The defending champions in the singles were Roy Emerson for men and Françoise Durr for women. The defending champions were John Newcombe and Tony Roche in the men's doubles, Gail Sherriff and Francoise Durr in the ladies doubles and Billie Jean King and Owen Davidson in the mixed doubles .
It was the first edition of the Grand Slam tournament since the beginning of the Open Era to allow professional tennis players.
