Rick Grimes (Seasons 1-9, 10 )

Andrew Lincoln , cast member for Rick Grimes

Rick is the Deputy Sheriff in the fictional King County and is shot during an operation, whereupon he falls into a coma . He is married to Lori and has a twelve year old son, Carl. When he woke up from his coma weeks later, the world had long since been plagued by a deadly disease in which most people mutated into bloodthirsty zombies. He finds his family alive and quickly establishes himself as the leader of a group of Atlanta survivors. In the first two seasons, Rick shows a strong sense of responsibility and has high moral standards that are reflected in all of his actions. For this reason, Rick is always valued and respected as a leader in the group, even if not all of his decisions are based on full understanding within the group. Taken by the events of the second season, and during the period of difficult decisions he made, he makes it clear that he sees himself as the undisputed leader of the group. Over time, Rick develops a close, brotherly friendship with Daryl. The loss of Lori in the third season throws him off track at times and lets him cool down a bit inside.

At the end of the fifth season - and after various harrowing encounters with hostile outsiders - Rick's own urge to survive increasingly determines his actions. The only people to whom his trust and loyalty remain unwavering are the members of his own group, whom he has long considered his own family. Rick is no longer willing to trust strangers and is only convinced by Michonne to follow Aaron to a camp set up by other people in Alexandria. For a long time he then refused to accept the people of Alexandria as his own people. This causes displeasure among his friends, who have begun new relationships and friendships with Alexandria residents, including Carl, Glenn, Tara and Michonne. After Alexandria is overrun by a herd of walkers and Carl is seriously injured by a missed shot, Rick stands alone against the herd and is supported by the other residents. This key experience causes a fundamental rethink at Rick and he decides to build a new world worth living in for his children together with his people. He starts a relationship with Michonne. Rick shows an interest in building diplomatic ties with other peaceful communities like the Hilltop Colony, which the group learns about in the second half of season six.

In order to swap supplies, Rick's group carried out several brutal attacks on a gang of men led by a man named Negan, who they knew only from stories and had been terrorizing Hilltop for some time. Rick underestimates the danger emanating from the apparently cleverly organized, well-equipped and numerically superior group and at the end of the sixth season he becomes captive together with Glenn, Rosita, Daryl, Michonne, Abraham, Maggie, Carl, Eugene, Aaron and Sasha .

Shane Walsh (Seasons 1-2, 9 )

Jon Bernthal , cast member of Shane Walsh

Shane is Rick's best friend and colleague in the police force. He's there when Rick is shot and falls into a coma. After the zombie virus breaks out, he barricades the door to Rick's hospital room so that no undead can enter. To convince Lori and Carl to flee the city, Shane claims that Rick is dead. Shane moves on with Lori and her son and starts an affair with her. You team up with other survivors.

When Rick later joins the group, the relationship with Lori comes to an abrupt end. For Carl, however, he still remains a kind of father figure. Since Shane continues to have strong feelings for Lori, he suffers from Rick's return; he is torn between his friendship and loyalty to Rick and his love for Lori and Carl, whom he now regards as his own family. Just like Rick, Shane initially takes the initiative and takes a leadership role in the group. As the plot progresses, he argues with Rick more and more; On the one hand, because they have different opinions about how the group should proceed, and on the other, because of frustration and displeasure with the situation around Lori and Carl. Shane is a hothead and for him only the survival of the most important people around him counts. He also believes that only the strongest survive and that there is no more room for pity or mercy in the new world. Therefore he is always ready to make drastic decisions for - in his opinion - the good of the group; a character development that can also be seen in Rick in the later seasons. Through his impulsive actions he gets further and further apart from the group and attracts their displeasure.

Only with Andrea does he have a kind of friendship and feels understood by her. In the penultimate episode of the second season, Rick kills him in self-defense. When he returns as a walker, he is finally killed by Carl. During the rescue of Maggie and Glenn at Woodbury, Rick believes he sees Shane and shoots him; however, this is a hallucination in which Rick instead shoots a Woodbury soldier.

Lori Grimes (Seasons 1-3)

Sarah Wayne Callies , starring in Lori Grimes

Lori is the mother of Carl and Judith and the wife of Rick. She believes Rick died in the zombie-infested hospital and escapes town with Carl and Shane. Lori and Shane then enter into a relationship, which - after Rick finds her and Carl again - is immediately ended by Lori. Since then, Lori has been suffering from a remorse and confesses the relationship to her husband, who shows understanding for her in view of the circumstances. The relationship with Rick, which had been burdened by frequent arguments before the disaster, solidifies again as the plot progresses. Lori often encourages her husband when his decisions are met with incomprehension within the group. However, she does not always agree with him and sometimes despairs of his persistence in some things. Lori continues to feel threatened by Shane's strong love for her and her son. In the second season she finds out that she is pregnant, but asserts that Rick is the father.

In the seventh season, Rick confirms in a conversation with Michonne that Judith is not his daughter, but Shane is the father. At the end of the second season, the love triangle between Lori, Rick and Shane is so acute that Rick - to protect his family - ultimately has to kill Shane. At the beginning of the third season, Rick blames Lori for killing Shane, which she realizes. She regrets what happened and tries to give Rick the time he needs to forgive her. When zombies invade the prison, the extra stress causes Lori to go into labor, complications arise in the delivery of her baby and Lori makes the decision to die for her baby; Carl is present at the emergency caesarean section and is forced to shoot her so that she is spared being a zombie. After her death, Rick sees her as a ghost several times due to a nervous breakdown .

Andrea (seasons 1–3, 10 )

Laurie Holden , actress as Andrea

Andrea is Amy's sister, twelve years older, who fell victim to the walkers during the first season. She used to work as a civil rights attorney. Over time, with Shane's help, she learns how to use firearms. Amy's death hit Andrea hard and it takes her a long time to come to terms with it. In the meantime, she even wants to take her own life because of it, which is prevented by Dale, who has developed fatherly feelings for her. Out of frustration, Andrea is now permanently annoyed by Dale's caring behavior and tutelage towards her, which she clearly gives him to understand. She is the only one in the group who shares Shane's view of things and encourages him in his actions. She befriends him and even suggests leaving the group together, which Shane refuses. Andrea has a strong personality, always gives her honest opinion and represents it confidently.

When the farm is overrun by zombies towards the end of the second season, she is separated from the others and struggles through the forest alone. She comes to the aid of the mysterious Michonne, with whom she joins forces. In the third season, Andrea and Michonne go to Woodbury, where the governor has taken over the reins. Her feelings for the district governor cloud her judgment of his actions and she can be blinded by him for a long time. After the Woodbury shootings, she briefly took on a leadership role. When Andrea finally realizes that the governor is threatening Rick's group, she gradually becomes aware of the nature of the governor. She tries to assassinate the governor according to a plan by Carol, but fails because her feelings prevent her. When Milton tells her that the governor wants to torture Michonne and kill everyone in Rick's group, she tries to escape to prison. She is intercepted by the governor and taken to the torture chamber actually intended for Michonne.

There the governor leaves her tied to a chair with the fatally wounded Milton, who after his transformation bites Andrea before she can free herself and redeem him. When the dying Andrea is found by Rick, Daryl and Michonne, Rick gives her a gun with which she shoots herself.

Dale Horvath (Seasons 1-2)

Jeffrey DeMunn , cast member of Dale Horvath

Dale is a 64 year old man who has no children and whose wife died of cancer before the zombie apocalypse. He develops fatherly feelings towards Andrea and her sister Amy. He drives the motorhome, from the roof of which a watch is often kept and which initially constitutes the group's main lounge. Dale is the rest of the group. Dale always tries to act calmly and deliberately and is careful not to let the mood in the group turn negative. This is noticeable by often seeking conversation when he sees problems. Because of this, Dale is usually one of the first to hear about news.

Also, despite the apocalypse, he still has high moral and ethical standards and tries to remain a good person despite everything. However, he is currently very skeptical about Shane and often sees him as a danger for the rest of the group, as he believes that Shane does not always have himself under control and would also go over corpses when in doubt. Dale also knows about Shane's jealousy of Rick. He increasingly gets into an argument with Shane and once openly tells him what he thinks of him. However, he is severely intimidated by Shane. Dale feels more for Andrea than she gets in return. At the end of the second season, Dale is fatally injured by a walker and then shot by Daryl.

Glenn Rhee (seasons 1–7, 10 )

Steven Yeun , cast member of Glenn Rhee

Glenn is a young American of Korean descent. Before the zombie apocalypse, he was a pizza delivery man in Atlanta, so he knows the city very well. That is why he acts voluntarily as a procurer of supplies for the group and prefers to go on forays alone, because then he only has to take care of himself. Glenn is the first of the group to come into contact with Rick. He saves Rick's life by giving him instructions over a radio to escape from a tank surrounded by zombies. Glenn has high moral standards and is always ready to take responsibility for himself and others. He repeatedly shows courage and loyalty to his friends and does not lose these principles over time. Glenn is often the voice of reason when it comes to protecting the group from the effects of ill-considered decisions.

