The Gründelbach is, together with its longer right upper course, about 7 km, from its confluence with the left upper course about 5 km long brook in the district of Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg , which after about northeast at the district of Beihingen am Neckar from Freiberg into the middle Neckar flows.

Surname

According to the official river map, the Gründelbach arises today through the confluence of the short left Altachgraben and the long right Riedgraben. An older topographic map, on the other hand, suggests the left upper arm to the Gründelbach.

geography

The Gründelbach arises today at almost 240  m above sea level. NHN next to the Eglosheim sewage treatment plant and next to the federal road 27 on the city limits from Ludwigsburg to Asperg from the confluence of Riedgraben and Altachgraben .

Upper Altachgraben

The shorter, only about 0.7 km long left upper course Altachgraben begins its open course on the eastern edge of the A 81 at Asperger's traffic training area at about 242  m above sea level. NHN . Alongside dirt roads in the middle of a wide natural hollow, it flows north-east in a straight ditch that is constantly accompanied by a gallery on the left. The Altachgraben drains an area of around 1.4 km².

Upper Riedgraben

The larger right upper course Riedgraben begins its way today at about 257  m above sea level. NHN in the middle of a field in a grassy gully on the southern edge of Eglosheim and initially moves east to northeast. Soon it separates the southernmost row of houses from Eglosheim along Riedstrasse from the allotment garden on the right bank. Then, in front of the Eglosheim settlement center, it turns around the newer part of the Eglosheim settlement on the north run, flows between the sports area on the left and the cemetery on the right and reaches the edge of the B 27, which it follows north-west. After passing the Eglosheim sewage treatment plant, it joins the Altachgraben after 1.9 km. It has a catchment area of around 2.3 km².

course

The Gründelbach , created by the confluence, flows in the direction of the Altachgraben under the main road and on the other side reaches the edge of the park area around the Monrepos lake castle , on the north-western border of which it then runs, while the Monrepos moat begins on the opposite side and delimits the park area . In this is a 5.5 hectare lake with some islands, which is fed by the Monrepos moat and at the lower end of some moats from the same side. Towards the end of the castle grounds, the lake drains via a drain to the Gründelbach. This then turns for only about half a kilometer in the now deeper valley to the northwest, in order to continue its previous direction after the inflow of another small body of water called Riedgraben . For a long time, the motorway accompanies him very close to the left.

Less than a kilometer further down, it reaches the outskirts of Freiberg- Heutingsheim after flowing under the road bridge of the L 1113 Eglosheim– Großingersheim . It passes through newer settlement areas and then moves between the old center of the village and the newer settlement area of the Freiberg district of Geisingen am Neckar on the left slope. Before he even reached the wide Neckar floodplain, he changed to the adjacent settlement area of the Beihingen am Neckar district without any vacant lots and turned north. It then flows in a flat course through the floodplain and the sports area to the left of the river to its confluence with the central Neckar about a quarter of a kilometer above the motorway bridge at a little below 185  m above sea level. NHN .

The 7.0 km long stretch of water from Riedgraben and then Gründelbach empties about 72 meters below the origin of the Riedgraben near Eglosheim, the mean bed gradient is 10 ‰.

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Gründelbach covers 17.3 km², of which, from a natural point of view, the vast majority is in the sub-area Langes Feld of the Neckar basin , a small one in the far east in the sub-area Pleidelsheimer Mulde , which is part of the central Neckar valley.

The highest point is on the small plateau of standing on the western edge of the basin Aspergs and reached 355.8  meters above sea level. NHN .

Beyond this steep mountain cone lies the catchment area of the Enz everywhere , in the northwest especially that of its lower tributary Saubach . In turn, in the northwest of the catchment area, the Wohbach flows a little deeper to the Enz, while the small drainage area of the Langer Graben floodplain, which is being created near the Neckar floodplain of the Gründelbach, borders closer to its mouth on the north side . In the east, the Neckar flows quite close, so that only a few significant tributaries run to it from the watershed, with the exception of the brook that is formed in the central Ludwigsburg city area through the Steigenklinge Thäle of Marbacher Strasse, which is twisted. Its catchment area also borders in the south, then in the southwest back to Asperg that of the Leudelsbach , which in turn flows to the Enz.

