The 96th French Open 1997 took place from May 26th to June 8th 1997 in Paris , France .

128 men and women took part in the individual competitions in the main round.

Defending champions in the singles were Jewgeni Kafelnikow in the men and Steffi Graf in the women. In the men's doubles, Jewgeni Kafelnikow and Daniel Vacek were also the defending champions , in the women's doubles Lindsay Davenport and Mary Joe Fernández . Patricia Tarabini and Javier Frana were the defending champions in mixed .

In the men's singles, the unseeded Gustavo Kuerten won his first Grand Slam title. In the women's singles Iva Majoli won against Martina Hingis , inflicting the only defeat at a Grand Slam tournament this year. In the men's doubles, Kafelnikow and Vacek defended their title, in the women's doubles Gigi Fernández and Natallja Swerawa regained their 1996 title. In mixed, Rika Hiraki and Mahesh Bhupathi won .