On Hershel's farm, he falls in love with his daughter Maggie and the two get together very quickly. In prison he makes her a marriage proposal, which she accepts and the two see each other as a married couple from then on. When a deadly flu breaks out in prison, Glenn is also infected and barely survives the illness. During the final battle for the prison, the group is torn apart and Glenn is separated from Maggie. Together with Tara and Abraham Ford's group, Glenn searches for and finds Maggie again. In Alexandria he tries to integrate himself in the best possible way and is involved as a "runner" to look for supplies for the city in its vicinity. During a trip to a department store, he watched helplessly as Noah was torn to pieces by walkers because of the cowardice of the Alexandrian Nicholas. Glenn gets into a feud with Nicholas, who even tries to kill him. Instead of getting revenge, Glenn wants to help him become a better person. A little later, the two of them run away from the herd of walkers in a dead end and save themselves on a garbage can. Nicholas then shoots himself in front of Glenn's eyes and, if he falls, pulls him into the crowd. Glenn manages to hide under the container and return to Alexandria unharmed.

In season six, Glenn worries more than ever about pregnant Maggie and has to persuade her to stay out of potentially dangerous actions by the group. After Daryl goes in search of Dwight and his men in order to avenge Denise's murder, Glenn follows him with Rosita and Michonne. All four are captured by Negan's men, as did Rick, Abraham, Sasha, Carl, Eugene, Aaron and Maggie a little later. Abraham and Glenn are killed with Negan's baseball bat "Lucille".

Carl Grimes (Seasons 1-8, 10 )

Chandler Riggs , cast member for Carl Grimes

Carl is the son of Lori and Rick and is twelve years old at the beginning of the series. He looks up to his father very much and stands behind almost all of his decisions, even if they are criticized by the rest of the group. Carl also has a very good relationship with his mother. Since he does not notice the conflicts between Lori, Shane and Rick, he also sees Shane as an important confidante. Carl surprises his parents again and again with his - for the current situation - very sober and realistic view of things. In the fourth episode of the third season he has to shoot his bleeding mother to save her from being a zombie. Afterwards, Carl felt a temporary emotional cold; for example, he shoots a young Woodbury resident who wanted to surrender. Carl is emotionally completely numb, which means that Rick temporarily excludes him from the regular expeditions to the surrounding area and takes away his pistol. After their eviction from prison, the group is forcibly separated and Carl moves on with his father.

They later meet Michonne, with whom Carl builds a friendship and who becomes an important confidante for him. In the fourth and fifth seasons he rushes to help several people in need, where he is stopped by Rick once. In a conversation in church, he makes it clear to Rick that they are able to help other people. In Alexandria, Carl finds it difficult at first to fit into the halfway regained everyday life of a normal teenager (hanging out with friends, reading comics and playing video games). He accepts Alexandria as his new home, but is concerned that living there could weaken the group. Carl gets into a conflict with Jessie's son Ron: on the one hand because of his friendship with Ron's girlfriend Enid and on the other hand because Rick killed Ron's father Pete.

After Alexandria is overrun by walkers, Sam and Jessie are attacked and killed by the undead. Ron blames Rick and Carl for this and aims the gun at them. Michonne then stabs him from behind, causing a shot to go off and Carl loses an eye as a result. In the infirmary he receives emergency care from Denise and survives his injury. He and his father and other friends are captured by Negan's gang. In contrast to his father, he is not ready to submit to Negan completely and carries out an assassination attempt on Negan on his own, which, however, fails.

In season eight, Carl is bitten by a walker and eventually dies of his injury. In his final moments, he asks Rick not to kill all of the Saviors, but to live peacefully with them. Rick promises to grant him this wish before Carl finally shoots himself to avoid becoming the undead.

Daryl Dixon (Season 1-)

Norman Reedus , cast member of Daryl Dixon

Daryl is the younger brother of Merle, who was also part of the group for a short time. He is a survivor and good at tracking. Daryl kills the walkers with his crossbow, as it is quieter than conventional weapons and therefore does not attract any further attackers. In stark contrast, loud motorbikes are one of Daryl's favorite means of transport during the apocalypse. As a child, Daryl suffered a lot from the authoritarian upbringing style of his alcoholic father and felt abandoned by his older brother Merle, who was often not there for him because of various prison stays. Shaped by his difficult childhood, Daryl no longer cares much about other people as an adult and is mostly concerned with himself.

Life in the group changes him permanently and he is increasingly becoming a valuable member of the group. He develops friendly feelings towards Carol, who is very grateful to him for her doggedness in the search for her daughter Sophia. Both are always committed to each other in and outside the group. In the third season, Daryl has to release his brother Merle, who is shot in an unauthorized attempt to kill the governor, from his existence as a zombie. At the beginning of the fourth season, Daryl is on the survivors' council, which now makes the decisions for the group. When the governor storms the prison, Daryl and Beth are separated from the other group members. Together they move through the area and get to know each other better for the first time. After Beth's mysterious disappearance, Daryl inevitably joins a group of nefarious drifters. When they attack Rick, Carl and Michonne, Daryl helps Rick kill the men. After escaping from Terminus, Daryl and Carol go to find Beth in Atlanta. He is able to find her in a hospital and falls into a phase of depression after the failed rescue mission. Daryl initially refuses to conform in Alexandria. He eventually takes on the job of a scout at Aaron's side. Together they meet Morgan and take him to Alexandria.

In the sixth season, Daryl, Abraham and Sasha take over the task in Rick's plan to lure the walker herd away from the quarry, above all to lead the herd. So they manage to lure a large part of it far enough away from Alexandria. This leads to the first confrontations with Negan's men who finally stand in the way of the three on their way back to Alexandria and threaten them. Daryl kills the men with an RPG weapon and the group returns to Alexandria. Daryl proposes killing Negan's remaining men in exchange for Hilltop's supplies, which Maggie negotiates accordingly. Denise is killed by Negan's men and Eugene is seriously injured on an errand trip. Daryl blames himself for this because he left the shooter Dwight alive when they first met, who now turned out to be part of Negan's gang. He tries to find Dwight on his own to get revenge. Daryl and Glenn, Rosita and Michonne who follow him are captured and Daryl shot by Dwight. Thereupon Daryl is held captive by Negan and mentally tortured in order to recruit him. In the eighth episode of the seventh season, Daryl manages to escape from captivity together with "Jesus".

Carol Peletier (Season 1–)

Melissa McBride , starring in Carol Peletier

Carol is the mother of Sophia and the wife of Ed. Since their children are of a similar age, she spends time with Lori frequently and is also caring towards Carl. Due to her marriage to her patriarchal, violent macho husband, Carol is a very insecure and defensive person before and in the first weeks after the apocalypse, who is barely able to make his own decisions. After Ed fell victim to the walkers, she gradually gains in self-confidence. In the second season, her daughter disappears without a trace. During this time she gets closer to Daryl, who tries like no other from the group to find Sophia alive again. This is later found again in the barn of the Greene Farm among the walkers trapped in it and released from her existence by Rick. In season three, Carol is believed dead after the zombie attack, but is found alive by Daryl. After Lori's death, Carol and Beth take care of her newborn daughter Judith. In the third season she teaches the children of the community, which has now grown considerably. She promises the dying Ryan Samuels that she will take care of his daughters Lizzie and Mika as if they were their own.

During the quarantine, she kills Karen and David who are infected with the flu virus, whereupon she has to leave the group at Rick's request. After the prison was destroyed, Carol rescues Judith, Lizzie and Mika from walkers and meets Karen's friend Tyreese. A little later, Carol Tyreese confesses what she did to Karen and he forgives her. After Mika is murdered by her sister Lizzie, Carol finds herself forced to kill Lizzie in order to protect everyone involved. She moves on to Terminus with Tyreese and Judith, where she frees her friends from the clutches of the cannibals in a spectacular rescue operation. Afterwards she initially has problems getting back into the group. Together with Daryl she goes in search of Beth and is hit by officers from the Grady Memorial in their car. Thanks to Beth's commitment, she can be treated successfully in the hospital and eventually becomes part of Rick's group again as part of a prisoner exchange. Once in Alexandria, she sells herself as a good, harmless housewife, while she conspires with Rick and Daryl from behind and brings them into possession of weapons. She threatens Sam, who has seen her gun theft, and his father Pete.

