you have to go down to at least 548 m, the saddle is about 1 km northwest of the Eisenberg summit, near the Hängetal residential area , at the Epper Pass (see next section). The prominence of the Eisernberg is 112 m.

While the Vorderpländer ridge is in the north, you have to drive 8.9 km to the west to reach heights of over 560 m on the eastern slope of the 594.4 m high Hardt on the northeastern roof of the high side . To the southeast, to the Kellerwald , you have to drive 16.7 km behind you to reach a higher point on the north slope of the 626.4 m high Traddelkopf , to the Hohen Habichtswald in the east-northeast it is even more than 36 km.

Natural allocation

The Eisenberg was in the natural spatial structure 1: 200,000 on sheet 111 Arolsen from 1963 in the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33), in the main unit Ostsauerländer Gebirgsrand (332) and in the subunit Grafschafter Bergland (332.5) to the natural area Eschenberg-Eisenbergrücken ( with Epper pass) (332.50). The Epper Pass as part of the natural area describes the connection from the Korbach Plain to the Medebach Bay along the state road 3083 via Eppe , which flanks the ridge in the northwest.

Eschenberg-Eisenberg ridge

The Eschenberg is the main mountain of the natural area and ridge of the Eschenberg-Eisenbergrücken , which is divided into three elevations from northeast to southwest:

  • Eisenberg (560.0 m)
  • Teufelshohl (501.0 m)
    • Büddenberg (481.1 m)
  • Eschenberg (535.0 m)

Only the Eisenberg is in the Diemelsee Nature Park . The Teufelshohl is an intermediate summit that can be reached from Eisenberg via Goldhausen without falling below the 480 m height line, so it has a notch height of only 20 m. His Westriedel Büddenberg is connected to him by a gap at about 465 m.

In contrast, the Eschenberg is already a quite independent mountain. Its notch to the Teufelshohl and thus to the Eisenberg is about 468 m, which leads to a prominence of 67 m. Its dominance over the Eisenberg is about 3.3 km, the two peaks are 3.7 km apart. After 3.5 km to the north-north-west there is a higher point on the Wipperberg, to the west-north-west there is a higher point on the Heimberg (537.8 m) 4.3 km away .

Not far from Eisenberg and Eschenberg there are further elevations in the north of the Goddelsheimer Feld , which orographically are foothills of the two mountains:

  • Böhlen (495 m, notch to Eschenberg at around 468 m), ridge southeast parallel to Eschenberg
  • Wiperich (423.3 m, notch to the ridge at about 418 m), south of the Goldberg
  • Ensenberg (450.6 m, notch to the ridge at about 432 m), south of the Wiperich

Eisenberg castle ruins

Eisenberg castle ruins

The Eisenberg castle ruins are located on the Eisenberg at the foot of the observation tower . The builders of the hilltop castle built in the 13th century are not known. It is first mentioned in documents in 1345. The foundation walls, wall and moat are still there.

Georg Viktor Tower

Next to the castle ruins is the Georg-Viktor-Turm observation tower on the Eisenberg, which bears his name in honor of Prince Georg Viktor zu Waldeck and Pyrmont , was inaugurated on June 3, 1905 and is 22.5 m high.

From its viewing platform you can look to the northeast of Korbach, to the east to the Habichtswälder Bergland , to the south to the Ederhöhen and the Kellerwald , and to the west to the Rothaargebirge . In addition, one looks at the castle ruins at the base of the tower. The tower is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from May to October.

gold

The gold of the Eisenberg was already mined in the Middle Ages, but mining came to a standstill during the Thirty Years War . Some attempts to resume production were made in the 20th century but were unsuccessful. About 10 tons of gold are still believed to be in the mountain, but mining is unprofitable due to the fine distribution in the rock and would involve massive impacts on the environment. The brooks rising near the mountain (including Itter ) contribute significantly to the gold content of the Eder.

More information about gold and mining can be found in the visitor mine on the Eisenberg , the local museum in Korbach and the nature trail Goldspur Eisenberg on the mountain ,

Sights and culture

The sights and cultural aspects of the Eisenberg include:

Traffic and walking

State road  3083 ( Eppe - Lengefeld –Korbach) and L 3076 ( Ober-Ense - Nordenbeck –Korbach) to the south-east leads past Eisenberg . Both roads connect, for example, between Lengefeld and Nordenbeck, the district road  57, which runs northeast of the mountain, and also the K 56, which begins in Nordenbeck, in the west and south. The latter leads through Goldhausen, where side roads leading to the mountain branch off. The educational path Goldspur Eisenberg runs on and over the mountain , the hiking trails Barbarossaweg , Waldecker Weg and Sauerland-Höhenflug lead directly past .
