Evelyn is an English first and family name . As a first name it is usually female, but there are also male namesake in English-speaking countries, for example Richard Evelyn Byrd . In German, however, the name is practically exclusively regarded as female.

origin

Originally the English form of the Anglo-Norman name Aveline , which in turn is a nickname of the Germanic name Ava . Since the origin of Ava has not been proven with certainty, no reliable information can be given about Evelyn. One possible interpretation would be little bird . The Irish variant of Aveline is Eibhlin , which became Eileen in anglicised form .

Today the name is also used as a further training for Eve (see Eva ).
