Ernst Wilhelm Moritz Otto Freiherr Schuler von Senden (born April 12, 1812 in Breslau , † January 16, 1899 in Dessau ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Ernst Wilhelm Schuler von Senden was the youngest son of the Prussian infantry general Friedrich Schuler von Senden (1753–1827) and his wife Theodora, née von Schweinitz. The father had received the order Pour le Mérite in 1807 and ended his military career as commandant of Wroclaw .

Military career

Senden had been a cadet in Berlin since April 1826 and was employed on July 29, 1829 as porter ensign in the 2nd Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army . On November 11, 1830 he was second lieutenant and a month later transferred to the 34th Infantry Regiment . Between 1836 and 1838 he was posted to the General War School in Berlin. On May 11, 1838, he was used for a year to serve in the Guard Artillery Brigade, then he served for three years as a teacher at the division school of the 15th Division . On January 20, 1844 he was promoted to prime lieutenant, on July 15, 1848 he was promoted to captain and company commander .

On July 14, 1856 he was promoted to major and posted to Anklam , where he was III. Battalion of the 2nd Landwehr Regiment took over. He was reassigned on January 18, 1859, this time as battalion commander in Infantry Regiment No. 21 . On October 18, 1861 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on January 29, 1863 appointed commander of the 3rd Rhenish Infantry Regiment No. 29 . After he was promoted to colonel on March 17, 1863 , he led his regiment in the 1866 war against Austria in the Union of the Elbarmee in the battle of Münchengrätz . He was then briefly deputy commander of the 31st Infantry Brigade and took over a combined brigade in the II Reserve Corps during the campaign. For his services he was awarded the Order of the Crown III. Excellent with swords. On September 15, 1866, he took command of the 17th Infantry Brigade and was promoted to major general on September 20 .

At the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War he led the 3rd Landwehr Division . It was not until August 1870 that this division marched off to support the siege troops from Metz . Senden participated in the Battle of Noisseville in late August . The Prussians invaded Noisseville three times and were driven out of the place three times. On October 2nd he fought at Saint Remy, on October 7th, 1870 at Les Tapes-Bellevue. His division was then assigned to General Manteuffel's corps , and he led his division to the Somme . At the end of November he took over the blockade of Mezieres, and later that of Péronne, under the command of General Kameke . After the surrender of the small fortress Rocroi , which he reached on January 5th, Senden was promoted to lieutenant general on January 18, 1871 .

As early as January 5th he had succeeded General Kameke, he took over command of the 14th Division , which operated in the Association of the Southern Army under General von Manteuffel against the French in the Jura . On January 14th his troops were at Marac, but after the skirmishes at Sombacour and Chaffois on January 29th, the armistice soon followed . On March 3, 1871, Senden was awarded the Order of Pour le Mérite, having previously received both classes of the Iron Cross . After the war, he took command of the 12th Division in July 1871 . On September 17, 1872 Send was awarded the Red Eagle on rings with First Class with Oak Leaves and Swords board for disposition made.

On April 26, 1842, Senden married Marie Elisabeth Kamp (1818–1897) in Cologne, a daughter of the banker Heinrich Kamp , a member of the Prussian manor house . The following children were born from the marriage:

  • Elisabeth Hedwig Marie (1853–1936) ⚭ Alexander Freiherr von Falkenhausen (1844–1909), Prussian Rittmeister. From this marriage there were seven children, including General Alexander von Falkenhausen (1878–1966).
