Frank Gorenc
Frank Gorenc (born October 14, 1957 in Ljubljana , Yugoslavia , now Slovenia ) is a general in the United States Air Force (USAF) and since August 2, 2013 commander of the US Air Forces in Europe (USAFE), US Air Forces Africa (AFAFRICA) and Allied Air Command Ramstein (AIR-COM Ramstein) as well as Director of the Joint Air Power Competence Center (JAPCC).
Education and career
Gorenc's parents immigrated to the United States in 1962, where Gorenc attended the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado after high school and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering in 1979 . He then completed a year and a half basic aviation training at the Vance Air Force Base, Oklahoma , before working there as a flight instructor for the supersonic T-38A until December 1984 .
Between 1984 and 1988 Gorenc was stationed as a swarm leader of the 525th tactical fighter squadron at Spangdahlem Air Base in Bitburg , from 1988 on in various positions at the air force base in Langley, Virginia , where he remained in changing positions until 1994. In the next few years, various uses followed, including abroad, for example as a commodore in a squadron in Kadena , Japan , and as an adjutant to the commander of the US armed forces in Europe in Stuttgart .
During his career, Gorenc has so far accumulated over 4,500 flight hours on the aircraft and helicopter types T-38A, F-15C , UH-1N and C-21 , as well as the unmanned aerial vehicle MQ-1B .
Service in the rank of general
From June 2005 to July 2006 Gorenc served as commodore of the 332nd Air Force Squadron at the Air Force Base ( Joint Base Balad ) in Balad , Iraq , and was promoted to Brigadier General on October 1, 2005 in this position . In August 2006 he was transferred back to the United States to the US Air Force Headquarters in Washington, DC , as Director of the Department of Operations Planning and Joint Forces Affairs, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Planning and Assessment, and then in June 2007 as Commander Air Force District Washington to Andrews Air Base in Maryland , from February 1, 2008 in the rank of major general . From August 2008 he served again in Langley as director for aerospace operations, from August 2009 on, while being promoted to lieutenant general, as commander of the 3rd US air fleet in Ramstein, Rhineland-Palatinate .
On June 4, 2013, US President Barack Obama nominated Gorenc to succeed Philip M. Breedlove as Commander of the US Air Forces in Europe , US Air Forces Africa and Allied Air Command Ramstein and as Director of the Joint Air Power Competence Center ; the position has been vacant since Breedlove took over the leadership of the US European Command (USEUCOM) in May . Gorenc finally took command on August 2, and his promotion to general followed on the same day.
