Friedrich von Gayl

Friedrich Georg Ludwig Freiherr von Gayl (born February 4, 1776 in Marienburg , † January 12, 1853 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

He was the son of Kasimir Wilhelm Ernst Freiherr von Gayl (1746–1821) and his wife Wilhelmine, widowed von Lüderitz, born von Schenk (1747–1781). His father was a captain . D. , Herr auf Eichstedt and Chamber Director. Friedrich still had nine siblings, including Ludwig (1785-1853), who later rose to lieutenant general and was Chamberlain in Oldenburg .

Military career

On November 16, 1790, Gayl joined the Prussian Army's "Crown Prince" infantry regiment as a private corporal . With the regiment he took part in the campaign against France in 1793/95 and became second lieutenant on December 18, 1795 . In the 1806/07 campaign , Gayl fought near Auerstedt and Prenzlau . On June 2, 1807, he came to the " Blücher " corps as a prime lieutenant . After the Peace of Tilsit , Gayl was transferred to the 1st Pomeranian Infantry Regiment at the end of the year . Here he rose to staff captain and commander of the depot in December 1811 and was appointed company commander as captain on May 5, 1812 . Gayl led his company in the 1812 campaign in the battles near Eckau and Wollgund. When the wars of liberation against Napoleon began the following year , he took part in the battles near Großbeeren , Dennewitz and Leipzig and was promoted to major on December 21, 1813 . Seriously wounded during the fighting at Hoogstraten , Gayl was deployed during the summer campaign at Ligny and two days later at Waterloo . After the victorious battle, he was appointed commander of the fusilier battalion on June 19, 1815.

After the end of the war, in which Gayl had been awarded both classes of the Iron Cross and the Order of St. Anna II. Class, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on March 30, 1821 . Six years later he was promoted to colonel and on March 30, 1828, Gayl was initially commissioned with the command of the 31st Infantry Regiment in Erfurt , before he was finally appointed commander on March 30, 1829. From this post Gayl was delivered on 26 March 1831 by awarding the character as a major general with the statutory pension retired.

After his death he was buried on January 15, 1853 in the old garrison cemetery in Berlin.

family

Gayl married Charlotte Sophie Concordie Barz (1786–1872) on September 17, 1811 in Kolberg . She was the daughter of the superintendent in Kolberg, Johann Wilhelm Barz. The following children were born from the marriage:
