The list of grammar schools in East Prussia shows that the agrarian East Prussia had many grammar schools despite its very low population density. Around 1800 in East Prussia 66 institutions had the right to send graduates to the university, in 1913 only 13. The provincial capital Königsberg was the intellectual center of old Prussia.

Princely schools

In the Duchy of Prussia , the particular schools in Lyck , Tilsit and Saalfeld were raised to the status of a princely school by a decree of February 16, 1599 , to schola illustris apud Liccenses - Tilsit for Lithuania , Saalfeld for the German territory of the Order and Lyck for Masuria . At the same time they were placed under the supervision of the Philosophical Faculty of the Albertus University in Königsberg .
