The beautiful dancer and singer Fiakermilli is the sensation in the Viennese restaurant "Burgundisches Kreuz" and always ensures a full house. Only theater critic Dr. Robert Zögel tears up Milli's performances in one of his articles. Without Milli knowing who he really is, they both fall in love. When the young woman learns his true identity, she forgives him. She even declares that she is ready to forego her beloved appearances in the future, as Zögel wants to turn her into a serious artist. His friend Johann Fürst cast Milli in Friedrich Schiller's drama Die Räuber in the role of Amalia von Edelreich, but the premiere of the play is a total failure. Milli is whistled. Even with the fighting back tears, awakened her old fighting spirit: It goes back to the stage and dances a cancan that excites the audience immediately. Robert Zögel, however, feels betrayed by Milli and turns away from her. Milli, who genuinely loves him, has a hard time taking it, whereby she also makes her jealousy of her niece Liesel to create. Liesel has feelings for Zögel, but realizes very quickly that he only loves Milli and reconciles Milli and Zögel again.

In her cloakroom, Zögel proposed to Milli, but made it a condition that she had to give up her stage career. Milli decides with a heavy heart for the stage and against Zögel. At a later appearance she suddenly sees Robert among the audience. When their eyes meet, he raises his glass and smiles at her. Milli now knows that their mutual love still has a chance.

The film is based in the framework data on the story of Emilie Turecek , called "Fiaker-Milli", a Viennese folk singer who lived from 1848 to 1889. She performed in amusement shops as well as at laundress and fiaker balls. Her appearances in jockey costume with tight-fitting pants and riding crop caused a sensation. She needed a police permit to wear these men's clothes.

Hugo von Hofmannsthal immortalized the figure of Fiakermilli in his libretto for Richard Strauss ' opera Arabella .