When Alexandria is attacked by the wolves, she drops her cover for a short time, only to adopt a new one as a wolf and thus protect the place with all available means. After that, Carol felt a certain emotional instability. She begins under Morgan's influence by questioning her decisions about people who pose a threat to her and those around her. At the end of the season, Carol finds herself unable to continue killing potentially dangerous people and leaves Alexandria. After being forced to kill some of Negan's men again, one of the men who survived injured pursues her and tortures her with multiple shots in revenge. Morgan, who has also been able to track down Carol in the meantime, shoots the man to save her. Two men, who apparently belong to a previously unknown group, appear and offer their help.

Maggie Greene (Seasons 2-9, 10 )

Lauren Cohan , starring Maggie Greene

Maggie is the eldest daughter of Hershel, who starts a relationship with Glenn shortly after the group arrives. At first, she is emphatically independent and distant, but after a while she shows her feelings openly. Maggie has a strong personality with a rebellious streak and doesn't mince her words when something doesn't suit her. At the beginning she thinks just like Hershel that zombies can be cured, later she realizes that the mutated humans are lost. In the third season she has become an important member of the group and, along with Carol, is one of the only two women who help the men to protect the community from attacks by zombies and humans. She is forced to tell the governor about the prison after she and Glenn have been kidnapped and tortured. Both are saved by Rick. Glenn's marriage proposal is happily accepted by Maggie and the two see each other as a married couple from then on.

After the governor's attack on the prison, she moves on with Sasha and Bob in search of Glenn. Through Abraham, Rosita and Eugene, the two groups finally come together and arrive at Terminus a little later. After her rescue by Carol and a few days in Father Gabriel's Church, Maggie sets off for Washington with Glenn, Tara, Abraham, Rosita and Eugene. Meanwhile, Eugene confesses that he has no knowledge of any cure for the disease and they return to Rick's group. After losing her sister Beth as the only surviving blood relative, Maggie temporarily loses her courage to live. In Alexandria, she acts as the assistant to the leader Deanna, ear-witnessing Gabriel's betrayal of the group. Maggie tries to convince Deanna of the importance of Rick and his group for their survival and is committed to his stay in Alexandria. In the sixth season, it is learned that Maggie is pregnant. After Alexandria learns of the existence of another peaceful community (Hilltop), she travels there to negotiate a food barter with Hilltop's leader Gregory on Rick's behalf.

Gregory only agrees because Rick's group promises to rid Hilltop of the threat posed by Negan's gang. Together with Carol, Maggie is captured and kidnapped during the attack on one of Negan's accommodations. The two escape by killing their captors. A good friendship develops between Maggie and Aaron. So Aaron insists on driving her with Rick and the others to the Hilltop doctor when Maggie suddenly becomes seriously ill. On the way, the group is ambushed by Negan and taken prisoner.

Michonne (seasons 2–10)

Danai Gurira , actress of the Michonne

The swordsman Michonne appears at the end of season two when she saves Andrea's life and later teams up with her. She had a three year old son named Andre, who passed away at the beginning of the apocalypse. She blamed her then partner Mike and his friend Terry for this, who she kept on chains for months as a walker. Previously, she robbed the two zombies of the ability to harm them by chopping off their arms with her sword and removing their jaws. This made it virtually invisible to other zombies and was thus protected from their attacks. Michonne is skeptical of strangers and gets to the bottom of things before she gets involved with them. Together with Andrea she arrives in the Woodbury settlement, where the governor has taken over the management. Michonne instinctively senses that something is wrong with the settlement.

When she leaves Woodbury, she is pursued and shot by Merle on behalf of the governor. She witnesses Glenn and Maggie's kidnapping and goes to the prison to tell the people who live there. After Carl has spoken out in favor of her whereabouts, she begins to fit into Rick's group and is a well integrated member by the beginning of season four. Because of her fighting experience and honesty, Michonne is a valuable and valued member of the community. Michonne and Hershel are taken hostage by the governor when he tries to take over the prison again. She pierces the governor with her sword as he tries to strangle Rick, leaving Andreas and Hershel's murderers dying, with the prospect of transforming. After Terminus, Michonne convinces Rick to lead the group to Washington DC and later to follow Aaron to Alexandria. She is instrumental in ensuring that the group finds a new safe haven. There she is appointed Rick's auxiliary policeman.

In the sixth season, Rick's continued disdain for the residents of Alexandria encounters more and more incomprehension at Michonne, as she tries hard to integrate into the community and no longer makes any distinctions between her group and residents of Alexandria. She develops a good relationship with Deanna and, like them, hopes for a future for Alexandria. Michonne is deeply concerned about Deanna's fate after she is bitten and has to be left alone in Jessie's house. While trying to escape through the crowd of walkers, Jessie and Sam are attacked and mangled by strays. Ron, who blames Rick and Carl for this, then turns his gun on them. To stop Ron, Michonne stabs him from behind with her sword. Nevertheless, a shot is released from his weapon and pierces Carl's right eye. While Denise is treating him, Michonne supports Rick first in the fight against the remaining zombies. A little later, Rick and Michonne become a couple. Michonne and Glenn, Rosita and Daryl are captured by Negan's men.

Hershel Greene (Seasons 2-4, 9 )

Scott Wilson , cast member of Hershel Greene

Hershel is an old man who lives on his farm with his daughters and a few other people with whom he would like to be alone. However, when Carl is accidentally shot by a member of his group, Otis, Hershel saves his life through an emergency operation. As a veterinarian prior to the outbreak of the epidemic, Hershel is the first to be asked for help with medical questions. He initially has his own theory about the plague and believes that the zombies are not dead, only sick and can become normal people again with an appropriate cure. For this reason they are not killed by him, but rather captured and held in his barn. Shane's impressive demonstration of the irreversibility of the zombie existence of his mutated relatives brings the strictly religious Hershel back to his senses, but tempts the dry alcoholic briefly to start drinking again. At the end of the second season, Hershel's farm is overrun by a herd of walkers and the survivors of both groups have to flee together.

In the third season, Hershel is one of the few people whose advice and encouragement Rick relies on and includes in his decisions. Hershel, in turn, pays his respects to Rick by always being honest with him and discussing his own actions with him in advance. Rick also saves Hershel's life by amputating his lower leg in time after Hershel is bitten by a zombie. As a farmer, Hershel has important knowledge of animal husbandry and agriculture, which the group successfully does during their stay in prison. Hershel develops and confesses paternal feelings for Glenn. At the beginning of season four, Hershel is a member of the Council of Survivors who makes the decisions for the group. When the deadly flu broke out, Hershel actively helped to care for and heal the infected. He and Michonne are kidnapped by the governor and used as leverage to force Rick's group to leave prison. When Rick does not respond to the blackmail attempt of his opponent, Hershel is beheaded by the governor with Michonne's sword.

Merle Dixon (Seasons 1-3)

Michael Rooker , cast member of Merle Dixon

Daryl's older brother is a racist, violent, aggressive, drug addict and pays little attention to the opinion of others. Like Daryl, Merle was abused by his alcoholic father. At the first meeting, Merle comes into conflict with Rick and is left handcuffed by him on the roof of a high-rise building. He saws off his right hand and disappears without a trace. In the second season he appears to his brother Daryl as a hallucination after an accident. Daryl and Merle's relationship is not very cordial, even if the brothers are emotionally very close to each other. Merle says he did everything to make a man out of his brother and is the only one who cares about him. Daryl, however, feels that Merle was never there for him. In the third season he can be found in the Woodbury settlement, which is run by the governor.

There he is his right-hand man, but flees together with his brother Daryl when the governor portrays Merle as an agent of Rick's group and forces the brothers to fight each other to the death. After the escape, Merle does not manage to integrate into Rick's group. When he wants to hand Michonne over to the district governor, Merle confesses to her on the way to the meeting point with the district governor that he regrets the murders he committed on his behalf and lets Michonne go. Instead, he decides to try to kill the governor on his own. After Merle has first killed some of the governor's comrades-in-arms, Merle is shot in the upper body and found and redeemed by Daryl after his transformation into a zombie.

Philip "The Governor" Blake (Seasons 3-4, 5 )

David Morrissey , cast member of Philip Blake

The governor is the leader of a small settlement called Woodbury and the most dangerous antagonist yet for Rick and his group. His experiences and losses have turned him into a monster who externally maintains an almost hypocritical facade. As a matter of principle, he doesn't let anyone go from Woodbury and collects the cut heads of his victims in aquariums. For him, other survivors are only possible sources for necessary things, which he appropriates by force. He begins a relationship with Andrea, who initially has no idea of who he really is. In a fight with Michonne, she stabs his right eye and ends the zombie existence of his daughter Penny. As a result of these events, the governor becomes even more humane. After both betrayed him, he kills his once most important comrades-in-arms, Merle and Milton, deliberately not preventing their transformation. He takes revenge for Andrea's betrayal by first torturing her and then leaving her tied up with Milton, who is about to be transformed.

