history

Georgia, founded in August 1763 as a British colony, is named after the then British King George III. The namesake, governor Benning Wentworth , tried in this way to prevent the Vermont colony from being added to the New York colony, in which the city name already existed. Wentworth believed that King George would not accept two eponymous cities named after him in the same area. He was right.

During the war against the British colony of Canada (1812), a trade embargo was imposed on the American side. While most of the border areas were under the embargo, it was taken very seriously in Georgia. The embargo was so effective that the smugglers dubbed Georgia the nickname Hells Gate . This epithet is still used today, even if its origin is largely forgotten.

Today the economy of the municipality is determined by agriculture and forestry, and to a lesser extent by tourism.

religion

There are two religious communities in the village, a Baptist and a Roman Catholic . A primary and secondary school, two museums on local history and a library complete the public facilities.
