Ernst Rudolf Max Edler von der Planitz (born July 4, 1836 in Dresden , † November 30, 1910 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian colonel general .

Life

origin

Ernst came from the Vogtland noble family von der Planitz . He was the son of Gustav Adolf von der Planitz (1802–1869) and his wife Marie, born von Watzdorff (1808–1862). His father was Herr auf Kaschwitz , royal Saxon court and judicial councilor and ducal Saxon-Altenburg secret council and minister. The later Prussian general of the artillery Max von der Planitz (1834-1910) was his older brother.

Military career

Planitz visited the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin . On May 1, 1855, he was transferred as a second lieutenant to the 2nd Dragoons Regiment of the Prussian Army and attended the General War School from 1858 to 1861 . Subsequently, Planitz acted as a regimental adjutant and advanced to prime lieutenant in mid-November 1862 . As such, he was in command of the 2nd Landwehr Dragoons Regiment from August 11, 1864 to May 6, 1866. During the war against Austria in 1866 he led the 5th squadron of his regiment, initially in the battle of Gitschin . In the battle of Königgrätz , Planitz was able to prove himself particularly well. He managed to capture three officers and 100 men near the village of Horenowes . He was wounded in an attack against an Austrian battalion .

Awarded the Red Eagle Order IV. Class with Swords, Planitz was promoted to Rittmeister after the peace treaty and transferred to the newly formed Dragoon Regiment No. 12 in Woldenberg as head of the 3rd Squadron . In mid-December 1869 he was transferred to the General Staff and from there Planitz came to the General Staff of the 16th Division on March 24, 1870 . When mobilizing on the occasion of the war against France , he was initially assigned as a general staff officer to the general staff of the General Government on the Rhine . After the Battle of Sedan , he joined the General Staff of the Grand Headquarters and witnessed the siege of Paris . On January 4, 1871, Planitz was assigned to the general staff of Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia . He distinguished himself particularly in the January battles on the Loire and received the Iron Cross 2nd class for the Battle of Le Mans .

After the Peace of Frankfurt he was transferred to the Schleswig-Holstein Hussar Regiment No. 16 on July 15, 1871 . Planitz belonged to this association for the next 18 years without interruption, most recently as a colonel and commander. In position à la suite of his regiment, he was commissioned on February 14, 1885 to lead the 28th Cavalry Brigade and on March 26, 1885, Planitz was appointed commander of this large unit in Karlsruhe . In this capacity, he was promoted to major general on February 14, 1888 . Army Corps , before Planitz was promoted to Lieutenant General on March 24, 1890 and appointed commander of the Guard Cavalry Division . On the occasion of the visit of the Italian Crown Prince Viktor Emanuel to Berlin in June 1890, Planitz was ordered to do his honorary service. From March 16 to June 13, 1895 he was in charge of the sick inspector of the 2nd Cavalry Inspection, Lieutenant General Heinrich von Rosenberg , and then succeeded him as inspector. On January 2, 1896, he was promoted to General of the Cavalry and on April 1, 1898, he was appointed Inspector General of the Cavalry . In this position, Planitz received several awards for his services. He was the owner of the Grand Crosses of the Saxon-Ernestine House Order , the Red Eagle Order with Oak Leaves and Swords, the Knightly Order of St. Mauritius and Lazarus and the Bavarian Order of Military Merit . He was also awarded the house order of the diamond crown and on June 11, 1900, Planitz was knighted by the Order of the Black Eagle . On the occasion of his 50th anniversary in service, Wilhelm II awarded him the Order of Merit of the Prussian Crown . In mid-September 1906 he was promoted to Colonel General, before Planitz was finally put on the disposition of the Grand Commander of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with the statutory pension at his own request and with the award of the cross .

On the occasion of his death, the emperor decreed that all officers of the cavalry were to mourn for three days. On behalf of Wilhelm II, Prince Eitel Friedrich of Prussia took part in the funeral service for Planitz.