When a large part of his own army refuses to continue to risk their lives in the hunt for other people after a failed attack on the prison, the governor finally goes mad and shoots at everyone apart from the loyal soldiers Martinez and Shumpert, that he once wanted to protect. After Martinez and Shumpert leave the governor alone, the governor burns Woodbury to the ground and wanders the area for months without a destination. When he seems to have completely lost his will to live, he sees the girl Meghan through the window of a house. The governor hides his true identity from the girl's family and instead calls himself Brian Heriot. Brian develops fatherly feelings for Meghan and sleeps with Meghan's mother Lilly. When he meets Martinez with his new family, which also includes Lilly's sister Tara, in front of the ruins of Woodbury, he pretends to subordinate himself to Martinez in his new camp. After killing Martinez and his successor, he takes over the running of the camp and attacks the prison with Michonne and Hershel as hostages.

Because Rick does not accept his offer to leave the prison, the governor kills Hershel. When Lilly shows up in front of the prison with Meghan, who died of a bite, he prevents Meghan from being transformed and then tries, blind with anger, to destroy the prison. While trying to strangle Rick he is pierced by Michonne with her sword and left behind. A little later, Lilly shoots the dying governor with a hateful look in the head.

Beth Greene (Seasons 2-5)

Emily Kinney , actress in Beth Greene

Beth is Hershel's younger daughter and Maggie's little half-sister. It doesn't attract much attention until Shane and the others shoot the zombies in the barn. Since her mother was among them, Beth suffers a severe shock. She tries to kill herself, but realizes that she actually wants to go on living. She befriends Carl in the third season. Beth is very gentle and initially has neither combat experience nor the necessary handling of weapons to be able to defend herself from the dangers of the apocalyptic world. Still, she survived the zombie attack on Greene Farm at the end of season two. Life in Rick's group gradually hardens Beth and she becomes a well integrated member. After Lori's death, she is the one who mainly takes care of their newborn daughter Judith. She is also involved in killing strays on prison fences and learning how to use firearms. Over time, Beth also felt a certain emotional numbness when she received the news of the death of her new friend Zack in an extremely relaxed manner.

In the fourth season, she has to watch helplessly as the governor kills her father. After the prison is destroyed, she escapes with Daryl and becomes friends with him after initial arguments. One night, Beth is kidnapped by strangers in a black car on a street. In the course of the fifth season it is revealed that she is being held in the Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and is forced to work as a nurse there. Some former police officers and a doctor have built accommodation there, which holds together well, but is strained by the strains of the leader, Dawn. Beth befriends Noah, who is about the same age. When they try to escape together, only Noah manages to escape. Shortly afterwards he runs into Daryl and Carol, through which the two find out Beth's whereabouts. Beth and Carol, who was later also caught there, are to be brought back in as part of a prisoner exchange with Rick's group. When Dawn then demands of Noah to rejoin her group against his will, Beth attacks her with a pair of scissors. A shot from Dawn's weapon accidentally goes off and fatally wounds Beth. Thereupon Dawn is shot by Daryl in revenge.

Tyreese "Ty" Williams (seasons 3–5)

Chad Coleman , cast member for Tyreese Williams

Tyreese arrives at the prison as the leader of a group of five, including his sister Sasha. He has high moral values that he always tries to adhere to. Although he is a good close fighter and inevitably kills zombies, he abhors violence and is tired of the constant struggle for survival. After Tyreese's group is rescued by Carl and initially isolated from the Atlanta survivors, Tyreese prevents Allen and his son Ben from attempting to take control of the prison by force while Rick, Daryl, Glenn and Maggie are away. After his group is driven out of prison by Rick who is no longer sane because of his hallucinations, Tyreese and his men reach Woodbury and tell the governor about his stay in prison. Because Andrea warns him about her attempt to escape from the governor, Tyreese begins to become suspicious of the self-appointed head of Woodbury.

He refuses to participate in the governor's planned mass murder of Rick's group in prison and instead stays behind in Woodbury to protect the survivors who remain there. When Karen Tyreese reports on how the governor shot his own soldiers, he and everyone else from Woodbury join Rick. After his girlfriend Karen is murdered, he gets into an argument with Rick. In the search for drugs for those infected with the flu, he is unstable and endangers the group several times. When the prison is attacked again by the governor and overrun by zombies, the girls Mika and Lizzie save him from attackers. He then struggles through the woods alone with a baby and Lizzie and Mika until Carol finds him and accompanies him from now on. On her journey, Carol finds herself forced to kill Lizzie for the good of the group after the girl murdered her own sister. Tyreese sees this, but can no longer get over this experience.

When asked how his way with Carol was for him, he replies that it was his death. In the middle of the fifth season he is bitten on the arm by a zombie. While Noah gets help, Tyreese suffers a nervous breakdown and hallucinates: Among other things, he talks to Bob, Beth and the governor in his madness. Rick, Michonne and Glenn come to the rescue and chop off his arm. However, Tyreese dies as a result of his injuries and is buried at the end of the episode.

Sasha Williams (seasons 3–7, 9, 10 )

Sonequa Martin-Green , starring Sasha Williams

Sasha is Tyreese's sister. In contrast to her brother, she is a good shooter and does not want to take risks as readily as Tyreese to help others and therefore also leave the bitten Donna belonging to her group in front of the prison. Nevertheless, she usually joins her brother's decisions and also has an influence on Tyreese. Like her brother, she refuses to participate in the Woodbury Army's attack on the prison and joins Rick after the governor's mass murder of his own people. When she also contracted the deadly flu, she had to be quarantined, but there she was able to help Hershel with the treatment of the other sick people. She begins a relationship with Bob Stookey at the beginning of the fifth season. At the end of season five, she can't cope with her life anymore and fears going crazy after her boyfriend Bob and brother Tyreese die.

In Alexandria she insists on occupying the watchtower as often as possible. Otherwise she shows no effort to integrate into the community and distances herself from the rest of Rick's group. She buries the walkers she has killed alone in the forest and refuses any help from her friends who are concerned about their state of mind. At the welcome party for Rick's group in Alexandria, Sasha freaks out over a neighbor whose only worry seems to be choosing the right dish that she will soon cook for Sasha as a welcome greeting. She finally turns to Father Gabriel for help, who refuses to help her and provokes her so violently that she almost shoots him. Maggie intervenes in time and brings Sasha back to her senses. In the sixth season Sasha seems to have recovered mentally and successfully leads the first part of the walker herd away from Alexandria together with Abraham and Daryl. After a wild chase with hostile strangers, Abraham and Sasha, separated from Daryl, have to look for a hiding place where they can stay for a night. Abraham, who was actually in a relationship with Rosita, flirts openly with Sasha.

In addition, Abraham suggests to Sasha not to return to Alexandria, but to start over with two people. The next day, Daryl picks them up in a truck from their hiding place and the three of them return to Alexandria unscathed after having had an argument with some of Negan's people. After Abraham separates from Rosita, he and Sasha become a couple and even plan to start a family. They both accompany Rick and the others to Hilltop when Maggie falls ill, falling into Negan's trap.

Bob Stookey (Seasons 4-5)

Lawrence Gilliard Jr. , who played Bob Stookey

Bob joined the group after the events in Woodbury. In a flashback one learns that he was part of several groups before, but none of them survived. As a result, he wandered around aimlessly and listlessly for a while. He himself says that he didn't know exactly how long it went before he was picked up by Glenn and Daryl and integrated into the group. Bob's biggest weakness is his alcohol problem, which he kept a secret from the group for a long time. He repeatedly joins supply missions in the hopes of finding alcohol, and in doing so he puts the lives of other group members at risk. When Daryl finds out that Bob took the risks for alcohol, he confronts him. Bob is remorseful and loathes his own behavior. In the following years, Bob shows his positive side as an open-minded and calm person with a lot of optimism. In this way he makes a significant contribution to the fact that Maggie, Sasha and himself do not give up their difficult journey to Terminus.

Over time, he begins a relationship with Sasha. After the events in Terminus, Bob is captured at night outside the church by Gareth and the other survivors from Terminus. These openly show for the first time that they practice cannibalism: Bob's lower leg and foot are grilled and eaten by the survivors in front of his eyes. But Gareth reveals that he was bitten by a walker and infected shortly before his capture, whereupon the cannibals bring Bob back to his group. In revenge, Gareth and his friends are lured into a trap and cruelly slain by Rick, Michonne, Sasha and Abraham. Bob eventually dies in church with his friends. Instead of Sasha, Tyreese takes on the task of stabbing Bob in the head with a knife to prevent his resurrection as a walker.

