List of highways in South Korea
The highways in South Korea were originally numbered in the order in which they were built. Since August 24, 2001, they are numbered similar to the scheme of the interstate highways of the USA. The signs on the South Korean highways are, similar to those in the United States, red, white and blue.
numbering
- The first and most important highway, the Gyeongbu Expressway , is number 1.
- The main routes ( Arterial routes ) are designated by two-digit numbers, the north-south routes with odd numbers and the east-west routes with even numbers. Primary major routes (i.e., major thoroughfares) have 5 or 0 as the last digit, while secondary major routes have different digits.
- The branch routes have three-digit numbers, whereby the first two digits come from the route number of the corresponding main route.
- The ring motorways ( belt lines ) also have three-digit numbers, but the first digit corresponds to the respective postcode of the city and is followed by two zeros.
- The numbers in the range 70 to 99 are not used in South Korea as they are reserved for designations in the event of reunification with North Korea .
