History of the Present (abbreviated GdG ) is a political online magazine from Switzerland that publishes articles on the public debate. The editors are all professors or lecturers, the authors are international cultural , humanities and social scientists as well as lawyers and artists . Contemporary history is deliberately differentiated from other online magazines whose authorship consists mainly of journalists. The platform is financed through donations and is supported by a non-profit association. This should guarantee independent work without advertising.
Self-presentation
According to the self-portrayal, history of the present is a platform for contributions from the humanities and cultural studies perspective with political intent. She is politically independent, aggressive, not neutral, critical of power and intellectually curious. The contributions are interventions in the field of media opinion production in Switzerland, which is increasingly subject to economic and ideological pressure. The topics are neither limited to Switzerland nor to the present. Contemporary history would like to intervene in the public debate with a historical perspective, cultural-scientific expertise and a critical and reflective form of knowledge - without technical jargon and footnotes, but with the claim to think further.
profile
The offerings of History of the Present can be accessed via the website and RSS feeds. On the day of publication in February 2016, the project started with 8 articles by 8 authors and reached over 50,000 hits from the start.
In addition to the main section “Stories of the Present”, there are other articles in the “Stimulus” and “Conversations” sections. In the category “stimulus words”, keywords are dissected that are newly emerging in the public debate, and in “conversations” there are interviews, dialogues and disputes. In addition, articles are assigned a current focus at irregular intervals. Commenting on the articles does not take place on the page itself, but on Facebook. In addition, the platform invites you to send in criticism, comments and your own articles.
Contemporary history has a special profile due to its sometimes media-critical attitude and due to its academic authorship.