Abraham Ford (Seasons 4-7, 10 )

Michael Cudlitz , cast member of Abraham Ford

Abraham Ford was a sergeant in the US Army. When he tries to protect his family and kills people who threaten them, his wife becomes afraid of him and flees with the children. When he finds her dead the following day, he wants to shoot himself and is stopped by Eugene. Eugene pretends to be a scientist with knowledge of a cure for the disease and asks for help. Abraham later meets Glenn and Tara with Rosita and Eugene on their way to Washington DC. He can be persuaded to help Glenn find Maggie. After fleeing Terminus, Abraham urges Rick and his group to make their way back to Washington DC to take Eugene there so that he could save the world. Tara, Maggie and Glenn join him and Rosita. When the bus, sabotaged by Eugene, breaks down after a short distance, the group finds a roadworthy fire engine with which they continue their journey. They come to the edge of an area overrun by walkers, through which Abraham wants to fight his way. When the others refuse, he grabs Eugene, who finally admits in fear that his story was only spun by him to convince others to protect him from the zombies. Abraham then breaks down and takes a while to process the matter. After returning to Rick's group, he also arrives in Alexandria.

There he is involved in the maintenance and expansion of the fence surrounding Alexandria. While getting the necessary building materials, the construction workers are attacked by a herd of zombies. While the others retreat and want to leave a colleague to her fate, Abraham saves the life of the woman surrounded by walkers and continues to fight the bloodthirsty attackers. Deeply impressed by his commitment, Abraham is supported by the others and later praised to Deanna in the highest tones. The current site manager Tobin is even ceding his job to Abraham as he thinks he is the better choice for the post. Together with Sasha and Daryl, Abraham successfully leads the first part of the herd of walkers from the quarry away from Alexandria. The next day, Daryl picks them up from their hiding place in a truck.

Back in Alexandria, Abraham decides to part with Rosita. He then enters into a relationship with Sasha and plans to start a family with her. While the group is driving Maggie to Hilltop, she runs into Negan's men several times, which prevents her from continuing. When they try to get on foot at night, they are surrounded by Negan's gang and have to surrender. Negan kills Abraham and Glenn with his "Lucille" baseball bat.

Eugene Porter (season 4–)

Josh McDermitt , cast member of Eugene Porter

The character of Eugene is introduced in season four as a cowardly, alleged scientist who claims to know the solution to the apocalypse. Since its inception, he has been able to convince other survivors to help him get to Washington DC, where a government research unit in operation is said to be waiting for his arrival to work with him to complete an antidote to the disease. His claims later prove to be a lie. As a result, Eugene is complicit in the deaths of many people who, believing in this way to save the world from destruction, kept him alive and died for his mission. When Glenn and Tara meet his group, only he, Abraham and Rosita are alive. In order to prolong the onward journey to Washington, Eugene regularly sabotages her onward journey, either by provoking car breakdowns, allegedly misread maps or by persuading the group to help other people, as happened with Glenn and Tara in search of Maggie .

Despite his eccentric and eccentric nature, Eugene is highly intelligent and is a great asset, especially in Alexandria. He takes care of the technical facilities of the place and develops solutions that benefit the community. In addition, Eugene gains courage and begins to gain experience in self-defense. He saves Tara, Glenn and Nicholas lives on an errands trip that went wrong, and over time he earns back Abraham's trust and respect, which he had lost since he admitted his lie in season five. Eugene is taken hostage by Dwight on a trip with Abraham in the course of which the two quarrel and split up. He later helps Rosita, Daryl and Abraham put Dwight and his friends on the run. Eugene is hit by a shot. He still accompanies Maggie's ambulance to Hilltop and is also captured by Negan.

Rosita Espinosa (Season 4–)

Christian Serratos , actress of Rosita Espinosa

Rosita appears together with Abraham and Eugene in the fourth season. Nothing is known about their pre-apocalypse life. She is in a relationship with Abraham and accompanies him on his mission to bring Eugene, who pretends to know the solution to the apocalypse, to Washington DC. They meet Tara and Glenn and initially take both of them with their car. When Glenn insists on keeping looking for Maggie, Rosita, Abraham, and Eugene decide to help him out. After Eugene admits to have lied, the group around Abraham gives up their goal completely and joins Rick. Abraham then remains Rosita's most important caregiver. Rosita is well versed in handling various weapons and knows how to defend herself, both verbally and physically. So she too represents a valuable addition to Rick's group. Even if she has integrated well, interactions with other members are rarely observed. In the sixth season, she seems to have befriended Tara. After a few months in Alexandria, Rosita's relationship with Abraham fails, which she suffers greatly.

In the community she acts as a guard at the wall and also helps in the infirmary. She teaches the inexperienced members of the community in gun handling and self-defense. Rosita is asked by the doctor Denise to accompany her on an errands trip and Rosita persuades Daryl to come with her. With her repeated reckless behavior, Denise causes displeasure among her companions and finally causes an argument on the way back. This is interrupted by the sudden appearance of Negan's men and Denise shot by Dwight with an arrow from Daryl's stolen crossbow. An exchange of fire ensues in which Dwight and his men can be repulsed. Later, Daryl sets out alone to avenge Denise, and Rosita follows him with Glenn and Michonne. All four are captured and brought to Negan, who in the meantime has several other residents of Alexandria under his control.

Tara Chambler (Seasons 4-9)

Alanna Masterson , starring the Tara Chambler

Tara is Lilly's sister and Meghan's aunt. She has no inkling of the real nature of the governor and therefore trusts him. Tara begins a relationship with the soldier Alisha in Martinez's camp. When she realizes that the governor lied in claiming that there were bad people in the prison and watches the governor behead Hershel, she refuses to participate in the prison attack. After Alisha is shot by Lizzie and Lilly is surrounded by walkers, Tara hides in prison. She is found by Glenn and persuaded to come with him. In compensation for being on the wrong side, Tara swears to help Glenn find his wife, Maggie. After she rescues Glenn, who has fainted from the aftermath of his flu, the two are picked up by Abraham Ford's group on their way to Washington, DC. When Glenn comes to, he insists on looking for Maggie and Tara, and finally Abraham's team, join him.

After the Atlanta survivors reunite, Tara worries about how they will react to their presence. To her great relief, no one takes things seriously and she is welcome in the group. In addition to Glenn, Tara also makes good friends with Maggie, Rosita and later Noah. After her arrival in Alexandria she is part of the team of runners who take care of all kinds of goods. Tara suffers a serious head injury during a foray into a department store. In Alexandria she can be successfully treated by Pete and is recovering. After Pete's death, she meets the doctor Denise Cloyd, with whom she begins a relationship. She clashes with Rick, who disciplines her for risking her life to save Deanna's son Spencer. Rick later apologizes to her for this. When the city is overrun by walkers, Tara and Rosita and Eugene take refuge in the garage of the same house in which Morgan and Carol have taken shelter. They later help Rick fight the walkers. Immediately after her group's attack on one of Negan's accommodations, Tara goes on an errands trip with Heath, both of which have not yet returned at the end of the season. While she is away, Denise is killed by Dwight.

Gareth (Seasons 4-5)

Andrew J. West , cast member of Gareth

Gareth is the leader of Terminus, a former freight yard. He and his people have set up signposts to Terminus in the past to provide refuge for other survivors. But the well-intentioned hospitality was taken advantage of. Groups of men came who disempowered, raped, murdered and tortured the Terminus residents. From that moment on, Gareth knew that he would go over dead bodies for his people: either you are the butcher or the slaughter cattle. So the inhabitants of Terminus became cannibals and now kill all people who arrive in Terminus and who do not want to get involved in this way of life. After Rick and his people arrive in Terminus, they are captured for slaughter. Carol, who is not one of the prisoners, frees the group and escapes with them. As a result, Terminus is overrun by a herd of zombies. Gareth is one of the few residents who can escape.

He wants to take revenge and, together with his remaining loyal followers, Rick's group to a church in which they have found refuge. Believing that they have separated Rick's group by a trick, Gareth and his friends fall into their trap. They are brutally beaten to death in the church by Rick and his people.

Father Gabriel Stokes (Season 5–)

Seth Gilliam , starring Father Gabriel Stokes

Rick's group meets Father Gabriel in season five when he, surrounded by zombies, calls for help. He has lived alone in his church since the beginning of the Apocalypse, feeding on donated food. Father Gabriel's unsafe behavior makes himself more and more suspicious. When he leaves the church, he never carries weapons with him and only hopes for divine help. Foolishly, he survived that way for a long time. But he also has a terrible secret: cornered by the suspicious Rick, the man plagued by a strong remorse confesses that he hadn't let his community in at the beginning of the apocalypse when they were followed by zombies for fear of the biters had sought refuge in him. Rick's group stays in the church for a few days, where they are safe for the time being and get new food supplies. Gabriel's emotional instability worsens over time, especially after he has to witness the sometimes cruel actions of Rick and his people up close, which, however, have to be committed to protect the group. The sometimes rough manners of some group members towards the psychologically badly damaged Gabriel also contribute to the fact that he can hardly integrate into the group. After the church is overrun by walkers and Gabriel moves on with Rick's group, he too arrives in Alexandria.

