Otto von Heinemann

Friedrich Karl Otto von Heinemann (born March 7, 1824 in Helmstedt ; † June 7, 1904 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German librarian and historian . From 1868 to 1904 he was director of the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel.

origin

He came from a family of officials. His grandfather, the Brunswick Lieutenant Colonel Ernst Christoph Heinemann (1734–1785), brought the imperial nobility into the family in 1781. His parents were the district court director Friedrich von Heinemann (1770-1854) and his wife Charlotte, nee Meinders (1785-1854), the daughter of the bailiff Karl Ludwig Meinders. He had several known brothers:

  • Alexander (1813–1884), Prussian major general
  • Ferdinand (1818–1881), grammar school director and writer
  • Adolf (1820–1906), Prussian major general

Life

Heinemann studied history and modern languages ​​from 1843 to 1846 in Bonn with Friedrich Christoph Dahlmann and in Berlin with Leopold von Ranke . Between 1848 and 1850 he worked as a private tutor in Paris and in 1852 switched to the Wolfenbüttel Herzog August Library as a volunteer ("scientific assistant").

From 1854 to 1863 he was a teacher at the grammar school in Bernburg , where he also managed the main archive in Bernburg. In 1868 Heinemann was appointed head of the Herzog August Library as successor to Ludwig Konrad Bethmann , and in 1880 he was appointed "Senior Librarian". In 1897 he was appointed Privy Councilor of the ducal Braunschweig. During his tenure as library director, the new library building, which opened in 1887, was built between 1881 and 1886. He reorganized the administration and modernized the cataloging of manuscripts and old prints.

From 1869 to 1894 he also taught at the teachers' college in Wolfenbüttel and from 1889 to 1897 as a lecturer at the Technical University of Braunschweig . From 1877 to 1897 he was chairman of the Harz Association for History and Archeology and from 1882 to 1900 a member of the Anhalt regional synod.

Von Heinemann was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 1868 . He died on June 7, 1904 in Wolfenbüttel.

family

In 1854 in Braunschweig he married Helene von Brandenstein (1827–1902), the adoptive and natural daughter of the Brunswick Major General Heinrich von Brandenstein (1787–1851) and Caroline Juliane Christiane von Meyern, widowed von Proessler. The couple had two sons and two daughters:
