Gernot is a male given name from Old High German . Its meaning is made up of the elements ger ("spear") and khnoton ("swing", in the sense of "fight").

Gernot is the name of one of the Burgundian kings ( Gunther , Gernot and Giselher ) in the Nibelungenlied . By transforming the "o" in the name to "e" and "er" in Gernot, the family name Gernet (h), Gernert (h), Gernt (h), Görnert and by dropping the "t" also the name Gerner developed . This is particularly true for the Franconian area in the 14th and 15th centuries. Other derivatives are Gerndt, Girndt, Girnth, Gürntke, Girntke and Gernotke (k-suffix, Slavic).