There he seems to have gone mad and finally betrays Rick's group: He claims to Deanna that Rick and his people are evil and pose a threat to the community. In a later argument between Gabriel and Sasha, she turns her gun on him, but is stopped by Maggie. Afterwards, Gabriel seems to have accepted the reality of the new, brutal world he now lives in, as well as Rick's way of doing things in it. He tries to repent by always showing his willingness to help and cooperate, even if this is initially rejected, especially by Rick. He asks Carl again to teach him how to handle weapons, as he now feels ready for it. When the city is attacked by the wolves, Morgan saves his life. After the walkers get to Alexandria, Gabriel belongs to Rick's group, who have to leave Jessie's house disguised as zombies. Gabriel previously announced to Rick that he would not let anything stop him. When they have to change their original plan, Gabriel offers Rick to bring Judith to safety, and Rick, after a moment's hesitation, trusts him with his daughter. Gabriel keeps his promise and fits into the group better and better as the season progresses.

Morgan Jones (Seasons 1, 3, 5-8)

Lennie James , starring in Morgan Jones

Morgan Jones is the only person alive, besides his son Duane, whom Rick finds in his hometown of King County after waking up from a coma. Morgan tells Rick how the world has changed and shows him how to deal with the zombies. After Morgan refuses Rick's offer to follow him to Atlanta, his undead wife bites his son. When Rick returns to his homeland after two years to get guns, Morgan has gone mad and sets traps all over King County for the zombies that he empties every day. He only comes to his senses again when Rick reminds him of the walkie-talkie they wanted to communicate with. This failed at the time because the bandwidth of the radio was insufficient. Morgan believed he had been abandoned by Rick, which it had not. Rick tried several times in vain to contact Morgan by radio and kept giving him instructions through signs and other hints as to where to find him. However, Morgan does not want to follow Rick in what he sees as a hopeless battle for prison. After the group escaped from Terminus, Rick defaced one of the signs that took him there and reads No Sanctuary .

A short time later you can see Morgan looking at the sign. In the middle of the fifth season Morgan arrives at Father Gabriel's abandoned church and finds Abraham's message to Rick with a reference to Washington. At the end of the season he arrives in Alexandria with Daryl and Aaron. In the sixth season, the viewer learns what happened to Morgan between the third and fifth seasons. He leaves King County shortly after his last meeting with Rick King, initially wandering aimlessly through the country and killing everything and everyone he comes across as if in a frenzy. He meets the former forensic psychiatrist Eastman, who initially holds him prisoner in a cell in his forest hut for self-protection and treats him. Eastman brings Morgan back to his senses and regains his will to live. Eastman conveys his philosophy to Morgan that every life is valuable, every person can change and therefore must not be killed. He also teaches him aikido . After Eastman dies from a zombie bite, Morgan moves on in search of Rick. In Alexandria he tries to recognize Rick as the man he originally met, but is sometimes indignant about his dealings with his fellow men. After Morgan lets five wolves escape unscathed from Alexandria and they later ambush Rick to kill him, Morgan is confronted.

He claims to have tried to reconsider his attitude towards killing but does not want to succeed. He conceals the capture of a wolf, apparently with the intention of treating him - like Eastman once again - to become a good person, although the wolf continues to threaten to kill him and his fellow men. Morgan puts the doctor Denise in danger when he has her tended to a bad wolf wound. After Carol finds out about him and tries to kill the wolf, Morgan knocks her out. Thereby he offers the wolf the opportunity to take Denise hostage, to disarm Tara, Eugene and Rosita and to flee together with Denise. That Morgan should not be completely wrong with his approach is later shown in the fact that the wolf sacrifices himself to the walkers for Denise. Morgan exerts a strong influence on Carol, so that she too soon finds herself unable to kill potentially dangerous people. When she turns her back on Alexandria, Morgan follows her and, contrary to his beliefs, kills a man to save her. Two unknown men offer their help to Morgan and the multiple shot Carol, who Morgan accepts. Tomorrow, the seriously injured Carol will be brought to the kingdom, where he will integrate well. He unsuccessfully tries to persuade Carol, who does not take the community seriously, to stay. Tomorrow befriends King Ezekiel, the leader of the community, and is privy to the secret deal with the Saviors. Over the course of the season, he met young Benjamin, for whom he developed fatherly feelings. He meets his former group again when they are looking for allies in the kingdom and learns of the murder of Glenn and Abraham and of the current conditions in Alexandria. After an argument with Daryl, who harshly criticizes his pacifist worldview, he is taken to another meeting with the Saviors. Due to a lack of vegetables, Benjamin is shot in the leg. The rescue attempts fail and he bleeds to death. This loss triggers a state of delusion in Morgan similar to that of his son's death. He learns that Richard, a soldier of the kingdom, has hidden the vegetables to start a war between the two communities. Tomorrow, strangle him at the next meeting with the Saviors. Then he wants to take revenge on the Saviors. Carol and Ezekiel then meet him and persuade him to come to Alexandria. There he fights on the side of his friends and no longer has a problem killing people.

Jessie Anderson (season 6)

Alexandra Breckenridge , starring Jessie Anderson

Jessie is the wife of Pete and the mother of Ron and Sam, with whom she has lived in Alexandria for an indefinite period. In the settlement, she works as a hairdresser and cuts Rick's hair on his first day in Alexandria. Her son Ron becomes one of Carl's new friends. Jessie is very kind and sensitive to Rick, which goes against the grain of her husband Pete. Through Carol, Rick finds out that Jessie is being hit by Pete. Thereupon he campaigns with Deanna for the couple to be separated, but this forbids him any interference. Rick, who seems to have developed feelings for Jessie, fights publicly with Pete and thus achieves on the one hand that he is separated from Jessie, on the other hand that his own whereabouts in Alexandria are questioned by Deanna. On Deanna's orders, Rick shoots Pete after he killed Deanna's husband Reg.

After her husband dies, Jessie realizes that she has to take care of her own safety. She asks Rosita to teach her to shoot. When the wolves attack Alexandria, Jessie outgrows herself and kills one of the adversaries to protect herself and her children. She then bluntly urges her fellow citizens to face reality and fight for their own survival, otherwise they would die. Jessie takes care of Judith when Carol or Carl are otherwise busy. Rick's daughter is in Jessie's house at the time when Alexandria is overrun by walkers. After she has shot the way to her house, among others Rick, Michonne and Deanna, the survivors hide in it until a fight between Jessie's son Ron and Carl Beisser are lured and penetrate the house. Disguised as zombies, the group, including their severely traumatized son Sam, leaves the house through the crowd. Sam begins to call for Jessie and puts the group in mortal danger. After he suffers a panic attack due to the many walkers and is bitten as a result, Jessie begins to scream, which kills her herself by the walkers.

Aaron (season 5–)

Ross Marquand , cast member of Aaron

Aaron is a citizen of Alexandria and is looking for new, suitable members for the community together with his partner Eric on behalf of Deanna. To this end, the couple travel to the land devastated by the apocalypse in search of survivors. When they do come across any, Aaron and Eric first observe and eavesdrop on the strangers from a distance to determine if they are suitable for admission to Alexandria. Aaron is the first Alexandrian to contact Rick's group and bring them to Alexandria. Unlike most of the residents of Alexandria, Aaron knows how to defend himself against the dangers of the apocalyptic world. He also has a good knowledge of people and rhetoric, which is why he was selected for the job of recruiter for Alexandria. As a homosexual couple, Aaron and Eric feel marginalized by the homophobic citizens of Alexandria, which is why their job as recruits comes in handy as they are rarely in town. Aaron befriends Daryl because of the shared feeling of being an outsider.

He can convince Daryl to accompany him on his tours in the future so that Eric no longer has to expose him to the danger. They fall into a trap of the wolves and are saved by Morgan. Aaron loses his backpack, which contains information about Alexandria and is later found by the wolves. Aaron and Daryl take Morgan to Alexandria. In season six, Aaron feels guilty about the attack by the wolves on the community, in which many of his fellow citizens die brutally and in agony. He helps Maggie in her grief for Glenn, who was believed dead when he does not return after Rick's failed plan to lure a huge herd of walkers away from Alexandria. After Maggie suddenly falls ill, Aaron insists on escorting her ambulance, which consists of Rick, Carl, Abraham, Sasha and Eugene, to the doctor in Hilltop. The group is ambushed by Negan's men and is eventually forced to surrender.

