history
Together with the construction of the oil and gas turbine power station , the city, whose name refers to electricity , was founded in 1962. In the past few years, this power plant has only led a shadowy existence in competition with the Ignalina nuclear power plant and only a fraction of its capacity (1800 MW) was used. After the closure of Ignalina in 2009, this power plant again became the largest electricity producer in Lithuania.
The cityscape is characterized by prefabricated buildings from the 1960s and 1970s. The large modern St. Mary's Church was built in 1996 after the country's independence as a response to the long years as the first atheistic model town in the former Soviet Republic of Lithuania.