The right upper course Riedgraben runs through the urban area of Ludwigsburg , the left upper course Altachgraben that of the small town Asperg . From the confluence of the Gründelbach itself, it first flows into Ludwigsburg's urban area until shortly after Monrepos Castle, then before the inflow of the left tributary (!) Riedgraben overflows into the small town of Freiberg am Neckar , where it flows after a longer section than before also flows out.

In addition to the municipalities mentioned, the municipality of Tamm also has a small area on the northwestern edge of the catchment area and the Wilhelmshof exclave of the city of Bietigheim-Bissingen has a very small one; there are no open waters in either.

geology

The highest Triassic layer in the catchment area is the small high plateau on the Asperg in the reed sandstone ( Stuttgart formation ). In the rest of the western part there is often Gipskeuper ( Grabfeld Formation ), in the middle the even deeper Lettenkeuper ( Erfurt Formation ). The stream bed runs for the first time in Beihingen in the Upper Muschelkalk . These Triassic layers are largely covered by loess sediment from Quaternary deposits, often from loess-bearing fluid earth . In the shallow basin around the Altachgraben and then the Gründelbach and the lake in the castle park up to the Monrepos castle there is wide flood sediment.

From Asperg via Eglosheim, some fault lines in the catchment area run roughly east-northeast, and from the Favoritepark there are two roughly north-west across them.

Two geotopes are designated in the catchment area. To the left of the Riedgraben in Eglosheim near the sports area on Hans-Römer-Weg, a wall of a former quarry up to three meters high has been preserved, where the unusually powerful border dolomite of the Lettenkeuper ( Erfurt formation ) was once mined.

At Altach on the Ludwigsburg Nord driveway, there are half a dozen red sandstone blocks that were found during the construction of the motorway and then relocated a little. Because the blocks are quite large and unrounded and the next extensive red sandstone deposit is 15 kilometers away today, it is assumed that they were brought to the location during the Pleistocene by flowing earth.

Nature and protected areas

There are two natural monuments in the catchment area. The 0.6 hectare Lochwiesen wetland is located in the Altachgraben-Obertal between the Asperger open-air swimming pool and the A 81 to the east of it; periodically there is water in a pond here. The 0.9 hectare Altach wetland on the southern edge of the Altach railway maintenance facility extends along a water-bearing ditch in a natural waterlogging basin towards the Gründelbach. The ditch begins on the motorway and ends at the B 27.

To the east of Eglosheim, the catchment area at the edge has a share of the Favoritepark and the nature reserve established there.

The landscape protection areas Schloßanlage Monrepos and Seeschloßallee and the surrounding area are located right in the catchment area , while the other landscape protection areas Hohenasperg-Hurst and the surrounding area , Upper Leudelsbachtal , surroundings of the favorite park , old railway line from Bietigheim to Heutingsheim and finally at the mouth of the Neckar valley between Benningen have shares and Großingersheim with adjacent areas .

The watercourse from the source of the upper Riedgraben to the district boundary of Beihingen is classified as rich in fine material , then up to the mouth as a high-material, carbonate low mountain stream .

The designated biotopes are mostly woody plants in the protected areas already mentioned, in the Monrepos Castle Park and along the major traffic routes (motorway, main road, abandoned railway line). A comparison with older topographic maps shows that there used to be only small settlement areas in the catchment area and that most of the fertile Lange Feld was used for agriculture. This change in use reflects the heavy settlement, densification and construction of traffic routes typical of the central Neckar region in the 20th century. Before that, the open course of the upper reaches of the Riedgraben began almost one and a half kilometers further west near today's Brühlstraße from Asperg at the southern foot of the Asperg on the eastern edge of the town at that time and thus only a few hundred meters from the western edge of Asperg, where the course of the Riedgraben (!) to the Leudelsbach began.