Spencer Monroe (Seasons 5-7)

Austin Nichols , who played Spencer Monroe

Spencer Monroe is the son of Deanna and Reg Monroe and the brother of Aiden Monroe. After he lost his brother, his family mourned Aiden's death. His father Reg Monroe was also killed by Pete Andersson. When the wolves attacked and a dolly was honked, many walkers were attracted. Many Alexandria people were killed, but also many panicked and wanted to escape and went to Olivia (she is the person who stores all the food) to steal food and did not listen to Deanna. Spencer came along a little later and was able to make sure that everyone put all the groceries back, but the real reason when he was drunk at his mother's house was that he wanted to steal food alone and unnoticed, which was what he and Deanna argued about. When the zombie herd came into Alexandria, Spencer's mother was killed. Two weeks later after the event, he always went out alone and secretly to look for his mother, who is now a zombie, and to redeem, which he succeeds.

After Abraham and Rosita were no longer together, Spencer flirted with Rosita, and she invited him to her home. Spencer did not go with the attacks on the Saviors, even when Maggie suddenly fell ill and some wanted to bring her to Hilltop, Spencer did not go, but Rosita did. And Rosita and the others were captured by the Saviors and one of eleven candidates was killed by Negan with his "Lucille" baseball bat. Which ended up being two. In season 7, Spencer slowly became an antagonist and had always been more against Rick Grimes. The second time Negan came to visit, Spencer wanted Negan to kill Rick for him because Spencer blames Rick for his family's death and guilt. However, Spencer's plan did not work because Negan stabbed Spencer in the stomach with a knife and slit open, which resulted in the intestines coming out and Spencer also died from it. The reason Negan killed was because he disliked "traitors". After leaving Negan, Spencer became a walker after his death, but was then redeemed by Rick.

Deanna Monroe (Seasons 5-6)

Tovah Feldshuh, actress in Deanna Monroe

Deanna, her husband Reg and their two sons are the founders of Alexandria who were evacuated to the area at the beginning of the Apocalypse. In cooperation with other survivors, the meter-high steel wall was drawn around the place, which made it safe for a long time. The settlement was previously built as part of an environmental project for rich families and has its own electricity and water supply from renewable resources. The construction materials for the fence come from the construction site of an unfinished shopping center nearby. Before the Apocalypse, Deanna was a MP in the state of Ohio. As the leader of Alexandria, she cultivates a rather democratic, but from the point of view of Rick's group, reckless leadership style when it comes to dealing with outsiders. Deanna doesn't think it necessary to have the wall guarded around the clock and regularly has Aaron and Eric bring new people to Alexandria, which Rick considers to be extremely negligent. In order to promote cohesion among the residents and a reasonably normal everyday life, Deanna assigns them to tasks in the community, which they have to fulfill on a daily basis, partly according to their wishes.

Deanna is initially enthusiastic about the performance of Rick's group, having survived so long outside, and assigns several of them important posts in Alexandria. The death of her son Aiden, Rick's repeated calls for more rigorous leadership, and Gabriel's betrayal of Rick, cast doubt on her decision to have included Rick's group. However, after Pete kills her husband Reg as a result of the conflict with Rick, Deanna calls on Rick to shoot him. Rick had previously tried unsuccessfully to convince her to kill Pete preventively as a last resort, but Deanna strictly refused to do so for moral reasons. Since then, she has doubts about herself and her leadership skills, and hands Rick control of Alexandria. After her husband dies, Deanna shows symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Maggie tries to stand up by keeping her busy with new plans for Alexandria. So the two plan the agriculture to supply the residents with fresh food in the future. When Alexandria is attacked by the wolves, Deanna, guarded by her son Spencer, hides in the driver's cab of a truck. Soon after, Deanna regained confidence and was busy planning an extension of the Alexandria border fence. In Michonne she finds, besides Maggie, another confidante and advocate.

When Alexandria is overrun by the herd, Deanna is badly injured and bitten. Later she has to be left alone in Jessie's house after Rick's group is forced to flee from invading walkers. Michonne offers Deanna when she says goodbye to redeem her, but Deanna is not yet ready for it. She shoots the walkers running towards her with the revolver with which she planned to shoot herself. Later she is found transformed by Carl in the forest, and redeemed and buried by Spencer.

Negan (season 6–)

Jeffrey Dean Morgan , cast member of the Negan

Negan is the leader of the Saviors . He appears for the first time in the last episode of the sixth season. After Rick's people kill many of his men, Negan has a part of Rick's group captured by his men as they are on their way to Hilltop. To demonstrate his power, he kills Abraham with his "Lucille" baseball bat, which is wrapped with barbed wire. When Daryl tries to attack him, he kills Glenn in front of the others as punishment. He has Daryl brought to his hideout to ensure Rick's loyalty. He also wants Daryl to work for him immediately. When Carl smuggled into the shelter with the help of a truck and wanted to kill Negan, he was impressed by his courage. He brings Carl back to Alexandria, where he intimidates the residents with his presence. He presents himself unusually social by preparing food with Carl and engaging with Judith while he waits for Rick to return.

Negan asks Spencer to play pool with him on the street and talks to him as the game progresses. Spencer blames Rick for the death of his family and asks Negan to kill Rick for him. However, Negan doesn't like the way Spencer picks up on him and stabs him with a knife in the stomach, causing him to die. With presence of mind, Rosita shoots Negan, but only hits his baseball bat. Since the residents of Alexandria had been asked some time before to hand over all weapons to the Saviors, Negan wanted to know where the bullet came from, with which Rosita had just tried to kill him. She lies and asserts that she made the ball. Negan doesn't believe what she says and has Olivia shot. In the meantime, Rick has returned to Alexandria and orders Negan to leave the city. However, this requires to know who made the sphere. Eugene then reveals himself. Negan and his men leave Alexandria, but take Eugene with them.

Back in his hideout, he learns that Joseph was murdered and that Daryl and Sherry have disappeared. Negan suspects Dwight to be involved in the disappearance of the two. The latter can curb the distrust of him by going out to look for Sherry and Daryl. When Dwight returns, he claims Sherry is dead. He also accuses the Saviors doctor, Emmet Carson, Daryl and Sherry of helping them escape. Negan has this burned alive. In order to be able to guarantee continued medical care, he has Hilltop's doctor, Harlan Carson, fetch Emmet's brother.

Some time later, Sascha and Rosita make their way to the Saviors to carry out an attack on Negan and to free Eugene. Sascha is captured, Rosita is able to flee. Negan sets off with Sascha, who is being transported in a coffin, on the way to Alexandria after learning of Rick's war plans against him. Sascha takes his own life while driving. Your goal is to kill Negan as a walker when he opens the coffin. When Negan and the Saviors arrive in Alexandria, Negan opens the coffin and the undead Sascha tries to attack him, but he can react in time and avoid her before he is bitten by her. Rick orders Rosita to blow up the Saviors with previously deposited explosives. However, the Scavengers, Rick's alleged allies, have defused this beforehand because, against Rick's knowledge, they negotiated an alliance with Negan.

A great shootout breaks out in which the people of Alexandria are assisted by some soldiers from the kingdom and Hilltop. Negan and his men manage to circle Rick and Carl. Before Negan gets the chance to kill Carl in front of Rick's eyes, Ezekiel lets his tiger Shiva loose on the Saviors, who then flee. He orders his men to prepare for war.

Alpha (Seasons 9-10)

Samantha Morton , starring in Alpha

Alpha is the leader of the Whisperers and proves to be an intelligent, cold-feeling, psychopathic, sadistic, sly and self-indulgent woman who is a hardened, determined survivor and a strong leader for the people in her group. At the beginning of the Apocalypse, she brutally murdered her own husband in front of her young daughter after he refused to abandon fellow survivors after a walker attack. She pursues her own ideology and rarely leaves people who do not submit to her spared.

After a while, Alpha, her daughter Lydia and Beta founded the group of Whisperers. These are characterized by wearing a zombie mask and by wandering around and building up a herd of walkers. Later, when her daughter Lydia joined Alexandria, she swore revenge and infiltrated Alexandria as a "resident". Later that same night, several Alexandria residents, Tara, Enid and Henry, kidnapped and murdered and created a line between the militia and the whisperers through their zombie-infected heads.

Carol later swore revenge for her adoptive son Henry and commissioned Negan to infiltrate the Whisperers and kill Alpha. After entering into a "relationship" with Alpha, he managed to gain Alpha's trust. He later finally murdered Alpha, brought her severed head to Carol, and she stuck it on a stick just like she did with Henry.

Her sister Andrea feels responsible for her death as she vowed to protect Amy.

Sophia Peletier

Madison Lintz , actress of Sophia Peletier

Sophia is the daughter of Carol and Ed. She was previously abused by her father Ed and is rather calm and shy, but makes friends with Carl. All members of the team then search for her without success, until they finally find her locked up in a barn on Hershel's farm together with other zombies, and Rick releases her from her existence.

Ed Peletier

Ed is Sophia's father and Carol's husband. In the past, Ed often hit and insulted his wife. He completely dominated their actions, plus he's a selfish brute. However, he only dares to be violent towards the weaker. Ed is beaten almost to death by Shane in season one for getting violent on his wife. After this event, he retires to his tent. There he is attacked and killed by several zombies.

