Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ is the first studio album by American rock singer Bruce Springsteen . The band with whom he recorded the album had no name at the time, but is considered the early E Street Band . Officially, however, it was only announced with this name from 1974. The album sold over 25,000 times in the first year and a total of around 2 million times (as of January 2008).
history
Springsteen and his first manager Mike Appel decided to record the album at the inexpensive 914 Sound Studios in Orangetown , Rockland County , in order to save as much as possible on the advance payment from Columbia Records .
The two tracks Blinded by the Light and Spirit in the Night were released as singles , but did not achieve any notable placements.
In 2003 the album was voted number 379 of the 500 best albums of all time by the American music magazine Rolling Stone .
The Manfred Mann's Earth Band coverte three tracks on the album: Spirit in the Night ( Nightingales & Bombers , 1975) Blinded by the Light ( The Roaring Silence , 1976) and For You ( Chance , 1980). With Blinded by the Light , the Earth Band achieved a No. 1 hit in the United States in 1976.
David Bowie later recorded three tracks on the album. Growin 'Up appeared on a re-issue of Pin Ups , a record with covers. He released the title It's Hard to Be a Saint in the City on the 3-CD box Sound + Vision . Spirits in the Night was ultimately chosen for the Astronettes .
In 2010 the album was released with the following six studio albums in the CD box set The Collection 1973-84 .
