The Gertrud-von-le-Fort-Gymnasium Oberstdorf , founded in 1924 and named after the poet Gertrud von le Fort since 1976 , is the southernmost grammar school in Germany. It is mainly attended by students from southern Oberallgäu and neighboring Kleinwalsertal (Austria). The school is a partner school for winter sports .

history

Thanks to the initiative of 65 Oberstdorf citizens, the Oberstdorf private secondary school was able to start teaching in today's meeting room of the Old Town Hall in Oberstdorf on September 2, 1924 . On January 8, 1926, consisting of two classes, she moved to Villa Maria on Fuggerstrasse after the market had rebuilt this building and made it available to the Realschulverein free of charge. The school was now called Oberstdorf Real and Latin School . In an effort to promote the development of the school, the spa guests were also advertised: For example, a prospectus indicated two pensions in which children in need of relaxation could find accommodation and at the same time continue their school education; because the "Oberstdorfer Realschule with Latin operation" was also founded "in order not to lag behind other health resorts of lesser importance".

With the school year 1928/29, the profile of the school changed again. It was now called the Privat-Realschule Oberstdorf with a commercial department until 1938 , after a commercial department with two courses had been attached. With the establishment of the 6th grade in the school year 1929/30, the expansion of the school had come to an end for the time being. In the following year she received “full state approval and recognition”. Due to the increasing number of pupils, the market had the school house expanded and expanded between 1933 and 1938.

In order to ensure the financing and the existence of the school, the market in Oberstdorf took over the previous private secondary school on April 1, 1938 , with which it was now treated as the municipal secondary school in Oberstdorf on an equal footing with the state schools. At the same time, due to the political situation, the neighboring Kleinwalsertal (Austria) was added as a further catchment area. The school, now the community high school for boys , was expanded into a full institution (1940/42), so that on April 1, 1942, pupils with the school leaving certificate left school for the first time .

As a result of the turmoil of the war, there were no more classes after the Easter break in 1945. On January 14, 1946, the community high school for boys, Oberstdorf was reopened and teaching was gradually started. However, it was only from the school year 1949/50 onwards that all subjects could be taught without abbreviation and elective courses set up. The Abitur class 1955/56 received the school leaving certificate for the first time after nine years of high school.

In order to largely relieve the Oberstdorf market of the costs, the school was nationalized on March 2, 1957 as one of the first municipal schools in Bavaria and thus Oberstdorf State High School . At the beginning of the school year 1959/60 she then moved into the newly built school building on Rubinger Straße. In addition to the mathematical and natural science educational path (with the language sequence of the old high school: English, Latin or French), a new language branch (with the language sequence of the old high school: English, Latin, French) was offered at the beginning of the school year 1964/65.

From 1965 the name of the school was: Gymnasium Oberstdorf. Mathematical, natural science and modern language grammar school. With the decree of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education of February 21, 1966, the high school diploma obtained at Oberstdorf grammar school was equated with that of an Austrian middle school (general secondary school) for pupils from Kleinwalsertal (Austria). The influx of students and the size of the catchment area meant that from September 1968 a branch school was built in Sonthofen to the north . On August 1, 1974, this then became independent as the Gymnasium Sonthofen. Mathematical and natural science high school . In addition, from 1972/73 there were plans for another Oberstdorf grammar school subsidiary in Immenstadt , which was implemented from 1978 with the current grammar school in Immenstadt .

On the occasion of the 100th birthday of the poet Gertrud von le Fort , who lived in Oberstdorf from 1940 to 1971 and was buried there , the school was renamed Gertrud-von-le-Fort-Gymnasium on October 9, 1976 . The educational pathways of the scientific-technological and the linguistic grammar school have existed since 2003 .

The school's namesake

The poet Gertrud von le Fort (1876–1971) lived in Oberstdorf from 1940 until her death in 1971. In addition to many honors that she received, there is also that of the honorary citizen of Oberstdorf (1956). Gertrud von le Fort is buried in a grave of honor in the Oberstdorf forest cemetery. Although one of the most important poets of the 20th century, she has been wrongly forgotten today. When the school was named on October 11, 1976, the associated mandate for the school was formulated as follows: “Teachers and students at our grammar school are now impressively stimulated, Gertrud von le Fort, her nature and work in a similar desire for closeness to learn to love, as she herself longed to show her love for everything that aroused her attention and was worthy of her sympathy.
