action

A traveling circus moves through a snow-covered landscape when suddenly an avalanche buries the jugglers with their cars and animals. Once again, Mrs. Hippe, a female version of the Grim Reaper, brought death to many people. This time, however, her plan didn't quite work out: Little Jakob escaped the masses of snow. Frau Holle, who pursues the misfortune, saves him and takes him into her magical world above the clouds. There she lets him in on the secrets of making weather. Jacob learns so quickly that he soon has snow falling in the Sahara and roses blooming in the eternal ice. One day, when the boy looks into Frau Holle's crystal ball, little Elisabeth awakens his interest on earth. When the girl's mother dies, Jakob makes his way to earth to help his little friend.

While Jakob falls in love with Elisabeth, her stepsister Dora has an eye on Jakob. Together with her mother, she forges a plot. Instead of sugar, they sprinkle a cake that Elisabeth baked for Jakob with sleeping powder. Elisabeth is thrown into a well and her clothes are pushed under Jacob. While Elisabeth is being saved from Frau Hippe by Frau Holle, Jakob is accused of murder. Elisabeth's father, as a judge, condemns Jacob to death, but grants a pardon in the event that a virgin marries the convicted person. Dora takes the opportunity to offer herself as a bride. Before the wedding, Jakob flees to the traveling circus, where he meets Mrs. Hippe. She lies to him about Elisabeth's fate. Convinced that his loved one is dead, Jakob also wants to die and surrenders. When he has the rope around his neck, Mrs. Holle releases Elisabeth, who uses Mrs. Holle's duvet cover as a balloon and floats down to the earth. Jakob is released and marries Elisabeth, while the stepmother and sister, who had previously plundered the community treasury, are caught in a balloon by Mrs. Hippe on their escape.

criticism

“The story of Ms. Holle, who not only controls the weather and the seasons, but also the fortunes of loved ones and ensures greater justice. The film varies the fairy tale of the same name by the Brothers Grimm very freely and lavishly decorates it with motifs from Slavic folk tales. Despite the occasional overload of motifs and a few arts and crafts moments, the overall result was an imaginative and atmospheric fairy tale adventure for children and adults that provides insights into basic human issues. "

Cinema found: "Simple, but poetic."
