In 1989, the former Spanish triathlete Marisol Casado (* 1956) was a founding member of the Spanish triathlon association "Federación Española de Triatlón", of which she has been vice president since 2008.
In the same year, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded on the initiative of the Spaniard and then IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch in Avignon in 1989 to give the triathlon an official framework in the course of its increasing popularity.
From 2002 to 2009 Marisol Casado was President of the European Triathlon Union and since 2008 she has been President of the ITU.
Eleven years after the association was founded, the sport of triathlon was accepted as an Olympic discipline in 2000.
