Franz Winter studied classical studies in Vienna and Munich , but initially switched to studying philology at the University of Bonn and attended the seminars of Reinhard Kekulé von Stradonitz , with whose family he also entered into a personal relationship. To this day it is the authoritative work on terracotta research.

In 1899 he was appointed full professor at the University of Innsbruck , in 1905 in Graz , in 1907 in Strasbourg , and in 1912 he returned to Bonn as Georg Loeschcke's successor , where he taught until 1928.
