The FC Nordsjælland ( FCN ) is a Danish football club based in Farum , Furesø Municipality , a suburb of Copenhagen .

history

The club is an amalgamation of the first teams of smaller clubs from various municipalities in the north of the island of Zealand in the Hovedstaden region to form a professional team. The clubs Espergærde IF, Farum Boldklub, Græsted IF, Helsinge SI, Hundested BK, Slagslunde-Ganløse IF, FC Jonstrup and Måløv Boldklub are currently involved and continue to exist independently. The basic idea of this cooperation is the improvement of the sporting environment for young players as well as the establishment of a network of clubs from the North Sealand region for better marketing. This followed a concept that has been successfully practiced in Denmark in particular, which is intended to enable smaller clubs to establish themselves permanently in the top division in terms of economy and sport. In contrast to clubs like FC Copenhagen or FC Midtjylland , however, the FCN is not about the delimited amalgamation of two clubs, but rather an open project. The participation of other associations from the region is expressly sought.

In its first three years, FC Nordsjælland were consistently first class, but they found themselves in the lower half of the table. When Morten Wieghorst took over the position of coach in 2006, there should be constant improvement. In the first season FC Nordsjælland managed to place fifth in the table, which should be a slip up at first, as they finished ninth in the following season. Morten Wieghorst's collaboration with the new assistant coach Kasper Hjulmand and the board of directors led to a sporting upswing that resulted in places eight, seven and six in the coming years. In 2010 and 2011 they won the Danish Cup, both times against FC Midtjylland . In 2011 Wieghorst left the team to take over Denmark's U-21 national team . His assistant coach Kasper Hjulmand took over the inheritance. Wieghorst's concept was continued with his successor, Hjulmand. The team strengthened u. a. with the Danish national players Mikkel Beckmann and Patrick Mtiliga and talents from their own offspring, one of which was the future national player Jores Okore . After a moderate start from the first three games (two defeats, one draw), they won twelve of the next 15 games and finished second in the table at the end of the first half of the season. In the second half of the season there was a long-distance duel with leaders FC Copenhagen , which they defeated 1-0 on the fifth last match day. In the following last four games, three wins could be achieved, while Copenhagen only won once. The FC Nordsjælland conquered the table lead and defended it until the end of the season. The greatest success in the club's history was perfect and FC Nordsjælland celebrated winning the Danish championship. In the 2012/13 season, the club was runner-up.