Otis

Otis is Hershel's neighbor and fled to Hershel's farm with his wife Patricia when the epidemic broke out. He is a hunter and "zombie-catching expert" - he is the one who, at Hershel's behest, catches zombies that come too close to the farm and locks them in his barn. He accidentally shoots Carl and then takes Shane to the nearby high school to get medical supplies. While escaping from walkers, Shane shoots him in the leg with his last bullet to distract the zombies with Otis as an easy victim and escape unscathed. Otis' wife Patricia is killed at the end of season two when Hershel's farm is overrun by walkers.

Dr. Edwin Jenner

Noah Emmerich , actor of the Dr. Edwin Jenner

Dr. Edwin Jenner is the last remaining scientist at the Atlanta Disease Control Center. He stayed at his post when everyone else died or made off because he had made a promise to his dying wife - the head of the research division and "test person 19" after her infection - and had nowhere else to go anyway. He researched a cure until the last minute, but was overwhelmed by it. He explains to Rick and the others the nature of the disease, as far as one could tell before it collapsed. Dr. Edwin Jenner decides to stay in the disease control center when the automatic protection systems destroy the center with a thermal explosion as a last measure before the final power failure in order to prevent an outbreak of the pathogens stored there. The name Edwin Jenner is a reference to Edward Jenner , the pioneer of vaccination .

Jacqui

Jacqui was an Atlanta city planner and part of the original Atlanta group. At the end of the first season, she and Edwin Jenner stay in the disease control center to die independently.

Jim

Jim is an auto mechanic and is part of the original Atlanta group. The day before Amy's birthday, he is bitten in a zombie attack and decides to stay behind and become a zombie (in the comic, he does so because he hopes to see his family again).

Theodore "T-Dog" Douglas

IronE Singleton , cast member of T-Dog

T-Dog is a young African American. The color of his skin makes him the number one target for the racist Merle until he disappears. He always tries to keep a cool head and has integrated well into the group. In the third season, T-Dog is bitten in a zombie attack in prison. A little later he throws himself into the arms of two other undead in order to be able to save Carol and dies in the process.

Jimmy

Jimmy is a young man who was a neighbor of the Greene family before the Apocalypse. After the virus broke out, Hershel took him to the farm. He is Beth's friend and also helps Otis lock the walkers in the barn. At the end of season two, when the farm is overrun, Jimmy is killed by the walkers.

Axel

Axel is one of the five survivors from prison. At first he and Oscar are expelled from the group, but then Rick decides to take them in. At first, Axel claims he is a drug addict, but eventually he tells the truth that he was in jail for robbing a gas station. Since he is afraid of guns, he attacked the gas station with a toy gun. He has a brother outside of jail who has money problems, but he doesn't really miss him. Prior to the outbreak of the plague, Oscar and Big Tiny were among his best friends in prison and were always with him. Axel later befriends Carol. He knows motorcycles well and offers Daryl, who has been on a motorcycle for a while, to help with the vehicle. In the third season, during an attack by the governor on the prison, Axel is killed by the governor with a long-range shot.

Oscar

Vincent M. Ward , starring Oscar

Oscar is another of the five prisoners who survived. He and Axel are initially kicked out of the group. But after he and Axel come to the group's aid and Oscar saves Rick's life, Rick trusts the two of them and takes them in. The African American Oscar was a pretty bad burglar and has a wife and kids too. Mentally and physically he is a very strong person who never begs for his life. When Glenn and Maggie are kidnapped, he accompanies the others to Woodbury to free them, and is eventually shot dead in battle.

Milton Mamet

Milton is initially the governor's closest confidante alongside Merle. As the only known survivor of the Apocalypse, he knew Philip Blake before the latter appointed himself governor. He has no combat experience and is mainly concerned with solving Woodbury's logistical problems. After Andrea and Michonne arrive in Woodbury, Milton establishes a relationship of trust with Andrea that tests his loyalty to the district governor. Because Milton realizes that the governor wants to completely eliminate Rick's group and sometimes even torture them in an inhuman way, he tells Andrea about it. However, out of his pacifist convictions, he prevents her from shooting his former friend. When the governor tries to force him to kill the tied Andrea as a token of loyalty, he tries instead to kill the governor himself and is fatally wounded by him with several knife stabs. Milton is left behind with Andrea tied up, whereupon he bites her shoulder area as a willless zombie before she succeeds in releasing him.

Caesar Martinez

Jose Pablo Cantillo , actor of Caesar Martinez

Martinez lost his wife and children in the apocalypse and became a soldier for the governor. He has a friendly relationship with Merle, but he remains loyal to the governor even after Merle changes sides. With the betrayal and death of Merle and Milton, Martinez becomes the governor's closest confidante. Martinez is shocked when the governor shoots at all Woodbury soldiers who refuse to attack the prison again after a failed attempt. Yet he is the only soldier besides Shupert who does not turn against the governor and moves on with him without a word. Later he leaves the governor alone with Shupert. After Shupert's death, Martinez sets up a new camp under his leadership. When, after many months, he meets the governor and his new family, he takes him to his camp in the belief that the former Woodbury leader has changed and is silent about the past. Martinez pays for this serious misjudgment with his life when he is attacked from behind by the governor, wounded and thrown to the zombies to eat.

Karen

Karen lives in Woodbury with her son Noah at the beginning of the third season. After Rick, Daryl, Oscar and Michonne try to free Glenn and Maggie who were trapped in Woodbury, Karen is prevented from leaving Woodbury and Andrea is changed her mind. Karen later refuses to participate in an attack on the prison again. While the governor shoots most of his people who have agreed with Karen's opinion, she remains unharmed under a corpse and pretends to be dead. She is discovered and rescued by Rick, Daryl and Michonne. Karen then helps her rescuers break into Woodbury without gun violence. The survivors who stayed in Woodbury join Rick on their account of the governor's murders. In the fourth season she falls ill with the flu and is killed and burned by Carol.

Lizzie Samuels

Brighton Sharbino , starring Lizzie Samuels

She can't manage to free her bitten father and instead watches as Carol prevents Ryan from turning with a knife. Because it was Ryan's last wish, Carol takes care of Lizzie and her sister. Lizzie internalizes Carol's credo that you have to be strong to survive in this world. When the governor attacked the prison, Lizzie shot and killed two of his supporters without showing any emotion. After escaping from prison with Tyreese, Judith and Mika, Lizzie, who shows more and more traits of a psychopath , stabs Rabbit for no reason. When she not only closes her mouth but also her nose to Judith, who is luring the undead with her screaming, and is in the process of suffocating her, Lizzie is so absorbed in what she is doing that she no longer warns Mika's approaching undead perceives. Because Carol saves the three children at the last second, Lizzie is unable to complete her deed. Lizzie is shot by Carol after killing her sister Mika to prove Carol's theory that zombies aren't evil at all, they just want to be friends.

Mika Samuels

In contrast to her sister Lizzie, Mika shows normal emotions. She feels responsible for Lizzie and is insecure because she is not as strong as her sister. Mika gets along well with Tyreese, who tells her that she doesn't have to be ashamed if she runs away out of fear, but that sometimes it is the right thing to run away. Mika is killed by her sister Lizzie so that she can resurrect as a walker.

Noah

Tyler James Williams , cast member of Noah

Noah is an employee in the hospital to which Beth is being dragged. After trying to escape with her, Beth is captured while trying to escape. In search of weapons he runs into Daryl and Carol. But the previously safe refuge has long been overrun and partially burned down by strangers. After arriving in Alexandria with Rick's group, Noah goes on an exploration tour with Glenn, Tara, Eugene, Aiden and Nicholas. Before doing this, he asks Deanna's husband, Reg, who is an architect, to train him. Glenn, Nicholas and Noah are held captive in a revolving door by walkers in the department store. Nicholas then loses his nerve and presses his side to escape, knowing full well that he will deliver Glenn and Noah to the zombies. As a result, Noah is pulled out of the revolving door by the walkers on the other side and torn to pieces in front of Glenn's eyes.

Shortly after the homeless wandering governor appears by chance and calls himself Brian, Lilly's father dies, who is redeemed after his transformation by the governor. On her journey towards Woodbury, burned down by the governor, Lilly sleeps with Brian without knowing the full truth about him or his background. She lets himself be dazzled by his fatherly treatment of her daughter Meghan. After Meghan is redeemed by the governor with a headshot during the attack on the prison, Lilly redeems the governor, who was pierced by Michonne's sword, in the same way. It remains unclear whether she will be killed by the walkers or can escape. Lilly's sister Tara tells Glenn when the two of them are looking for Maggie that she saw her sister surrounded by walkers and failed to escape.
