Reviews

Knut Elstermann from MDR Kultur rated Gut gegen Nordwind with four out of five stars in his review and described the production as a “romantic, very well-played film that relies on great emotions, even if they do not arise from the direct encounter here - maybe they are that is precisely why it is all the bigger and more overwhelming ”. Nora Tschirner and Alexander Fehling made “astonishingly believable that a desirable image of the other can emerge from language, solely from a projection of longing.” In addition to the play, he particularly praised Jane Ainscough's “careful script”.

Nora Tschirner and her colleague Alexander Fehling received positive reviews for their portrayal.

“Thanks to clever staging and excellent play, a modern love story that is as touching as it is authentic”, judged Oliver Kube in his review for film releases . Tschirner and Fehling succeed in "despite the spatial separation to create an absolutely believable correlation of their characters that touches, empathizes and in some moments even makes the audience feel sorry for". With all the melancholy that the plot and its implementation radiate over long distances with calm camera work, a score determined by rather soft, playful sounds and mostly subdued light, Jopp manages to maintain a certain lightness that illustrates the positive feeling of being in love ". In addition to the two main actors, this is primarily due to screenwriter Jane Ainscough, but also to Andrew Bird's “skillful cuts”.

“Cinema romances usually follow the same disdainful patterns. The film adaptation of the novel Gut gegen Nordwind is a beneficial exception, ”said Christian Horn from the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung . Jopp can rely on her “brilliant love duo” and find “all sorts of creative ways to translate the e-mail novel into film. The many messages are either faded into the picture in a modern way or read from the off. In this way, and through a few symbolic images, a closeness is created between the characters, which is believable even without common scenes. And at the same time there is a twist that gives the plot new spice before the end is perfectly staged again. You get what you pay for and a little more ”.

"With strong actors, except for a short dry spell, a credible implementation succeeds", the Stern sums up . Above all, “the two main actors Fehling and Tschirner ensured credibility. Despite the spatial separation, their looks and facial expressions when reading and writing their messages make it clear that they are close. ”Especially at the beginning of the film,“ with the pointed, dry humor of the e-mails ”. The “first magic of the e-mail dialogue” however vanishes “in the middle of the film. Sometimes monotonous scenes follow in which Emmi and Leo hide behind their laptops and do not want to leave their digital island at all. A decision has to be made: Only at the end does the film pick up speed again when someone interferes in the e-mail traffic and a meeting of seemingly soulmates is imminent - one cannot expect greater tension in a romance via the web ".
