The Essex County is a county in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . Administrative centers ( the county seat ) are Salem and Lawrence . After the county government was abolished in 1999, the county only exists as a historical geographic region and serves some administrative purposes.

government

Like a slim majority of Massachusetts counties, Essex County no longer has a county government. All previous functions of the county were taken over by state authorities in 1999. The sheriff and a few other regional officials with special duties are still locally elected to serve within the county. The municipalities now have greater autonomy and can conclude regional contracts to offer services together.

The county has an area of ​​2,146 square kilometers, of which 849 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Rockingham County, New Hampshire , Suffolk County, and Middlesex County .

Essex County was one of Massachusetts' four founding counties in 1643.

There are two National Historic Sites in the county , the Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site and the Salem Maritime National Historic Site . 27 sites have the status of a National Historic Landmark . A total of 474 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 17, 2017).

Demographics

According to the 2000 census , Essex County's population was 723,419 in 275,419 households and 185,081 families. The population was composed of 86.44 percent white, 2.60 percent African American, 2.34 percent Asian, and 0.23 percent Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 11.04 percent of the population. The per capita income was $ 26,358; 6.6 percent of families and 8.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
