Ferdinand Heinrich Erdmann Ewald von Massow (born January 28, 1830 in Oels , † November 19, 1878 in Posen ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Ferdinand came from the noble family von Massow . He was the son of Heinrich von Massow (1783–1865), a Prussian lieutenant colonel a. D. and knight of the order Pour le Mérite , and his wife Sophie, née Schmiedel (1810–1870).

Military career

Massow attended elementary school and high school in his hometown. Then he went through the cadet houses in Wahlstatt and Berlin . On April 1, 1848 he was transferred to the 12th Hussar Regiment of the Prussian Army as a second lieutenant . In the following year Massow took part in the fighting at Ladenburg and Kuppenheim as well as in the siege of Rastatt as part of the suppression of the revolutionary unrest during the campaign in Baden . After two years of command at the military riding school, he was promoted to prime lieutenant in June 1857 and served as squadron leader in the 12th Landwehr Hussar Regiment from April to September 1858. As a result of his high riding skills, Massow was transferred to the military riding school in Schwedt / Oder as a riding instructor on October 1, 1858 , and was promoted to Rittmeister in this position on May 31, 1859 . Left in this command, he was appointed squadron chief in Thuringian Hussar Regiment No. 12 on September 7, 1861 , and took up his post in Merseburg on October 1, 1861 . Because of his achievements in the command of the troops recommended by his superiors for preferential promotion or use in the General Staff , Massow was promoted to major on April 18, 1865 and transferred to the General Staff in Berlin. From there he came to the General Staff of the 8th Division in Erfurt on March 24, 1866 . In this position he took part in the battles near Liebenau , Podol , Münchengrätz , Königgrätz and Blumenau during the war against Austria .

After the peace agreement , Massow was awarded the Red Eagle Order IV. Class with Swords and on October 30, 1866 , was transferred to Schleswig as a regular staff officer in Hussar Regiment No. 16 . Massow was promoted to lieutenant colonel on March 22, 1868 after only 20 years of service as commander of the Litthau Dragoon Regiment No. 1 . During the war against France , his regiment formed the division cavalry of the 1st Division under Lieutenant General von Bentheim in 1870/71 . Massow was active in the fighting at Colombey , Noisseville and the siege of Metz . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross for his behavior , he was promoted to colonel on the day of the imperial proclamation .

In position à la suite of his regiment, Massow was commanded to Württemberg on December 2, 1871 and appointed commander of the 27th Cavalry Brigade (2nd Royal Württembergische) . In this position he rose to major general on July 9, 1875 and received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class, with oak leaves and swords on the ring on September 23, 1876. On June 2, 1877, Massow was released from the command in Württemberg at his request and appointed commander of the 10th Cavalry Brigade in Posen. There he died after a short illness of a bladder ailment and was buried on November 23, 1878 in Dieskau .

family

Massow had married Ottonie von Bülow (1840-1911) on March 3, 1868 in Dieskau . The daughter Ottonie Klara (* 1869) emerged from the marriage and on January 29, 1890 she married the later Prussian major general Dietrich von Trotha (1857-1914).
