General of the artillery , historically also Feldzeugmeister , designates a general rank in the former German land forces ( Prussian Army , Bavarian Army , Saxon Army , Württemberg Army , Reichswehr and Wehrmacht ), namely the regular second highest rank under the Colonel General . Cavalry officers were promoted accordingly to general of the cavalry , and infantry officers to general of the infantry .

In the Wehrmacht there were the equivalent ranks general of the infantry , general of the armored troops , general of the pioneers , general of the mountain troops or general of the parachute troops . Today in the Bundeswehr the rank of lieutenant general corresponds to the traditional rank. In the NVA the rank no longer existed, the general of the artillery corresponded to the general colonel.

In the Bundeswehr there was the position of general of the artillery troops for the officer responsible for certain issues relating to the training and equipment of the artillery . The use was exercised in personal union with the post of stage manager of the artillery created in 1956 , which ceased in the 1990s. All four generals of the artillery troops ( Kurt Gieser (1959–1963), Heinz-Helmut von Hinckeldey (1963–1968), Manfred Kublitz (1968–1971) and Robert Stadlhofer (1971–1975)) held the rank of brigadier general .

The position of general of the artillery troops was linked to that of the commander's artillery school. During the service of Brigadier General Stadlhofer (April 1971 - September 1977), the function was expanded in 1975 to become the general of the combat support troops. From 1990 the position was called General of the Artillery and since 2008 at the latest, General of the Artillery Force .

Other land forces

Corresponding positions also exist for the other branches of the army . Since this is a service position, a colonel is sometimes a "general of" the respective military branch . The salutation Mr. General or Mr. Colonel is common; the salutation Herr General der Artillerie is unusual, as it is not a rank.
