action

The happy family man Jack Stanfield works for a regional bank in Seattle as head of IT. Harry, the head of security, arranges a working lunch for him with the entrepreneur Bill Cox, who wants to poach them both after hearing that they disagree with the possible merger with a larger bank consortium from Wichita, Kansas and its coordinator Gary Mitchell . When Stanfield is about to drive home in his car after dinner, Cox suddenly gets in and threatens him with a gun.

At home, Stanfield sees that his family is in the hands of Cox's accomplices. The gang's plan: Stanfield is to transfer the bank balances of the 10,000 wealthiest customers each to an account in the Cayman Islands by 10,000 US dollars, for a total of 100 million US dollars.

The next day, Stanfield is equipped with audio and video surveillance so that it cannot send hidden calls for help. But he manages to stick the ballpoint pen with a miniaturized surveillance camera in his secretary's jacket pocket in order to distract from himself, which Willie, an accomplice of Cox, escapes through a brief inattention. Cox, who surprisingly visits the bank as a supposed member of the head office, notices this. Back home, Cox shoots Willie in front of Stanfield and his wife to emphasize the seriousness of his threats. In the evening, Cox knowingly gives his son, who is suffering from a peanut allergy, a peanut biscuit, whereupon he gets anaphylactic shock. Cox does not give Stanfield the adrenaline pen until he agrees to meet all of the gangsters' demands.

The next day, Cox forces Stanfield to fire his secretary, Janet, and transfer the $ 100 million after the family's attempt to escape fails. With the help of a fax scanner and an iPod , Stanfield reads out the account data via a maintenance terminal in order to then carry out the transfers on a transaction computer. Without being noticed, he photographs part of the transaction with an employee's cell phone. Then both remove the video surveillance recordings. But Cox still holds his wife and children prisoner. When Jack comes home and finds it empty, he becomes suspicious. He kills his guard Liam and now wants to seek advice from Harry. But Cox made it look like Stanfield's wife and Harry had a relationship with a bogus message, and killed Harry with Stanfield's gun.

Stanfield now turns to his secretary, with whose help he gains access to Cox's account, and clears the balance in twenty million steps. Now he tries to arrange an exchange of the money for his family. With the help of the GPS transmitter integrated into the collar of his son's dog, he succeeds in tracking down the hijackers' hiding place on a lonely lake.

When Cox wants to kill Stanfield's daughter Sarah, one of his employees stands in his way, who is unceremoniously shot by him. In the ensuing mess, Sarah manages to escape. When Stanfield notices this, he rushes towards the chasing gangster with his car, runs over him and crashes into a neighboring shed with the burning car. During the ensuing fight, Stanfield kills Cox with a pickaxe.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the role of Jack Stanfield was apparently written for a man who must be 10 to 20 years younger than 62-year-old Harrison Ford. He described the film as "satisfactory", "harmless" entertainment.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of February 10, 2006 that the film was "competently" reusing a familiar story. He praised the achievements of the actors and in his criticism polemicized against the view that the role of Jack Stanfield should have been played by a young actor who was in good physical shape.

“The thriller, which is based on the latest high-tech level, only varies the stereotypes of the genre in order to meet common expectations. Exciting sub-themes of the story are hinted at, but remain largely unused. "

Firewall is at the same time an exciting genre film and a discourse about technology and masculinity. [...] The director does not presume to want to reinvent the wheel. Instead, he made an extremely solid, exciting genre film, which, on closer inspection, is a lot more substantial than the majority of American quality cinema or European art house production. Firewall is exactly the kind of film that is unfortunately becoming increasingly rare at the moment. "
