The Laura Bassi is a research ship of the Italian research institute Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale in Trieste . It serves primarily the Italian Antarctic research program. Until 2018, the ship was used under the name Ernest Shackleton as part of the British polar research program British Antarctic Survey (BAS).

history

The ship was built in 1995 under hull number 267 at the Kværner Klevin Leirvik shipyard for the Bergen- based company Rieber Shipping. The keel was laid in September 1994, the launch in July 1995. The ship was completed on September 28, 1995. It started sailing as the Polar Queen under the flag of Norway with its home port in Bergen.

In 1999 the ship was chartered to the British Antarctic Survey on the basis of a bareboat charter contract . The charter contract expired The ship that the 2018. Bransfield replaced, was named after the British polar explorer in Ernest Shackleton renamed in Stanley on the Falkland Islands registered. In 2019 it was replaced by the new research vessel Sir David Attenborough .

In 2019, the Italian Ministry of Education and Research acquired the ship for the Trieste Geophysical Institute . It replaces the supply and research ship Italica , which was decommissioned in 2017 and was commissioned by the Italian Antarctic research program . The ship is primarily used for Italy's Antarctic research program. One of the tasks of the ship is to supply the Mario Zucchelli station and thus also the Dome Concordia station on the Antarctic continent .

As part of the Polar Research of the United Kingdom it was until 2018 both in Südpolar- , but also in the northern polar region used. In the Antarctic it supplied the Halley station .

Technical data and equipment

It is driven by two diesel engines from the manufacturer Bergen Marine, each with an output of 2,550  kW , which act on a variable-pitch propeller with a Kort nozzle via a reduction gear . In addition, the ship has four electrically powered transverse thruster systems , two in the bow and two in the stern , as well as a propeller gondola in the bow, which can also serve as an emergency drive in the event of a drive failure. The ship has a dynamic positioning system .

For the power supply are two wave generators , each with 2,000 kW and two Mitsubishi - diesel generators (type: S6R-MPTK) each with 600 kW power. A Mitsubishi emergency generator (type: 6 D 22 T) with 150 kW output was also installed.

At the stern of the ship there is a helideck (18 meters in diameter) that is suitable for use by Super Puma helicopters.

The ship has two holds with steerage , to load to equipment and supplies. The cargo holds offer around 3,000 m³ of space. Containers can also be stowed in the front hold and on the hatch cover . For cargo handling, the ship is equipped with a crane that can lift 30 t with a 20 meter extension. The ship carries a work boat with an open deck and a bow ramp , with the help of which goods can be brought ashore or to the edge of the ice that the ship itself cannot reach.

For research tasks, the ship has a dry and a wet laboratory as well as the option of taking two laboratory containers (20-foot containers) on board. The ship is equipped with various logs , sonar and echo sounders as well as winches . It is also equipped for the use of an ROV and, in addition to other lifting tools, has a crane that can lift 50 t with a 10 meter extension.

The superstructures with the navigating bridge are located in the front area of ​​the ship. There is a crow's nest in the mast on the deckhouse . On board there is space for 72 people (including the ship's crew), for which 37 cabins (one to four-bed cabins) are available.

The ship can stay at sea for up to 130 days, covering up to 40,000  nautical miles . The hull of the ship is reinforced with ice . The ship is classified as an icebreaker .
