Frank Chambless Rand III (born 1935 in University City ; † October 20, 2003 in Santa Barbara ) was an American entrepreneur and racing car driver .

family

Frank Rand was the grandson of Frank C. Rand (1876–1949), an American entrepreneur and philanthropist . He was the founder of the International Shoe Company and used his significant fortune to support universities and hospitals. His parents were Henry Hale Rand (1909–1962) and Dorothy Bolin . His sister Carla "Teddy" Rand was married to the painter , graphic artist and sculptor Ernest Trova . For 46 years he was married to Elizabeth Barry Hobson Rand. The couple had three children - a son and two daughters - and eight grandchildren.

Entrepreneur

After training at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and Washington University in St. Louis , he joined the family business in the late 1950s and worked for Florsheim Shoes for five years . He left the company in the 1960s and became the youngest Porsche and Volkswagen dealer in the United States. Later, a representation came for Honda - Motorcycles added.

In the 1970s he switched from car dealer to real estate agent . He also trained as a flight instructor and ran a flight school in his new hometown of Phoenix . He spent the last years of his professional life as an IBM dealer in Santa Barbara, California .

Racing career

The trading and restoration of Porsche sports cars brought Rand to motorsport as a men 's driver. He started in national sports car races and in the SCCA sports car championship . He achieved his greatest success in an international endurance race . Together with Bill Wuesthoff and Bruce Jennings , he finished third overall in a Porsche 718 RS 60 in the Sebring 12-hour race in 1962 .
