Soccer World Cup 1966 / North Korea
This article is about the national soccer team of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea ( North Korea ) at the 1966 World Cup in England .
qualification
Originally, North Korea was supposed to play in a group against Australia , South Africa and South Korea . The first in the group would have reached the semi-finals together with three African teams. Only the winner would have qualified for the world championship. However, since all African teams withdrew their registration after the announcement of this mode due to their demand to get at least one safe World Cup starting place, the regulation became obsolete.
A short time later, South Africa was suspended by the world football association FIFA because of its apartheid policy , leaving only three teams in the Asia-Oceanic qualification. Finally, South Korea also withdrew its registration because they could not agree on a neutral venue against North Korea. This meant that the North Koreans in qualifying group 14 only had to play against Australia in the two legs. Due to political problems, both games were played in the Olympic Stadium in the capital of neutral Cambodia , Phnom Penh . North Korea won the summary with 9-2 goals and qualified for the first time in its history for the finals of a soccer world championship .
