Brazilian games at the 1974 World Cup
Preliminary round
As defending champions, Brazil was placed in Group 2 for the opening game:
- Brazil 0-0 Yugoslavia
- Brazil 0-0 Scotland
- Brazil 3-0 Zaire - goals: 1-0 Jairzinho (12th min.), 2-0 Rivelino (66th min.), 3-0 Valdomiro (79th min.)
World champions Brazil had a very difficult time in the preliminary round. After two goalless draws against the strong Yugoslavs and Scots, they had to wait until the 79th minute in the final group game against Zaire to qualify for the second round with one goal more than Scotland .
Second final round (Group A)
- Brazil - GDR 1-0 - Goal: Rivelino (60. Min.) - The GDR played their best game at this tournament against the defending champions and brought Brazil to the verge of defeat. Only a clever free-kick trick by the Brazilians made it possible for playmaker Rivelino to score the 1-0 winner.
- Brazil 2-1 Argentina - goals: 1-0 Rivelino (32nd min.), 1-1 Brindisi (35th min.), 2-1 Jairzinho (49th min.)
- Brazil 0-2 Netherlands - Goals: 0-1 Neeskens (50th min.), 0-2 Cruyff (65th min.) - The Dutch drove the Brazilians along in an overly tough game between the only two victorious teams in Group A her offside trap to despair. When the Netherlands then led 2-0, the German referee Kurt Tschenscher put the Brazilian captain Luís Pereira off the field after an assault.
Third place game
- Brazil 0-1 Poland - Goal: Lato (76th min.)
Brazil played with Emerson Leão, Marinho Peres, Zé Maria, Francisco Marinho, Alfredo, Rivelino, Paulo César Carpegiani, Ademir da Guia, Dirceu, Jairzinho, Valdomiro
