Grenade (German: "grenade" ) is the title of R & B - song of American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars .

Background information

“I was with my friend Benny Blanco and he played me a few songs and he played a song that had a line of lyrics [similar to Grenade] ... He said the band had no contract and the CD was never released. I said to Benny that I could identify with the song so much and that I really wanted to use it and make it my own song. So I started writing my own version. It's a heartbreaking song about a broken heart and I think anyone can relate to it. You are so in love and ask yourself: 'What am I doing wrong? What can I not give you I would die for you, but why don't I get this love back? '"

- Bruno Mars

Grenade was written by Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine, Brody Brown, Claude Kelly, and Andrew Wyatt. The production of the song took over the production team The Smeezingtons , consisting of Mars, Lawrence and Levine. In an interview with the US website Idolator , Bruno Mars revealed that the songwriter and producer Benny Blanco played him an unreleased song with a similar theme as Grenade's , which served as the inspiration for the song. He also expressed a desire to release Grenade as a single as he was one of his personal favorites.

Before the Doo-Wops & Hooligans album was released , two promo singles were released exclusively on iTunes . The first single was Liquor Store Blues , a collaboration with Damian Marley . This was followed on September 28th Grenade as a second pre-release.

composition

Grenade is a pop - and R & B - ballad . A sheet of music published by Sony / ATV Music Publishing shows that Grenade is written in the key of D minor and has a medium tempo of 108 beats per minute . Mars' vocal range is from A 3 to D 5 . The song begins quietly, but the volume is continuously increased, musically and lyrically, up to the climax, the chorus. “Pulsating synthesizer sounds ” can be heard in the background . According to Jon Caramanica, The New York Times , the song contains elements of pop music from the 1980s and is accompanied by drums such as those used by Kanye West . Grenade includes parts of the song I'll Fight by the singer Jeff Tweedy .

Lyrically Grenade is about an unrequited love. Mars sings about how he would do anything for his loved one, including intercepting a grenade for her or throwing himself in front of a train for her.

reception

Grenade was received very positively by critics. Josef Gasteiger, Laut , said the song “lacks a bit of punch, although the slight scratching in Mars 'voice is quite pleasing.” Bill Lamb from About gave the song a rating of 4.5 out of a possible 5 points and praised Mars' singing as well as the song's soulful, heart-touching lyrics, which "cemented his position as one of the best new artists of the year." Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly named Grenade as an "atmospheric opener" of Doo-Wops & Hooligans and one of the most Highlights of the album. Grenade has often been compared to Michael Jackson's Dirty Diana , a song that Mars' had covered at many concerts. However, Eric Henderson of Slant Magazine criticized Grenade for the unrealistic lyrics and Tim Sendra of Allmusic found Grenade "over the top" and one of the weaker songs on the album.

Music video

The music video for Grenade was released on November 19th. The video was directed by NABIL. In a behind-the-scenes video, Mars stated, “The concept of the video is my struggle to show this girl that I would really do anything for her. So I go so far as to pull a piano to her so that I can open my heart to her with a song. ”The video shows Mars' efforts to pull a piano on a rope to his beloved. On his way through Los Angeles he walks through the streets, in a car tunnel, and up the mountain to the house of his beloved. However, when he finds out that she is with another man, he pulls the piano with him in front of a train.
