action

Rachel White is single and works as an attorney in a New York law firm. When she had too much to drink on her thirtieth birthday, she went to a pub with Dex, the fiancé of her best friend Darcy, for one last drink. There Rachel reveals to him that she fell in love with him while studying. Then they take a taxi together and wake up in bed together the next morning. Before the two can speak, Dex sneaks away because Darcy has called him and Rachel several times. Rachel initially assumes that it was just a one-off sexual adventure, but Dex later reveals to Rachel that he had also been in love with her since college.

Ethan's friends with Darcy and Rachel since childhood and the only one who knows what happened between Rachel and Dex. He should keep this a secret for the time being. At the same time, Dex's mother suffers from depression and her only encouragement right now is the anticipation of her son's wedding. When Dex meets Rachel over the weekend, the two of them run into his parents. His father becomes suspicious and tells his son to end the relationship. Out of consideration for his parents, Dex actually ends the relationship and returns to Darcy, who has meanwhile secretly enjoyed herself with Dex's best friend Marcus.

The closer the wedding gets, the less Dex and Rachel talk to each other. Ethan tells Rachel to finally clear things up. Ethan moves to London for professional reasons. Rachel flies after him and here Ethan reveals to her that he has loved her since childhood. Rachel returns to New York and finds Dex at her door. He reveals to her that he canceled the wedding with Darcy a few hours ago. Rachel is pleased until Darcy also comes by and wants to talk to her. Dex goes into hiding and Darcy reveals to Rachel that she cheated on Dex with his best friend, Marcus. She is also pregnant from Marcus. Darcy then discovers Dex's jacket and finds out that Rachel is Dex's lover, and storms out of the apartment angrily.

After two months, Rachel and Darcy meet, who have not spoken to each other since then. Darcy assures Rachel that she is very happy, and Rachel is happy for her. Rachel later meets the waiting Dex and the two walk away hand in hand.

During the credits, another scene is shown in which Darcy appears in London and calls out for Ethan on the street. When he discovers it, he runs away and "To be continued ..." is displayed.

Reviews

"An unimaginatively staged romantic comedy about clichéd life and love situations of chic 30-year-olds that is stiffly and without joke heading for its predictable end"

"Actually, this romantic comedy is hardly worth mentioning, but it just offers a little bit of secret pleasure in seeing one of the beautiful and powerful fall."

“That Kate Hudson, who hardly seems to stop at a romantic comedy, has accepted the role of the horned fiancé Darcy is astonishing in view of the unimaginative script from the retort. Perhaps this act of self-disassembly is symptomatic of what is happening to actresses her age in Hollywood. "

- Kathrin Häger - film service

“The stupid thing about" foreign fish "is that it is not a harrowing social report from the fringes of society, nor a biting satire, but a romantic comedy. We should actually like them all. [...] The so heavily courted Dex has the charm of a broken coffee machine. His lack of humor and personality is so evident that you would have to make room for him on the bus. A script did a great job here. Because the little boy ironed into his suit cannot help wishing him, like the others, all sorts of things on his neck, just not great love. "

- Philipp Bühler - Berliner Zeitung
