The Expressway 65 ( kor. 동해 고속도로 ) is an expressway in South Korea . The road runs along the east coast of South Korea and currently consists of two parts, a part of Busan to Ulsan and a somewhat more northerly part, the bypass of Gangneung forms. Both parts together are approx. 132 kilometers long. It is planned to connect the two parts of the motorway with each other.

Street description

Busan - Ulsan

The highway begins on the east side of Busan , where the south coast connects to the east coast. The motorway here runs north along the mountainous coast, usually no more than a few kilometers from the sea. There are only a few small towns along the coast. The highway then runs west of the industrial city of Ulsan . The motorway ends at the motorway junction with Expressway 16 . This section is 85.08 km long.

Gangneung

The second part of the highway begins in the coastal town of Donghae , around 220 kilometers north of Ulsan. The motorway runs here almost directly on the beach and then turns and runs a little further inland through some tunnels. The mountains here are over 1000 meters high. The highway then runs west of Gangneung , one of the largest cities in northeast South Korea with 230,000 inhabitants. On the northwest side of the city, Expressway 50 joins Expressway 65. The highway ends in Yangyang , about 50 kilometers south of the border with North Korea . This section is 47.2 km long.

history

The history of the Expressway 65 goes back quite a long way for South Korean concepts. On March 26, 1974, construction began between Donghae and Gangneung and on October 14, 1975 this section of the highway was opened with a lane. In 1999, construction work began to expand this section to 2x2 lanes, which was completed in 2004. There were several new tunnels for this project. All of the highways in northeastern South Korea were built with one lane. On November 4, 2001, construction began on the section between Busan and Ulsan. This section was opened to traffic on December 29, 2008. On November 27, 2009, the section from Gangneung to Hajodae opened .

future

There are no concrete plans for the entire construction of the line, but since June 2009 another section from Ulsan to Pohang has been under construction on the southern section . This section is about 54 kilometers long and is to be provisionally put into operation on December 29, 2015 [obsolete] and to be finally completed in March 2016 [obsolete] . In the northern section, an extension of 18.6 km from Samcheok to Dunghae and an extension of 18.5 km from Yangyang (Hajodae) to Sokcho at the northern end has been under construction since March 2009 . These two sections should be completed by the end of 2016 [obsolete] . Sokcho is located about 35 kilometers south of the border with North Korea.
