The "Gasthaus auf dem Grünten", around 1880

The Grüntenhaus was the first hotel in the Allgäu Alps . Today it is a mountain inn with the character of a hut. The building is located at a height of 1535 meters on the Grünten , which was chosen for the hotel because of its location, which offers a wide view of the Allgäu.

history

On a trip to Switzerland, Carl Hirnbein , an entrepreneur from Wilhams in the Allgäu, became aware of the possibilities of using the mountains for tourism. On July 30, 1842, he reported to his wife about a visit to the Rigi , where there were already six inns or hotels at that time, and the crowd on the mountain summit, and ten years later he bought both Alpe Gund in Grüntenmulde and the Schartenschwand alpine area . In 1853 the construction of an inn in the "mountain style" according to the plans of a Kempten architect on the alpine area above Burgberg began.

Announcement of the official opening

While the stones for the foundation could be broken on site, the remaining building materials had to be carried to the construction site with carriers and pack animals. 30 workers were employed there from May to September 1853 under the direction of master bricklayer Schwarz from Immenstadt im Allgäu . In addition to the restoration with overnight accommodation for around 18 guests, stable buildings and a cheese dairy were also built . A pavilion was also built on the Hochwarthe, the current location of the green transmitter . While the foundations of the hotel and the stables were built in massive construction, was used for the rest of the buildings bricks . In September 1853, carpenter Ignaz Jäck from Immenstadt erected the roof structure. In 1854, the existing narrow footpath from Burgberg to Grünten was expanded into a path that could also be used for horse riding. Acquisition of land and inventory cost Carl Hirnbein around 15,000 guilders.

In the middle of 1854, the Grüntenhaus, which had a dining room, nine guest rooms and a dormitory in the attic, was opened. Beer , wine , seltzer water and champagne were available to entertain the guests . The production of Limburg cheese began in the dairy . The cultural needs of the guests were met by purchasing a guitar and setting up a small library . Souvenirs in the form of books and steel engravings could also be purchased at the hotel.

The first guests, members of the Munich Citizens' Singer Guild , arrived on June 15, 1854. Although the Grüntenhaus was operated as a restaurant and hotel as early as the summer of 1854, the official opening did not take place until June 10, 1855. Hirnbein advertised on a leaflet, among other things, the convenient railway connection in Immenstadt, the “indescribably charming view”, the “well-equipped dairy” - the Alpe Gund was grazed by around 26 cows at the time - as well as the culinary delights and service of his house . Hirnbein not only employed a head and a lower cow, a guard for the winter, cook and waitress, but soon also set up an auxiliary post office at the Grüntenhaus.

In order to attract guests, he published advertisements in various newspapers. From the beginning, he not only addressed hikers and mountaineers, but also provided the opportunity to ride up the Grünten from Burgberg. For this purpose he imported four mules from Savoy and hired a donkey driver. He also offered the opportunity to take a whey diet .

Hirnbein's concept of a more bourgeois hotel was later not pursued. The Grüntenhaus still exists, but is run as a mountain inn with the character of a hut. Today it only offers an inn and five shared rooms for hikers.

The Grüntenhaus can be reached by hikers from various starting points. From the mountain station of the Grünten cable car , which starts in Rettenberg , the Grüntenhaus can be reached on foot in around 20 minutes. An application for the construction of a road to the Grüntenhaus by the operator was rejected for reasons of environmental protection.

Guests

One of the most prominent spa guests was Karl Brater , who started the Süddeutsche Zeitung . Agnes Sapper reported about his stay - the members of the Brater family were probably the first guests to stay in the Grüntenhaus for a long time - in her work Frau Pauline Brater - Life Picture of a German Woman .

Another frequent guest in the Grüntenhaus was the Bavarian politician Joseph Völk , in honor of whom a large memorial service was held at the Grüntenhaus in 1884.
