Ernst von Bodelschwingh (District Administrator)

Ernst von Bodelschwingh (born April 12, 1830 at Haus Heyde near Unna , † March 20, 1881 in Hamm ) was initially an officer and then for 14 years the district administrator of the Hamm district .

Ernst's full first names were: Ernst Carl Christian Friedrich Constantin Adolph. He came from the old Westphalian noble family von Bodelschwingh and was the second of eleven children and the eldest son of the Prussian finance minister Carl von Bodelschwingh (1800–1873). His uncle (older brother of his father) was the Prussian Minister of State Ernst von Bodelschwingh (1794-1854). Through his younger sister Ida (1835-1894) he was brother-in-law of the later famous " Father Bodelschwingh " (1831-1910), who set up the von Bodelschwinghschen Anstalten Bethel .

In 1840 Ernst was accepted into the sixth class of the Hammer Gymnasium . He left it at Easter 1845 and then attended grammar school in Münster , where his father had been transferred as government vice-president. In 1851 he obtained his school- leaving certificate at the grammar school in Arnsberg , where his father was the district president at the time . On September 29, 1857, he married his half-aunt Marie Freiin von Bodelschwingh-Plettenberg (1837–1933) from the Bodelschwingh house near Dortmund in Düsseldorf . They had eleven children. He was the owner of the Binkhoff estate in ( Bönen -) Altenbögge, which had belonged to Heyde since 1768.

Ernst died suddenly on March 20, 1881 in Hamm while suffering from pneumonia caused by a heart attack at the age of 50. He was transferred to Haus Heyde and buried on March 24th in the family cemetery there. His bones probably still rest there, although the cemetery was closed in 1938. The Hellweger Anzeiger in Unna dedicated a very laudatory obituary to him on March 23, 1881, in which he was described as a “real representative of the Prussian civil service”.

Officer and civil servant career

On October 1, 1851, Ernst joined the 5th Westphalian Uhlan Regiment in Düsseldorf as a volunteer . On June 2, 1852 he was promoted to portepeef ensign , on March 10, 1853 to second lieutenant , on May 31, 1859 to premier lieutenant with appointment as regimental adjutant . 1864 Participation in the Austro-Prussian war against Denmark. On March 13, 1866 promotion to captain and squadron chief in this regiment. In 1866, like his three brothers, he took part in the German war against Austria.

After the war he left the military and was employed by the government in Arnsberg from February 22, 1867 to introduce civil administration. On January 25, 1867, he was elected the first candidate for the Hamm district office with a majority of votes and on August 7, 1867, with the passing of the examination, he was appointed district administrator of the Hamm district, which at that time also included the city and the office of Unna. His father Carl von Bodelschwingh (1800–1873) had been the district administrator of this district from 1837 to 1844. Ernst held the office until his untimely death.

At the 20th Provincial Parliament of Westphalia in 1871 he took part as a deputy member; from 1873 to 1875 he was a member of the provincial parliament.

He was married to Luise Elise Wilhelmine Friederike Marie von Bodelschwingh-Plettenberg (born June 15, 1837) since September 29, 1857 . The couple had the following children:
